Action Images / Reuters Black, Huber win doubles title; Huber joins Black at No.1 (See Pages 2, 4) UNESCO, Tour launch global programs, ad campaigns (See Page 7) MADRID, Spain - In an epic ending to an epic year, two of the greatest fighters in history went to war, battling for year-end glory at the Sony Ericsson Championships. And after a threehour, 24-minute marathon it was Justine Henin who was victorious, capping a record-breaking year with a 57 75 63 triumph and her 10th Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title of the season. Henin's title victory over Maria Sharapova - which, incidentally, placed at No.12 on the Open Era list of longest matches - was a nailbiter from start to finish. Henin barely let go of the opening set, saving seven set points before finally losing her 5-6 service game. The second set had a tense ending also, as she broke for 5-4 and then dropped serve, but would break again and tuck the set away with a love hold. The end of the second set was really important; I broke her, she broke me and I broke her again, so there was a lot of tension, Henin said. I think I took advantage of my opportunities more than her, especially on the returns. The third may not have been as long as the others in terms of games, but it too broke the hour mark. Just as Henin seemed to pull away - breaking and holding to lead 3-1 - Sharapova rallied to bring it back to 3-all. But that's when the wheels began coming off, as Sharapova dropped her serve at 15 and the top-ranked, top-seeded Henin held at love to go up 5-3. With Sharapova serving to stay in it Henin wasn't the least bit discouraged as four match points passed her by. She maintained the poise and composure she is so very famous for and refused to wait for her service game to close it out, sealing it on her fifth match point. This was one of the best moments of my career; to finish an amazing year with an amazing match, the longest I've ever played, makes me very happy, Henin said. I felt pretty fresh physically, but it was mentally and emotionally tough. And she played an amazing match - it's really great to see her at her best level again. For Sharapova, a run to the final here was a statement that she is still very much one of the grittiest and most dangerous competitors around. After a tough season that began with [Cont. Page 2]

Action Images / Reuters her reaching the Australian Open final and re-ascending to No.1 but saw her suffer a string of early round defeats - including falling in the fourth round of Wimbledon and surrendering her US Open title in the third round, and slipping to No.6 in the world coming into Madrid - this week has been nothing but a reaffirmation. After a match of nearly three and a half hours, it is always disappointing to be the loser; but at the end of the week there can only be one winner, and this time that was Justine," said Sharapova, who went 3-0 in her round robin group and routed Anna Chakvetadze in the semifinals before coming up against Henin. She really came through and played some good tennis in the end. But I'm definitely in a much better place than I was two weeks ago. Right now I'm not asking myself any more questions. For Henin, this season could barely have been any better. She won 63 of 67 matches (a.940 winning percentage, the likes of which haven't been seen since Graf put together a.977 season in 1989) and 10 of the 14 tournaments she played, including her sixth and seventh major titles at Roland Garros and the US Open (not since Hingis in 1997 has a player won double digit titles in a season). And with the exception of seven weeks early on, she held the No.1 ranking the entire season. Perhaps most impressively is that Henin blows away the previous record for the highest prize money earnings in a single year - the $1-million winner's cheque pushes her well past Clijsters' $4,466,345 total from 2003, to $5,367,086. She is the first woman to earn over $5 million in a single season. And so Henin, the smallest player in the Top 20, finishes at No.1 for a second straight year, showing once again that through setback and disadvantage can come drive and determination. Impossible is nothing and I've proven it again this year, she continued. When I remember the way I felt in January and when I came back to competition in February in Paris, it was like I had to start again. I had to deal with a lot of emotions. It's been a very difficult year but I remained very positive and I grew up a lot. A lot of things happened in my life that fueled my tennis more than ever. I have no hesitations to say that it's been the best season in my career so far, even if it has been one of the most difficult. Black, Huber cap phenomenal doubles season Neither one of their two matches at the Sony Ericsson Championships was by any means easy, but given their form coming in, it wouldn t have been too smart to bet against them. Coming off a regular season that saw them capture eight titles - including Grand Slams at the Australian Open in January and at Wimbledon in July - Cara Black and Liezel Huber were the favorites at the seasonending Championships, and they sure came through, picking off Kveta Peschke and Rennae Stubbs in the semifinals, 76(3) 46 106, and Katarina Srebotnik and Ai Sugiyama in the final, 57 63 108. We ve been the dictating team this year and it was great to show it at the end; not just talking the talk, Huber commented. We ve had great matches the whole year against Sugi and Katarina and today was really tight, Black added. You just have to focus on your own game; that s what we ve done well all year. Black and Huber had won three titles together prior to this year, including their first of now three Slams at Wimbledon in 2005, but their prior success was more than eclipsed this year as they added to the aforementioned majors and Madrid triumph with titles at Paris [Indoors], Antwerp, Dubai, San Diego, Moscow and Linz. For Black the title was an individual triumph; she had qualified here seven times before with different partners and had never won the title in five previous finals, including in all of the last three years. After losing five finals, it s a real confidence booster to win and nice to take away at the end of the year, the Zimbabwean said. Srebotnik and Sugiyama, the No.2 seeds behind Black and Huber, beat Chan Yung-Jan and Chuang Chia-Jung in their semi. Black and Huber were by far the doubles team of 2007, capturing a total of nine titles, including two Grand Slams and this past week s season-ending honors. QUOTES OF THE WEEK We had a disappointing US Open. We played too many matches, something we didn't anticipate at the beginning of the year. You learn a lot from your victories and from your defeats too. Now we know what kind of preparation we need for the Slams next year. Liezel Huber on she and Cara Black s second round loss at the US Open, their only pre-semifinal loss in 23 tournaments this season. It s a different life than other girls my age who are in school and college, but it s one I could never trade, even with these challenges I have or those I ll get in the coming years. I have to accept them and move on. It s never going to come the easy way but I respect that and I love the challenges of it. Maria Sharapova on how her struggles with injury this year haven t deterred her from giving her tennis career her all. Once when I played in Stanford it got stuck on the racquet but that was just once. I think I ll cut it a little bit after Madrid because I cut it every year but before the last tournament I didn t want to cut it - it s a little superstition. But just a little bit, I don t want short hair because I m used to having long hair since I was 8 or 9. It used to be even longer. (6) Maria Sharapova (RUS #6) 57 75 63 Final, Sony Ericsson Championships (Madrid) Coming into the Sony Ericsson Championships their results couldn t have been more different, but in the final of the season-ender there was very little between them, as Justine Henin edged Maria Sharapova in three marathon sets - each of which lasted more than an hour - for a three-hour, 24-minute triumph in the Spanish capital. It was the 12th-longest women s singles match in the Open Era, and the longest best-of-three-set final in season-ending Championships history. The 2006 season-ending champion s victory over the 2004 season-ending champion also extended her win streak to 25 matches in a row, a personal best as well as a Tourbest (the last time a player won that many matches in a row came over seven years ago, when Venus Williams hit 35 in 2000). HONORABLE MENTION (1) Justine Henin (BEL #1) d. (A) Marion Bartoli (FRA #10) 60 60 (Madrid Round Robin): For the fourth time in her career (and the third time on the Tour), Henin double-bageled an opponent, which may have been revenge for her shock Wimbledon semifinal loss. I had a lot of determination, Henin said of the 57-minute rout. The first game was pretty difficult, but then I really played unbelievable tennis and everything was working really well. Maybe it s a little bit of revenge for losing to her in the Wimbledon semifinals. Henin chases Davenport; Huber joins Black at No.1 Justine Henin first ascended to No.1 on October 20, 2003; she became the first to lose it a week later but returned to No.1 on November 10, 2003, holding it 44 weeks until September 12, 2004, after the US Open. She re-ascended on November 13, 2006, holding it for 11 weeks to bring her non-consecutive total to 56. She began her fourth stint at No.1 on March 19, 2007, at Miami, and this week begins her 35th straight week (91st overall) at the top. If all goes to plan, she will spend her 98th week at No.1 in the first week of the season (tying Davenport on the all-time list). Cara Black spent her first 16 weeks at No.1 in doubles between October 17, 2005 and February 5, 2006. She spent two more weeks there between June 11 and 24 this year and began her third stint there on July 9, 2007. This week she earns her 19th straight (37th total) week at No.1, but is now joined by Liezel Huber, who will become the 22nd player in history to rise to No.1 in doubles. NEWS BRIEFS UNESCO, Tour launch exciting new global programs and advertising campaign MADRID, Spain - UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, the world's leading global sport for women, announced last Wednesday in Madrid the selection and funding of women's leadership programs in Cameroon, Liberia, China, Jordan and the Dominican Republic, along with a new global advertising campaign designed to raise awareness and promote the goal of gender equality. Since the launch 12 months ago of the landmark global partnership between UNESCO and the Tour to further gender equality and promote women's leadership in all spheres of society, a substantial amount of funds has been raised or pledged and global Promoter of Gender Equality Venus Williams has been joined by fellow players Tatiana Golovin of France and Zheng Jie of China. The new programs, supported both through financial contributions and the partnership's Promoters of Gender Equality, are designed to create chances for women and girls to assume leadership roles and raise awareness and promote gender equality. In Liberia, the project will create a women-only night school program for 1000 girls and train female teachers to staff the program in an effort to further equal access to quality primary and secondary education for disadvantaged women in post-conflict Liberia. In Cameroon, the project will work to create a group of successful female politicians, business women and athletes who will organize various events and activities in support of women's leadership and gender equality. In China, the project will aim to raise the percentage of rural women involved in local affairs and promote a more balanced decision making process. In the Dominican Republic, the program will advocate for women's social and political leadership through awareness raising activities and capacity building and training programs (one of these programs will train 80 young women between the ages of 18 and 28 in participative leadership skills to encourage them to rise to top positions in civil society and political organizations). And in Jordan, a legal rights awareness program, consisting of 24 legal training workshops throughout the country, will be designed to empower women to know their rights. The global advertising campaign, which features Williams and Golovin in television spots as well as a print advertisement, is expected to be run by a number of international and national broadcasters, including Eurosport, Zee Sports in India, NTV in Russia and the Tennis Channel in the USA. The advertisements are designed to raise awareness and promote the goal of gender equality and women's leadership. They are also designed to introduce the Tour's rising star players as global role models for women's leadership in their role as Promoters of Gender Equality. In addition, Williams' new EleVen clothing line and her retail partner Steve & Barry's announced today that they've created a special Venus Williams/UNESCO T-shirt that will be sold at Steve & Barry's retail outlets, online at the Tour's official website and at select Tour tournaments with the net proceeds from sales to be donated to the UNESCO-Sony Ericsson WTA Tour partnership. At Wednesday's announcement held in the new City Hall of Madrid, Williams was flanked by Alberto Ruiz Gallardon, the Mayor of Madrid; Tour Chairman & CEO Larry Scott; Hans d'orville, Assistant Director-General for Strategic Planning of UNESCO; Tour President Stacey Allaster; Saniye Gülser Corat, Chief of the Section for Women and Gender Equality of the Bureau of Strategic Planning of UNESCO; and Gerard Tsobanian, Managing Director of Action Images Madrid Trophy Promotions, the promoters of the Sony Ericsson Championships, promoter of the combined women/men equal prize money major event to be staged in Madrid starting in 2009. The award, now into its third year, honors the player who scored the point that best demonstrated the most 6TH Sense intuition. It was presented to Justine by Dino Olivetti, Director, Brand Marketing, Whirlpool Europe. Justine was one of the 10 top players short-listed for the award via an online competition organized by Whirlpool, Premier Sponsor of the Tour. The competition ran from September 3rd to October 15th with people visiting www.eurosport.com and www.whirlpool.eu to view shots selected. Thousands of people in Europe voted, with 34% choosing Justine's as the point that best reflected 6TH Sense intuition - sharp intelligence, unbeatable performance and pinpoint precision. Upon getting the award for the second time, having won it in 2005, Justine said: It's great to win the award again. Having been voted by people across all the whole of Europe makes it very special, even more so when you look at the other players and shots. I love the idea that individual shots are rewarded and remembered. 6th Sense, intuition and precision are very important for all of us as we are playing against great sportswomen every week and this was an inspiration when I recently launched my 6th Sense Tennis Academy, allowing me to share what I have learnt over the years. Jankovic receives 2007 ACES Award MADRID, Spain - Jelena Jankovic claimed the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour ACES Award by virtue of an impressive lead at the top of the season-long ACES Race which began at Sydney and culminated following Linz just over a week ago. The Tour ACES Award is given to the player who consistently goes above and beyond to promote women's tennis in the media, the community and beyond. I am honored and delighted to receive this award, Jankovic said. Tennis has been the joy of my life and I am very happy to be able to give back to the sport and help it grow. I am looking forward to participating in the ACES program again next year and hope to be able to make a larger difference on and off the court. Jelena has been one of the Tour's breakout stars in 2007, said Tour CEO Larry Scott. She has participated in many activities this year away from the courts. Whether it was media interviews, fan-friendly endeavors, sponsor functions or pro-am clinics, she has given of herself selflessly, been a true ambassador in promoting our sport and deserves that recognition amongst her peers.
