Guidelines for Mathematical Science Courses School of Business, Education and Social Sciences STAT 269 is an introductory statistics course, with a prerequisite of two years of high school algebra. The introductory CIS courses to consider include: CIS 171 Problem Solving with Computers focuses on using computers and software to create reports, images, spreadsheets, web pages, and databases. CIS 180 Introduction to Computer and Information Science covers both technical and social aspects of computing, including privacy, security, reliability, and ethics. CIS 181 Computer Programming I in Python is the introductory programming course for both majors and non-majors. Social Work Majors: All students in these majors must take STAT 269, which is usually taken in the second year. This is a prerequisite for SOWK 385 Research. We highly recommend students who have a weak background in algebra not take a Math course during their first semester. First Semester Blueprint 2 Messiah College
