1 INTRODUCTION This document details the installation and administration of the NBC Learn External Tool for Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). Canvas Administrators should refer to this guide to facilitate the configuration and management of the NBC Learn External Tool to ensure proper installation and functionality. 1.1 Product Overview NBC Learn offers unique collections of video resources, primary source documents, historic footage, images and mini-documentaries designed for use in the classroom. The NBC Learn External Tool enables subscriber institutions to enhance classroom learning by adding NBC Learn resources in their Canvas courses. The NBC Learn External Tool seamlessly integrates with your current Canvas installation and enables instructors to embed NBC Learn content into existing courses for course delivery. For students, NBC Learn is a valuable research tool and unique study aid. 1.2 Prerequisites In order to get started in NBC Learn, you will need: A signed End User License Agreement (EULA) between your institution and NBC Learn. Your NBC Learn Consumer Key/Shared Secret provided by NBC Learn. External tool configuration script https://static.nbclearn.com/canvas/nbclearn_config_live.xml An operational test or production Canvas system. Technical knowledge of Canvas environment settings, and External Tool installation. To install the NBC Learn External Tool you will need to be the Canvas system administrator or a Couse Curriculum designer with privileges for External Tools Configuration. 1.3 Customer Support Technical Support is available from the following: Via the web at http://contactus.nbclearn.com Direct by Phone: (877) NBC-7502 (please have your consumer key / Subscription Token available)
1.4 There Different User Modes The NBC Learn External Tool is an annual subscription service. However, the External Tool is architected to have three modes: Guest, Trial, and Subscription. By default, the External Tool is in Guest mode which means you will only be able to watch the first 15 seconds of video content. You can still browse, search and embed. By requesting a security token, you can use the External Tool in trial mode. Upon completing the security token form, you will receive an activation email with additional instructions. Using the security token provided in the activation email, this will unlock the videos to play in their full duration for a period of 30 days. After the trial expires, the videos will revert back to playing for the first 15 seconds. At that time, the trial can be extended OR upgraded to a paid Subscription mode. The security token (consumer Key) is what dictates the mode you are in. Other than the first 15 seconds of video, the guest, trial, and subscription version of the External Tool will look and feel the same. (Note: the subscription mode also allows download capability for offline playback). 2 INSTALLATION NBC Learn can be installed /Configured as a LTI External Tool in Canvas. 2.1 External Tool Installation: By URL 1. Log into Canvas. 2. Click ok the Courses tab at the top and Click on the Account under Manage Account section. 3. Click on the Settings link on the left hand side Navigation.
4. Click External Tools tab. 5. Click on Add New Tool button. 6. Enter the Consumer Key, Shared Secret and the configuration URL provided in your account Activation email by NBC Learn.
NOTE: Consumer key is often termed as subscription token in NBC Learn account activation email. 7. Click on submit. 8. Refresh the page and you will see Browse NBC Learn link in the left hand side menu.
2.2 External Tool Installation: Manual XML Entry 1. Log into Canvas. 2. Follow step 2-6 from section 2.1 External Tool Installation: By URL. 3. Download the NBC Learn configuration and copy the entire XML to a text editor. 4. Enter the Consumer Key, Shared Secret and the configuration URL provided in your account Activation email by NBC Learn.
NOTE: Consumer key is often termed as subscription token in NBC Learn Account Activation email. 5. Click on submit. 6. Refresh the page and you will see Browse NBC Learn link in the left hand side menu.
3 Installation Verification Once you have configured/installed NBC Learn External tool follow steps below to validate if the installation was successful. 1. Open a test course and check if Browse NBC Learn link is available in the left hand side menu.
2. Click on Browse NBC Learn link and it will open NBC Learn Site within Campus : 3. Click any of the collections on the left hand side and try to play a video: 4. If you see video playing full length then it indicates that your subscription is configured correctly and successfully activated. 5. To verify if the NBC Learn tool is configured in the HTML Editor successfully, click on the pages link from the left hand side menu.
6. You should see NBC icon in the HTML Editor Toolbar.
