In the layer located above, the application server, objects and their logical relationships are created, and in the Engineering Base Explorer they are finally offered with the familiar appearance and handling as structured tree, table or editing mask. For graphics editing Microsoft Office Visio, tried and tested millions of times, is employed. VBA, another well-known Office product, is the programming language for customer-specific solutions. Data Model The entire data model including all of the rules is stored in the database and controls the behavior of Engineering Base. Customer- or branch-specific attributes can be supplemented anytime and e.g. linked to certain device types. Any number of graphic representations can be defined for each object, either for different documents or different standards. This openness means a long life time independent of the technical development in the customer segments. Automatic Processes Even automatic processes dealing with wiring, device designations or signal names are not part of the kernel system but are realized as event-driven server add-ins. Thus they can be expanded, renewed or supplemented anytime independent of the main versions.
