SERVICE OPENNESS- OPEN HORIZONTAL PLATFORM (AC4) Session report Franck Le Gall icore Empowering IoT through Cognitive Technologies o

Session objectives Need to provide horizontal solutions able to cope with the requirements of many verticals sectors becoming more and more pressing to provide the users with the Smart Life experience. This implies the ability to deploy interoperable technologies, interconnecting heterogeneous stakeholders while providing reliable solutions to the end-users. Technologies mostly exist but now need to be made openly available to provide interconnected trials and unlock the innovation potential of IoT. The session identified existing initiatives in the field of open-platforms 2

Agenda 9:30-9:45 AC 4 Opening - Philippe Cousin (PROBE-IT / EGM) 9:45 10:15: Opportunities for Open horizontal platforms Massimo Valla (Telecom Italia / BUTLER) 10:15 12:00: presentations of building blocks (GE, interfaces, etc...) published by existing initiatives and candidates as components of an open horizontal platform (15 to 20 min per presentation) FIWARE (Thierry Nagellen Orange Labs) : FIWARE openness and what is the challenge of Open Innovation Lab (OIL) icore (Vera Stavroulaki Piraeus University) OpenIOT/GAMBAS (Martin Serrano - DERI) Libelium (Alicia Asín Pérez - Libelium) : Waspmote as horizontal platform and the Cooking Hacks approach ComVantage (Oscar Lazaro - Comvantage): Enablers for Future Internet Information Interoperability Open Source Internet of Things - Michael Koster 3

Round table 12:00 12:30 Round-table: challenges for Open horizontal platform, plan for practical set-up through joint trials (Moderator Franck Le Gall, BUTLER) Participants: Speakers + Srdjan Krco (IoT Forum) Discussion on topics related to: set-up, maintenance and qualification, SLA, liability, sustainability, etc. 4

BUTLER Open architecture, open specifications Re-use of existing components as much as possible FIWARE Part of the huge FI-PPP program. Sustainebd by the Open Innovation Lab initiative Not an open source platform but open specifications and accessible platform ( Will provide real city data Could benefit from BUTLER smartmobile Open source instantiation planned in next stage 5

icore Targets re-use of published components and APIs by 3rd parties Objects management, semantic based composition, learning mechanisms, queries management, natural alnguage processing Open IOT/Gambas IoT Applications = Sensor Data + Applications Plumbing is here, need to look at the semantic Release open-source components of an IoT-A inspired concrete architecture Open linked sensor middleware, Superstreamcollider: acquisition, transformation, queries, processing, viszualisation... of data 6

Libelium Hardware provider, based on open APIs: open hardware Extensive use case coverage: modular philosophy Community building: Cooking hacks initiative (DIY) Comvantage BPM based approach for semantic interoperability in enterprise solutions Agile and interorganizational workflows on application layer Generic Apps based workflow orchestration and execution for automated App deployment 7

Questions What is an open horizontal platform? A directory of: Open software? Open hardware? Open specifications? A community? A running platform? Do we need one? Many initiatives around: M2M, FIWARE, etc What should be the first step? A directory? Joint demos? Sustainability Need for maintenance and quality assessment of directory and components Need for interoperability testing and management Need for users support Need to create trust 8

What is an open horizontal platform Not one platform but probably many 9

Do we need one? a lot of research in the direction of IoT architecture, platform, also a lot of work on standardization, it would be important not necessarily to have 1 platform, but find a way to really collaborate so that the results of the different UE project are sustainable and can continue after project. IoT platform should include/be the Best Practices : IoT Cookbook! IPv6 was created because of IoT but only a few object actually use IPv6, what is missing currently is the infrastructure, it cost a lot of money to invest in infrastructure 2/3M to deploy only a few sensors in a city, the platform shall support applications, today standards change to fast, only a few sensor are used on the 15 in a smart phone... platform is only an enabler, we need application It's time to demonstrate. Create a joint directory, matrix showing we use this, this this... in this case study (hu sounds like a social network of applications?). 10

What should be the first step? building knowledge base is the first step necessary to build a common platform, this has been done by the projects 11

How to ensure sustainability? work done has to be kept and sustained (ex IoT ref. architecture), this can be a role of the IoT Forum IoT Forum as a coordinator between projects? Sustainability of open source : not just release component in open source but to sustain them with a rich community, need for commitment of industrial partner to keep the efforts going Easy to adapt, plug-in, sustainable. 12
