Charlie Crist Governor Monesia T. Brown Director EMBARGOED UNTIL 10:00 AM CONTACT: WARREN MAY THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 2007 (850) 245-7130 FLORIDA S JANUARY UNEMPLOYMENT RATE 3.3 PERCENT ~The unemployment rate continues to outperform the national average~ TALLAHASSEE Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation (AWI) Director Monesia T. Brown today announced Florida s unemployment rate for January 2007 - seasonally adjusted - was 3.3 percent, unchanged from the December 2006 rate. Based on the latest nationwide data, Florida had the lowest unemployment rate of the ten most populous states and continues below the national average. The comparable national unemployment rate for January was 4.6 percent. Florida s economy continues to see growth, said AWI Director Monesia Brown. Although the housing sector continues to exert pressure on our job market as it does elsewhere, Florida s economy is producing a steady supply of jobs. As we move forward, it is essential that we continue to identify, develop and participate in programs that create job equity for industries of critical need throughout the state. AWI and Florida s workforce system are focusing on high wage jobs by creating up-to-date training for workers in industries that are critical to sustaining and growing Florida s diverse economy. AWI continues to participate in programs that foster economic growth like the Employ Florida Banner Centers, CHOICE Institutes and Florida ReBuilds. In the next two months four new Banner Centers will be created that design training curricula in health sciences, homeland security, logistics & distribution and construction. Florida s Labor Force at a Glance Florida has enjoyed 53 consecutive months of job growth. Florida gained 145,200 nonagricultural new jobs in January compared to a year ago. Out of the civilian labor force of 9,136,000, there were 305,000 unemployed Floridians. Florida s January 2007 unemployment rate was 1.3 percentage points lower than the national rate of 4.6 percent. Florida s rate has been below the national average since mid-2002. FLORIDA S NONAGRICULTURAL EMPLOYMENT BY INDUSTRY (Seasonally Adjusted) In January 2007, Florida s nonagricultural employment expanded by 1.8 percent over the year, totaling 8,075,200 jobs. In comparison, nonagricultural employment grew nationally at a rate of 1.6 percent. Florida s job growth rate has slowed recently due primarily to weaker growth in construction. Florida added 145,200 jobs since January 2006. Professional and business services and education and health services accounted for 47 percent of the new jobs in the state. FLORIDA S NONAGRICULTURAL EMPLOYMENT BY INDUSTRY (Not Seasonally Adjusted) Florida s total nonagricultural employment has expanded steadily since September 2002. In January 2007, there were 8,039,100 nonagricultural jobs, an increase of 1.9 percent (+151,500 jobs) over the year. Most of Florida s major industry sectors, which are described below, added jobs over the year except information which lost 800 jobs and manufacturing which lost 6,000 jobs. Professional and business services led Florida s industry sectors in employment growth over the year, adding 42,000 jobs (+3.2 percent). Employment services (+16,000 jobs, +3.7 percent) continued to lead job growth within this industry sector. The education and health services sector ranked second and grew by 27,900 jobs (+2.9 percent) over the year. Health care and social assistance added the most jobs (+24,900 jobs, +3.0 percent) in this industry sector. The strongest growth within health care and social assistance was in ambulatory health care services (+11,400 jobs, +3.4 percent). Government ranked third in adding the most jobs in the state (18,600 jobs, +1.7 percent) with the increases primarily in local government (+16,600 jobs, +2.2 percent). The trade, transportation, and utilities industry ranked fourth in adding the most jobs in the state. The industry continued to exhibit growth over the year (+16,700 jobs, +1.1 percent), with more than half of the job gains in retail trade (+9,100 jobs, +0.9 percent). Motor vehicle and parts dealers (+2,500 jobs, +1.9 percent) added the most jobs in this industry. Construction (+13,600 jobs, +2.2 percent) continued to slow after reaching a peak rate of 14.3 percent in September 2005. Despite the slower growth, construction remained slightly faster than the overall job growth rate. Specialty trade contractors (+11,600 jobs) lead construction in job growth, while heavy and civil engineering construction had the fastest growth rate (+6.6 percent). Construction of buildings lost 2,900 jobs (-2.2 percent). Information (-800 jobs, -0.5 percent) and manufacturing (-6,000 jobs, -1.5 percent) were the only major industries that declined over the year. Most of information s job loss was in telecommunications (-1,000 jobs, -1.6 percent). Declines in durable goods manufacturing (- 1,500 jobs, -0.5 percent) accompanied losses in the nondurable goods sector (-4,500 jobs, - 3.5 percent). LOCAL AREA UNEMPLOYMENT STATISTICS (Not Seasonally Adjusted) In January 2007, Liberty and Walton counties shared the state s lowest unemployment rate (2.4 percent), followed by Monroe County (2.5 percent) and Wakulla County (2.6 percent). Alachua, Okaloosa, and Union counties were the next lowest (2.7 percent). Madison County, at 7.2 percent, had the highest unemployment rate in Florida in January, followed by Flagler and Hendry counties (5.0 percent) and Hernando County (4.9 percent). 2
Madison County s relatively high unemployment rate was due to the continuing effects of a manufacturing layoff. The counties having the largest over-the-year increases in their unemployment rates were Madison (+3.0 percentage points); Flagler (+1.0 percentage point); and Jackson (+0.9 percentage point). Forty-eight counties increased, thirteen decreased, and six were unchanged. AREA NONAGRICULTURAL EMPLOYMENT BY INDUSTRY (Not Seasonally Adjusted) The Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) led the state in over-the-year employment gains (+40,300 jobs, +1.7 percent) in January 2007, followed by the Orlando-Kissimmee MSA (+29,900 jobs, +2.8 percent) and the Tampa-St. Petersburg- Clearwater MSA (+26,500 jobs, +2.1 percent). The combined employment growth in these three MSAs accounted for 64 percent of the total job growth in the state. Annual Revisions to Estimates Beginning with this release of January 2007 estimates, the names of two Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) in Florida have changed. The MSAs with new names are Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach and Port St. Lucie; the geography of these areas did not change. Labor force and unemployment estimates for the State of Florida and the Miami-Miami- Beach-Kendall Metropolitan Division have been revised back to January 2002. For the other substate areas, estimates for 2006 have been revised and revisions back to 2002 are still in progress. Nonagricultural employment for 2005 and 2006 for the state, all MSAs, and all Metropolitan Divisions have been revised. For selected areas and industries, nonagricultural employment estimates have been revised back to January 1990. These data series have been revised to reflect company breakouts of some Professional Employer Organizations (PEOs) resulting in a more complete picture of the actual location and industry of jobs. The reallocation of employment resulted in a reduction of professional and business services industry employment and increased employment in other industries. All of these revisions are routine and take place at this same time every year. The revisions reflect more complete information from employers on the number of jobs and are a normal part of the nationwide annual estimating cycle as determined by the US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. 3
