California Winter League Standings The California Winter League was integrated during the 1910-11 season when Rube Foster brought the Leland Giants to the West Coast to play the winter league season. The following California Winter League standings were compiled by William McNeil for his book The California Winter League (McFarland Publishing). In his book, McNeil indicates that newspaper coverage was not always very good and that numerous game accounts are missing for each season, therefore, it is important to note that most of the season standings are most likely not complete. An asterisk by a team s name indicates it was a black team. California Winter League (1910-11) McCormicks 12 5 1.706 San Diego 7 4 0.636 * Lincoln Giants 10 7 2.588 Doyles 2 14 1.125 California Winter League (1911-12) The presence of Rube Foster s Lincoln Giants team in the California Winter League during the 1910-11 season raised the quality of play in the league, attracted a higher caliber of ball player (Major and Minor League players) to the white teams, increased the fan base and significantly increased attendance at the league games. When no black team joined the league for the 1911-12 season, the California Winter League reverted back to a semi-professional league for the season. Teams that played in the California Winter League for the 1911-12 season were: Fillmore, Harris & Frank, Henry & Cornett, Jeffries, Oxnard, Pomona, San Bernadino and Ventura. It is important to note that in addition to the California Winter League there were several other leagues that played baseball in California during the winter of 1911-12. One of the most important leagues from a black baseball historical perspective was in the Los Angeles area. This league included the Los Angeles Colored Giants (semi-pro black team from Los Angeles), McCormick Shamrocks, Maier Joy Riders and the Santa Monica Beach Combers. 1

California Winter League (1912-13) San Diego Bears 7 4 0.636 Tufts-Lyons 6 6 0.500 * Chicago American Giants 6 7 0.462 McCormicks 2 4 0.333 California Winter League (1913-14) Newspaper coverage of the 1913-14 California Winter League is very sketchy according to the research of William McNeil. Too few games with box scores were found to construct a league standing. The Los Angeles Colored Giants did play in the league during the winter of 1913-14. In addition the following white teams also played in the league: Boynton Beavers, Long Beach, Los Angeles Brewery, Los Angeles Hoegees, Newton All Stars, Oxnard, Perris, Phoenix, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, Stockton, Tufts-Lyons, Urbita Stars (San Bernadino) and Whittier. There is also a possibility that the Chicago American Giants may have played in the league or against league teams because according to Negro League researcher Lyle Wilson the American Giants barnstormed on the West Coast in the winter of 1913-14. California Winter League (1914-15) There does not appear to have been a formalized California Winter League during the 1914-15 season. There were some lesser leagues like the Imperial Valley League and the Southern California Winter League. Most of the baseball games played during the winter seem to have been played on an independent basis. There was no high caliber black team that competed in California during the 1914-15 winter league season. 2

California Winter League (1915-16) *Chicago American Giants 9 5 0.643 San Bernadino 4 3 0.571 San Diego Pantages 5 8 0.385 Cline-Cline 2 4 0.333 California Winter League (1916-17) Not enough games have been found to construct league standings for the 1916-17 California Winter League season. The Los Angeles White Sox were the black entry in the league. The White Sox team included John Donaldson and George Tank Carr. The white teams that played in the California Winter League during the 1916-17 season included: Anheuser-Busch, Pacific Electric, Pasadena, Santa Barbara, San Diego Hulls and San Pedro. California Winter League (1917-18) Not enough games have been found to construct league standings for the 1917-18 California Winter League season. The Los Angeles White Sox were the black entry in the league. John Donaldson returned to play for the White Sox for the 1917-18 season. The white teams that played in the California Winter League during the 1916-17 season included: Army, Camp Kearny, Fullerton-Anaheim, Los Angeles, Navy, Pacific Electric, Pasadena, Rathskellers, San Pedro, Standard-Murphy, Submarine Base, Tufts-Lyons and Vernon. California Winter League (1918-19) There was no black team represented in the California Winter League for the 1918-19 season. The white teams that played in the league were the Athletics, Dyas All Stars, Hollywood, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Rall s All Stars and the Vernon Tigers. 3

California Winter League (1919-20) There was no black team represented in the California Winter League for the 1919-20 season. The white teams that played in the league were Dyas All Stars, Killefer s All Stars, Babe Ruth s All Stars and Buck Weaver s All Stars. The Los Angeles White Sox appear to have the top rated black team in the Southern California area, but they were strictly a semi-professional club. California Winter League (1920-21) The stature of the California Winter League changed in 1920 when Joe Pirrone (local ball player and night club owner) joined forces with Doc Anderson (local businessman) to elevate the status of the league. Anderson was responsible for including at least one black team in the league and securing a home ball park for the team. The importance of a home park for black teams stemmed from the fact that black teams were barred from playing in Pacific Coast League stadiums. Anderson secured a ball park for black teams by building his own stadium (Anderson Park a.k.a. White Sox Park) at the corner of East Anderson and 4 th Street in Los Angeles. Pirrone s responsibility was recruiting Major League and high caliber Minor League players for the white teams in the league. The 1920-21 California Winter League season is considered by many baseball historians as the first real California Winter League season. The Los Angeles White Sox were the black team entry in the 1920-21 California Winter League. Some of the Negro League stars that were signed by the White Sox for the 1920-21 season were George Tank Carr, Rube Currie, Bob Fagan, Hurley McNair, Walter Dobie Moore and Bullet Joe Rogan. They were the Lincoln Giants (Eastern Colored League) and Alexander s Giants. The Lincoln Giants were led by Biz Mackey (.494), Bill Pettus (.403) and Spottswood Poles (.365). Jess Hubbard (9-1) and Ping Gardner (8-1) were the Lincoln Giants two top pitchers during the winter. The Lincoln Giants compiled an impressive record of 20-2 (.909) while playing in California. Alexander s Giants played an extensive schedule that included at least 82 games on the West Coast. 4
