Section Four: Dental Hygiene Program Agreements 4-1 DENTAL HYGIENE PLAN A JOINT ADMISSIONS AGREEMENT BETWEEN UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF RHODE ISLAND The joint agreement held between URI and CCRI with respect to Dental Hygiene is suspended as of fall 2002. Therefore, no additional students will be accepted into the joint admissions program. I. JOINT ADMISSION PROCESS AND CONDITIONS The Joint Admissions Program shall begin September 1998 and is available to incoming University of Rhode Island freshmen enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program. Up to six (6) students may be accepted into this program each year; that number may be changed by the mutual agreement of the directors of the Dental Hygiene Programs at CCRI and URI. A. In order to participate in this program students must apply to the Joint Admissions Dental Hygiene Program with the intent to continue on to the Dental Hygiene Program at Community College of Rhode Island as a sophomore, or as a junior. Upon receipt, the applications will be reviewed by the Office of Admissions at University of Rhode Island. B. Upon acceptance admission officers at University of Rhode Island and Community College of Rhode Island shall jointly send an offer of admission to students. That acceptance will explain the requirements for continuation to Community College of Rhode Island following completion of the required freshman year courses at University of Rhode Island. C. To be guaranteed admission to Dental Hygiene Program at Community College of Rhode Island, under the Joint Admission Program, students must (1) enroll in the Joint Admission Program as a freshman at University of Rhode Island as described above, (2) meet the academic admission requirements to the dental hygiene program at Community College of Rhode Island, (3) have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0, and (4) meet all non-academic admission requirements for the Dental Hygiene Program at Community College of Rhode Island, including satisfactory completion of the coursework mutually specified by the CCRI and URI Dental Hygiene Programs.

Courses taken by students at University of Rhode Island shall satisfy course requirements in accordance with the Transfer Guide for Students published by the Office of Higher Education. Transfer credit for any Community College of Rhode Island course not listed in the Transfer Guide shall be granted at the discretion of the Dean or designee at University of Rhode Island. E. The Community College of Rhode Island catalog which is in effect the year a freshman matriculates at University of Rhode Island shall govern the terms of admission and the associate degree requirement at Community College of Rhode Island, unless the student interrupts his or her enrollment at Community College of Rhode Island after transferring from University of Rhode Island. In the event that a student interrupts his or her enrollment at Community College of Rhode Island after transfer from University of Rhode Island, the associate degree requirements for a degree will be governed by the catalog in place in the year of re-entry. F. Upon successful completion of an Associate of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene from Community College of Rhode Island, the student will return to the University of Rhode Island to complete the Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene. G. Students in the Joint Admissions Program shall be governed by the regulations, requirements and procedures of the University of Rhode Island until they are granted a baccalaureate. While at Community College of Rhode Island they will be governed by the regulations, requirements and procedures at Community College of Rhode Island until such time as they are granted the associate degree. Section Four: Dental Hygiene Program Agreements 4-3 DENTAL HYGIENE PLAN B ARTICULATION AGREEMENT BETWEEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF RHODE ISLAND AND UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND September, 1989 Revised January, 1998 Admission to the URI Dental Hygiene Plan B program has been suspended by the University of Rhode Island as of fall 2002. Therefore, no additional students will be accepted into the program. Baccalaureate Completion Program: Below is a list of URI courses to be taken by CCRI graduates who wish to earn a bachelor s degree in dental hygiene. The list is based on the Transfer/Articulation Agreement between CCRI and URI and an examination of the dental hygiene programs at the two institutions. The list assumes that the student has: 1. Earned an associate s degree in dental hygiene from CCRI. 2. Successfully completed the board examinations in dental hygiene. 3. Applied to and been accepted by the URI Admissions Office for a bachelor s degree in dental hygiene. The courses listed below must be taken at URI: REQUIRED COURSES CREDITS Fine Arts and Literature general education courses 6 Letters general education courses 6 Foreign language/culture general education courses 6 Math general education course 3 CHM 124, 126 Organic Chemistry and Lab 4 DHY 350 Dental Health Education 3 DHY 462 Oral Care of the Aged and Medically Compromised 3 DHY 464 Field Experience in Community Oral Health 3 *EDC 102 Introduction to American Education 3 REQUIRED COURSES CREDITS EDC 312 Psychology of Learning 3 *EDC 371 Educational Measurements 3 *HLT 172 First Aid 1 PSY 232 Developmental Psychology 3 *SOC 204 Social Psychology 3 *WRT 201 Intermediate Writing 3 Electives 10 TOTAL 63 Note: In order to earn a bachelor s degree from URI, a student must have taken half of the credits from a baccalaureate institution. In this case, 63 credits must be earned from a baccalaureate institution, since at least 125 credits are necessary to earn the B.S. in Dental Hygiene. *Courses that may be waived in order to pursue a minor (18 credits in designated discipline). Permission is required from the Director of Dental Hygiene and from the Chair of the department of the student s minor field of study.
