Portfolio Brief Nortel Networks Preside Solutions for IP Networks and Services Dial Access Management Overcome outsourcing challenges, capture the richness of call details and manage multiple RAS-enabled services with Preside service-enabling solutions. Increasing deregulation in the telecommunications industry has created an extremely competitive environment for service providers. In order to be profitable, service providers are being challenged to increase time-to-revenue through improved service delivery, evolve and grow their business quickly and easily, as well as differentiate themselves by providing rapid mass customization of new and improved service offerings. Nortel Networks, a leader in deploying global telecommunications solutions, offers secure, end-to-end network, service and policy management. Nortel Networks Preside is a proven solution for carriers and service providers. It features an open, standardsbased architecture that allows thirdparty software applications to be easily and cost-effectively developed to meet the unique needs of individual service providers. The values of simplicity, openness, flexibility, and scalability that Preside has long provided for optical networks has now been broadened to switching, access, and data networks. Nortel Networks has extended its network, service and policy

Key Benefits: Simplify modem wholesaling with global management of IP addresses and ISP visibility of their subscribers accounts. Facilitate interconnection settlement billing with flexible collection of accounting records that are mediated to record formats compatible with service provider billing systems. Proactively manage network and service activity with real-time performance monitoring and historical performance reporting based on rich call detail records. Ensure network reliability and high service quality with sophisticated alarm surveillance and fault diagnosis. Network and Service Management Service Activation Service Assurance management offering to include support for dial access, xdsl and cable. This facilitates the migration of subscribers to higher speed access technologies. This IP access management solution helps service providers achieve more rapid time-to revenues, reduce their operations costs and optimize their customer service offerings to help retain customers as well as encourage repeat business and referrals. Preside Dial Access Management Solution Preside for dial access manages remote access switches (RASs) and SS7 Gateways. Preside currently manages the CVX 1800 Access Switch, the CVX SS7 Gateway (CSG), and the CVX Policy Manager (CPM). The integration of Preside with the carrier class CVX dial access product family further enhances the strength of its offering by providing service activation, service assurance, policy service, and customer care and billing functions. Preside service-enabling software for cross-domain, multi-technology networks and services Customer Care and Billing Preside Policy Services Service Control Telephony Domain Optical Domain Data Domain Access Domain Through its CORBA-based open interface, Preside can also support thirdparty remote access devices to provide complete, end-to-end management of networks and services. Remote access devices may be owned and managed by the Internet Service Provider (ISP), in which case network, service and policy management is especially important for ensuring a high service quality. ISPs and corporations that want to focus on their primary business are outsourcing remote access services to service providers. This makes it important for the provider to have management tools that can measure network and service performance against any defined service level agreements (SLAs); manage modem port IP addresses on a global basis; as well as provide ISPs with a view of their end customer accounts. These providers need a robust, carrier class management system like Preside to meet and report on the services guaranteed to their customers. Preside Service Activation Device Configuration Preside has the capability of reaching through element management systems, such as CVXView and SS7View, to perform necessary configuration of the remote access devices, like the CVX 1800 and the CSG, from a central GUI. This in-context reachthrough, coupled with Preside s automatic node discovery, saves operator time and reduces the likelihood of configuration errors that contribute to network downtime. Preside s alarm surveillance enables the operator to easily identify network alarms and efficiently manage the resolution of these alarms from Preside s central GUI using simple point-and-click navigation. Operators learn about alarms and their associated severity in real-time, making it easy to focus their attention on the most critical network problems. This fault management offering is truly carrier class with support for over 40,000 network devices, 500 simultaneous operator sessions, cross domain management and multi-vendor management. Preside eliminates the need to monitor the network from many disparate systems and makes the most efficient use of the operator s time. These factors contribute to the service provider s ability to evolve and grow their network without increasing their operations costs. Preside s alarm surveillance and fault diagnosis capabilities increase network reliability and reduce network outages. This in turn enables the service provider to offer consistently reliable service that builds customer loyalty. Preside Service Assurance Performance Monitoring and Reporting Network and service data received by Preside from devices such as the CVX 1800 is stored and correlated in an Oracle database for use by Preside performance monitoring and reporting applications. Preside s performance management solution for dial access enables operators to proactively assess the health of network devices as well as how the dial access service is performing. Performance Monitoring Operators can easily monitor the dial access network and services for problems and exceptions using various reports that provide current network and service information. These reports provide realtime call performance information; an on-demand view of reasons for call terminations; daily network behavior reports distributed by email or accessible from a web server; and, a report of threshold crossing events and their associated severity. These tools help the operator ensure network health and quality service delivery that keeps customers satisfied. Easily identify performance problems and their potential causes; proactively monitor the network, and enable network resources to be used most efficiently in order to provide optimal customer service that keep revenues strong and growing.

Performance Monitoring: Graphical display of real-time call termination statistics Performance Monitoring: Tabular display of threshold crossing events Performance Reporting: Graphical display of call throughput Performance Event Analysis: Tabular display of specific event details Performance Reporting Preside performance reporting tools are used by network engineers to ensure the most efficient use of network resources. Performance trend analysis provides network planners with a proactive means of managing network growth to help meet SLA criteria. Engineers and planners can use call performance analysis reports to better understand device utilization. By diverting traffic, the network engineer enables a network with the same number of devices to support more customers without impacting the quality of service. Performance event analysis is a critical part of Preside performance reporting. When routine network and service performance monitoring uncovers potential risks to the network or service, operators can use a network and service performance reporting tool that displays very granular information about call sessions, users, and network devices. This detailed information facilitates problem solving to keep service quality high and customers satisfied. Help desk staff can also use this tool to increase their responsiveness to customer inquiries about performance irregularities. By simply generating a report based on an originating number, help desk staff can generate reports on individual call sessions in order to isolate potential causes of network or service performance problems. This equips them with information to communicate the cause for service disruption and arrange for its repair more expediently. Preside Policy Services Address Management and RADIUS Bundling popular services like dial access, telephony and email is a challenge for service providers due to decentralized stores of subscriber data and various management systems. Preside Policy Services provides network-wide centralized management through the consolidation and sharing of subscriber and group profile information. This centralized information can be used to manage customer records, provision services, account for usage, bill for premium services and provide SLAs. Preside Internet Name and Address Management is a policy server that draws from the directory of network,

service and subscriber data to enable service providers to easily manage the IP addresses in their access network down to the port level. Rather than having to make IP address changes to different servers throughout the network, the network administrator makes changes to IP addresses of the RAS or the port on one server. The address changes are then propagated to each device or port. This enables the service provider to reduce manual entry errors and network administration time. Preside Radius is an industry-leading RADIUS server that centralizes subscriber authorization, authentication and accounting information. This server interacts with the Internet Name and Address server to obtain an IP address during the subscriber authentication process. Since Preside Radius draws from the centralized directory of subscriber data, service providers can use the same administration system to easily support customers who maintain their dial account but who want to migrate to new remote access services such as xdsl. Preside Radius can interwork with legacy RADIUS servers if the ISP does not want to migrate existing files to the centralized repository. When a user cannot be found in the database of the Preside Radius server, it will forward the request to the legacy RADIUS server, making the migration to Preside Radius very flexible. Customer network management capabilities of this offering enable service providers to provide ISPs access to subscriber accounts to support them in managing subscriber inquiries. Preside Customer Care and Billing Service Accounting Accounting Mediation Call session records are collected from an SS7 gateway, such as the CSG, to enable Preside to perform accounting mediation functions. The CVX 1800 combined with the CSG has the capability of diverting data traffic off the voice network, thus bypassing existing interconnection billing based on voice switches. The data access network provider terminates the voice network provider s traffic. Therefore, to facilitate revenue collection from interconnection settlement, the data access network provider must be able to seamlessly support the voice provider s interconnect settlement billing system. Call session records from the CSG are collected and stored in an Oracle database. These records are normalized using Preside s accounting mediation application. This tool can output records that are compatible with the service provider s third-party or legacy billing system including Nortel AMA EUR10 and North American AMA. Without Nortel s Preside service accounting solution, network providers would be required to build customized accounting mediation tools that would increase development costs and time to market for their dial access offering. Preside service accounting not only supports the mediation and distribution of records from the CSG, but also from core routers, voice switches and other devices to offer a truly multiservice, multivendor accounting solution. Managing Dial Access Preside s dial access management solution enables service providers to not only manage the underlying access network but the access service that it enables. Service providers realize revenue in a more timely manner through implementing Preside applications that reduce the risk of service disruption that threaten revenue, a centralized store of subscriber information for rapid account and device activation as well as the ability to flexibly collect and distribute accounting records faster to accommodate more timely billing. Preside s scale and breadth facilitates the deployment of more access devices and new services which is consistent with service provider business growth strategies. Speed time-to-revenues through centralized management of subscriber accounts, flexible accounting record collection and distribution and assurance of the reliability and availability of your network and services. Evolve and grow your business with a carrier-grade, integrated management platform that supports multiple domains, technologies and vendors. Differentiate your service offerings through customized views of services and subscriber data.
