Studying in the UK Essential information for those wanting to apply for a Tier 4 (General) or Tier 4 (Child) visa This leaflet is for students from outside the European Economic Area who want to come to the UK to study

The UK recognises the important contribution international students make, and welcomes those who wish to study at our world-class institutions. This leaflet is designed to provide you with some information about the Tier 4 visa routes for those wishing to study in the UK. Always visit our website www.gov.uk/uk-visas-immigration, for detailed and up-to-date guidance before proceeding with your application. Tier 4 Student Visas (points-based system) There are two categories under Tier 4. These are: General student for students aged 16 years and above. Child student for children aged 4 to 17 years. If you wish to study a lower-level course in the UK, or your course lasts six months or less (or eleven months or less, if you are studying English language), you may prefer to use the student visitor route. Please refer to our website for more information. Requirements Tier 4 (General) You must meet the requirements of the UK Immigration Rules. In summary you must: Have a confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) from your sponsor; Have enough money to study in the UK; Meet the English language requirements; Provide all the relevant supporting documents you are asked for with your application.

Requirements Tier 4 (Child) In addition to meeting the requirements for a Tier 4 (General) visa (except the English language requirements), you must show that there are suitable arrangements in place for your travel, reception and care in the UK. Children between 4 and 15 years of age may only be educated at independent fee paying schools. What do you need to apply for a Tier 4 student visa? You will need the following: A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) This is completed online by your chosen place of study (sponsor) and contains details about you, your course, qualifications and confirmation of your English language skills (if necessary). Your sponsor will give you a unique CAS reference number. You will need your CAS reference number to make your application; Finance - You must provide specified evidence (for example original bank statements) showing us that you have enough money to pay for your course fees for the first year of the course you are applying to study and your living costs for up to 9 months (you can use the self-assessment calculator on our website to find out the amount of money you must show). You can rely on money from your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) in some circumstances but you will need to show you have their permission to use this money; Studying in the UK Tier 4

English language requirement If you are a Tier 4 (General) student you will need to show that you speak English. The level of English language proficiency you will need will depend on the level of course you are applying to study. You may also need to provide evidence of your English language ability with your application; Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate You will need an ATAS certificate if you intend to undertake studies in designated science and technical subjects. Tuberculosis (TB) certificate If you are coming to the UK for more than 6 months, you may need to obtain a TB screening test certificate. Please refer to your country s page on our website which will tell you if you need one. Please refer to the guidance on our website www.gov.uk/uk-visasimmigration for more details on these requirements.

It is important that you complete your visa application form correctly. If you do not provide all the information we need, it may lead to your application being delayed or refused. Where documents are requested, it is important that you provide originals. We will not accept scanned, photocopied, printed duplicate or faxed copies of documents (unless we specifically state otherwise). Where these documents are not in English you may need to provide translations to support your visa application. Please note: There are streamlined documentary requirements for nationals from certain countries who are applying from their country of nationality to study at a higher education institution. As of August 2013, these countries were Argentina, Australia, Botswana, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan (if you hold a passport issued by Taiwan that includes the number of the identification card issued by the competent authority in Taiwan), Trinidad and Tobago and USA. This list is reviewed frequently, so you should check our website for the latest information. Studying in the UK Tier 4

How do I apply for my visa? You should be clear about the type of visa you are applying for and read the information on our website. To apply you will need to: Complete your visa application form online; Pay your visa application fee; Prepare all your supporting documents and make an appointment at your local UK Visa Application Centre (VAC); Visit the visa application centre to give your biometric information (fingerprints and photograph) and you may be required to sit a short credibility interview; The interview will be conducted in English, usually be held via video conference and last about 10 minutes. You will be asked questions by a UK Visas & Immigration official on screen. Further guidance for students and information on how to apply in your country can be found on our website: www.gov.uk/uk-visasimmigration You are strongly advised not to confirm your travel arrangements to come to the UK until you have received your visa. Additional information What do I do if my visa is refused? If your Tier 4 visa application is refused, and you think a mistake has been made, you can ask UK Visas & Immigration to check its decision. This is known as an administrative review and there is no charge. You must ask for an administrative review within 28 days from the date you receive the refusal notice.

Can I bring my partner and children with me? Only the following students will be able to bring their partners and children (known as dependants) to the UK: Postgraduate students at higher education institutions on courses lasting 12 months or more; Government sponsored students on courses lasting longer than 6 months. If you are bringing your dependants with you they will also need to show that they have enough money for their living costs (maintenance). An application will need to be made for each dependant, and they will need to meet the requirements. Can my parent accompany me while I study in the UK? There is a visa route which allows a parent to accompany a child who is less than 12 years old and who is attending an independent fee paying day school. Please see our website for further information. Can my parent or relative visit me while I am studying in the UK? Your parent or relative can come to visit you. We offer a six month multiple entry visit visa but they may also want to consider applying for a multiple entry visit visa for a longer duration. We offer visit visas that are valid for 2 years, 5 years and 10 years. Can I work in the UK? Whether you will be allowed to work, and if so how much work you will be allowed to do, will depend on the level of the course you are applying to study and the type of sponsor you will study it with. More information can be found on our website. Studying in the UK Tier 4

How long can I stay in the UK? Your visa will be granted for the whole length of your course. The maximum amount of time you can spend studying at degree level and above is 5 years with exceptions for some courses and PhD students. The time allowed does not include the time spent studying as a child student. Can I stay and work in the UK after finishing completing my course? There are a number of options available to you if you wish to stay in the UK to work after your studies. These are: The Doctorate extension scheme for students successfully completing a PhD or other doctoral qualification at a higher education institution; Tier 2 (General) for those in a graduate-level job; Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) for those who want to develop a business idea; Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) for world leaders in their field; Tier 5 for those undertaking professional training. Please visit our website for more information on these opportunities: www.gov.uk/uk-visas-immigration

Top tips Plan your study and visa arrangements well in advance of your intended travel date; Before you make your visa application, know which institution you will be studying at, what course you intend to follow and where you will be living in the UK; Choose a reputable visa agent if you decide not to complete your visa application yourself, but remember that even if someone else completes your application for you, you are responsible for it. Make sure you read the guidance carefully and ensure that you have the correct supporting documents to submit with your visa application; Take time when filling out your application and make sure that you fill in all the relevant sections Be prepared to be interviewed; Be completely truthful in your application. This is important because failure to do so can result in a 10 year ban. Always visit our website for the latest guidance: www.gov.uk/uk-visas-immigration Studying in the UK Tier 4
