UNIVERSnY OF TORONTO DEp AR TMENT OF NEAR AND MIDDLE &stern CIVllJZATIONS Professor Eleazar Birnbaum Turkish Studies TORONTO, M5S ýcý CA-NADA January 9, 2006 Kiiltür ve Turizm BakanlrðrMüste~ari Sayýn Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ýsen Ankara Dear Professor Dr. Ýsen, The famous scholarly Turcological joumal Türklüok Bilgisi Ara tlrmalarý'' / Journal of Turkish Studies [TÜBA / JTS] was established some 30 ago by Professors Fahir Ýz and inasi Tekin. Since that time it has been continuously publishing scholarly articles written in English and Turkish by many ofthe major experts in Turkish Iiteratures, as well as by promising young scholarso The fact that Ýt Ýs publýshed from Harvard UnÝversÝty, one of the best unýversýtýes Ýn the world and certaýnly the most well-known Ýn AmerÝca, has helped to gýve Ýt an ÝntematÝonal readership and reputatýon, but Ýt Ýs maýnly for the solýd value of Ýts contents that it has gained and enhanced its respect in the field ofturkish stu.?ies. It is for this reason that 1 have myself chosen to publish eight of my articles in TUBA since Ýts inception Ýn ý 977...,..1. ''.t...,, 1 TUBA has been edited by a remarkable husband-and-wife team ofturcological scholars, Dr ÞinasÝ Tekin and Dr Gönül Tekin, who have always mana.l?ed to obtain funds to support its publication. Mter the untimely and tragic death ofdr. Þinasi Tekin in 2004, the solid academic future oftüba will certainly be assured by Gönül HanÝinwith the assistance of two distinguished former students of Þinasi Bey ---Prof.:Dr.Cemal Kafadar ofharvard University and Prof. Dr. Selim Kuru ofthe University ofwashington. But it cannot have an academic future withoutfinancial support! 1 have been Ýnformed that you wquld IÝke to receýve the v~~ws of other scholars as to the value of thýs academýc perýodýcal. It Ýs my opýriýon that TUBA/jTS Ýs perhaps the most Ýmportant and dynamýc Turcologicaljournal beýng pubiýshed today. ItÝsvÝtal that Ýt should contýnue to be a Ieader Ýn Ýts field.

What 1 have wrýtten about TÜBA appiýes equally to the remarkable monograph serýes Sources of Oriental Languages and literatures: T urkish Sources [SOLL], estabiýshed by Þinasi TekinÝn 1977.Up to now nearly 70 volumes have been pubiýshed, many ofthem ''crýtýcal edýtions'' ofrare Turkish texts prevýously unpublýshed. OLL Ýs certainl~ amqng thebe~ In summary, 1 belýeve that TÜBA/JTS and SOLL deserve the greatest support, both moral and financýal, so that they may contýnue to successfully serve the field ofturkýsh Iiterature studýes and brýng it honor. With great respect, Y ours sincerely, ~~~~ Eleazar Birnbaum Professor Emeritus, Turkish Studies University oftoronto, Canada.':::~
