Results after 4 years of the MATCH study Rural Children and their Communities Leading the Way Toward the Enhancement of Sports and Recreation Mathieu Bélanger, PhD Université de Sherbrooke; Centre de formation médicale du Nouveau Brunswick Some new results : Teens are more likely to participate in sports if parents are supportive, but not controlling. Living in rural neighbourhoods (vs urban) is linked to greater maintenance of sport participation. As feelings of competence, autonomy, and relatedness in sports increase, so does participation. Dr. Hope Bilinski Assistant Dean College of Nursing University of Saskatchewan The purpose of this study is to engage preadolescent children (grades 4 6) from rural communities in the development of relevant and meaningful research questions for exploring their participation and commitment to sports and other recreational activities. 1
