Common Mistakes But My Friend Said... You don t need to meet with your advisor, just take the same classes I am. 9
FALSE! You should always meet with your academic advisor prior to enrolling each semester to make sure you are taking the correct classes and on track for graduation. Degree requirements can change and classes your friend took may not apply to you. 10
MSU E-Mail mail.msu.edu Another online resource you should already be familiar with and using is YOUR MSU EMAIL ACCOUNT. It is very important that you check your MSU email daily. Important messages from your professors, messages regarding your student account and bill, and confidential messages from the university are all sent here. Some of these messages are time sensitive; the University s expectation is that you are checking and responding to your MSU email on a regular basis. 11
MSU E-Mail Log in with your MSU NetID & password 12
MSU E-Mail Once you log in, you will be directed to your inbox. Here you can view important messages from your professors, your ANGEL and D2L accounts, and confidential messages from university offices and units. 13
Confidential Messages Confidential messages are very important messages from the University that should be read immediately 14
Confidential Messages To access a confidential message, click on the link in the email message 15
Confidential Messages The link will take you to the Registrar s Office log in screen 16
Confidential Messages Once you have logged in, you will be able to view all confidential messages that have been sent to you. It is important to note that these confidential messages ARE NOT spam, they are very important. Some may be addressed directly to you. For example, the subject line may say: WARNING: Your Orientation Completion Status. This message is directed at you personally and requires prompt attention. Others may read: Important Information about International AOP. Since this is not addressed directly to you, it will contain more general information intended for a group of students that includes you. It is very important that you read all email you receive from the university. 17
D2L and ANGEL Messages Another type of university email you ll receive is a course MESSAGE FROM ANGEL OR D2L. These messages will be addressed from ANGEL and D2L, but don t ignore them! These emails are often how professors communicate with the class or how other course members reach out to the rest of the class. You can also use the email features on ANGEL and D2L to get in touch with your professor or any members of your class. 18
Attaching Documents Many professors will have you turn in electronic copies of assignments via email. Their expectation is that you use your MSU email account to do so, not a personal account such as Gmail. Your MSU email account is how your professor identifies you as a MSU student and member of their course. To do this through MSU mail, make sure you ATTACH THE DOCUMENT, not type the assignment in the text box of the email. To attach a document, click on the Choose File button at the bottom of the screen. Once in the dialog box, select the document and click Open and it will be attached to your email. 19
Common Mistakes But My Friend Said... Don t use MSU Mail, all you get is spam. 20
FALSE! Important messages from the university will ONLY be sent to your MSU email. While you may receive some spam messages, ignoring your MSU Mail could result in an important message being missed about your immigration status, classes, enrollment, and housing. 21
STUINFO stuinfo.msu.edu STUINFO is an online database that allows you to access your personal student information. There are many quick links and tabs included in STUINFO that will help you find important resources on campus. 22
STUINFO: Academics Under the ACADEMICS TAB on the top right of the screen, you can access information regarding your personal academic history. You can view your current class schedule along with past and future ones. STUINFO is where you will go to see your final grades for your courses along with checking to see if you ve made the Dean s list. You can also go here to see if you have any holds on your account that would stop you from enrolling in classes for future semesters. Since some final exams are held at a different time or location during finals week, you can check your final exam schedule here as well. 23
STUINFO: Financial Next to the Academics tab is the FINANCIAL TAB, which goes into detail about your student account, billing history and information about loans and financial aid. Make sure that you check this tab often because billing statements get updated regularly, and if you miss a payment you will get charged a late fee. A hold will also be placed on your account and you won t be able to enroll for classes for future semsters, which could affect your immigration status. (Remember, referring to the academic calendar regularly will help you avoid this!) 24
STUINFO: Confirming Attendance Every semester, you must also use STUINFO to CONFIRM YOUR ATTENDENCE. Even if you have a balance of zero on your bill, you still must confirm your attendence. If you don t confirm your attendence, you will be disenrolled from your classes. To confirm your attendence, look under the Quick Links for the link titled Confirm Attendence. Once you ve been transferred to this screen, click on Click Here. Make sure the words Click Here have changed to Completed otherwise the confirmation did not go through. 25
STUINFO: Guest Access Keep in mind StuInfo allows GUEST ACCESS, in which students may give parents or others access to their online student records. Students are cautioned NOT to share their own passwords with anyone, and guest access allows information to be shared with a guest without giving away the student's password. Examples of information that may be granted through guest access are viewing/paying the bill, viewing financial aid, viewing MSU charges and credits, and confirming attendance. 26
Common Mistakes But My Friend Said... If the balance of your bill is zero, you don t have to do anything. 27
False! Even if you do not have a bill to pay, you MUST confirm your attendance each semester through StuInfo or your classes will be dropped. 28
Learning Management Systems: ANGEL and D2L With learning management systems you can: Receive announcements from your course View the course calendar Tools for homework submission, quizzing options and preparation tools View course resources 29
Learning Management Systems: ANGEL and D2L 30
Common Mistakes But My Friend Said... Nothing important is ever posted on D2L. 31
FALSE! Important course information and assignments may be posted in D2L or Angel. Make sure you review your course syllabus to find out if your instructor will use an online course management system. 32
THANK YOU Welcome to Michigan State University! Good luck with your classes this semester!
