College of Communications Scholarships listed present a selection of those awarded by sponsoring organizations in conjunction with the College of Communications faculty. In addition, communications majors can apply for a wide range of scholarships and awards offered by a host of outside private organizations and professional societies. Information about scholarships and awards is located on the bulletin boards on the fourth floor of College Park. Note: For all scholarships, the notification process does not include a notification to all applicants but only to the selected recipient of the scholarship. The expected date of notification is by the end of May. Alumni Association Scholarship for Communications Majors Amount: $500 (two awards given) Established by: This scholarship was established to encourage co-curricular involvement and to promote service, academic achievement, and leadership in the college. Funding is provided by the College of Communications in partnership with the Cal State Fullerton Alumni Association. Two scholarship recipients will be selected and must serve in two or more leadership areas during the next academic year: 1) hold a top-level position in a major campus activity, 2) serve on the SOAR-Interclub Council, 3) Serve as an officer in a student club, or 4) serve as an ambassador for department/college events. She fought a six-year battle with cancer, but never lost her spirit and hope in her well-fought journey. Application Deadline: March 25 Carli Christina Cummings Scholarship Amount: $1,000 (dependent upon funding) Established by: This scholarship is named for Carli Christina Cummings, in her memory, by Dr. Irene Matz (Carli s Aunt), to support the efforts of students who are in need of financial assistance. Carli Christina Cummings from Erie, Pennsylvania, was tragically taken from life at age 15 in a car accident. Carli was a competitive swimmer and was the recipient of numerous awards, most recently the NISCA State Top 16 Award for the 400 Freestyle Relay and the Varsity Athletic Award for Swimming at
McDowell High School. Carli s hobbies included water polo, dancing, journal writing, photography, gymnastics, snowboarding, and boating. This entry was taken from one of Cali s journal writings: Everyone s life is a journey. It is a journey, a ride, and an obstacle. Everyone hits a bump in the road and everyone makes a wrong turn. But when mistakes are made, they are not meant to be rewound and started over. You are meant to learn from the mistakes and use your newfound knowledge in the future. Application Deadline: March 25 The George Fagin Memorial Scholarship Amount: Varies Established by: This scholarship was established anonymously in memory of George Fagin, an employee on the CSUF campus. Through his daily walk in College Park, he made a great impact on many individuals. His years of service provided a safe and secure environment for faculty, staff and students. In 2012, Mr. Fagin received a CSUF commendation for his excellent service. The scholarship is to support the efforts of students who are in need of financial assistance and/or have participated in community service. One of his most significant accomplishments was founding the Department of Communications at Cal State Fullerton. David Little Scholarship Amount: $500 Established by: This scholarship was established to recognize and honor students with good academic credentials who are in need of financial assistance. Open to: This scholarship is open to enrolled students interested in a career in advertising management or media buying. V.J. Lovero Photojournalism Scholarship Amount: $1,000 (dependent upon funding) Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to assist in educating students who have demonstrated career promise in photography. The scholarship honors the memory of renowned sports photographer V.J. Lovero. Applicants must be enrolled for at least one semester during the next academic year and they must demonstrate professional promise. Open to: This scholarship is open to new and continuing Photo Communications majors. Criteria: Quality of portfolio the certification; 2) Submit a portfolio of ten images on a CD that includes sports and portrait photography, and demonstrates your passion for a specific subject, sports or otherwise; and 3) Submit completed application and portfolio to room CP-450. Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by Professor Emeriti Dr. Maxwell, founding chair of the Department of Communications. Professor Maxwell traveled the world during his lifetime and was interested in international communications. Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing students who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Communications and will be enrolled in a university sanctioned summer, fall, spring semester or academic year study abroad program to assist them in meeting educational and travel expenses. Criteria: Good academic standing. the certification; 2) Write a personal statement discussing the study abroad program in which you will be participating and how this scholarship will help you; 3) Submit application materials to department of communications office, CP-400. 4) Travel award will be generated upon receipt of study abroad program acceptance letter and tuition payment verification must be submitted to the department office. Applications Deadline: Rolling (monthly review process) Miven Venture Partners Amount: $1,000 Established by: This scholarship was established by the Tsao Family Foundation and Miven Venture Partners to support students in need of financial assistance. Applicants must prepare a two part project (can be from a class project) consisting of: 1) 60% articulating brand strategy and 2) 40% to communicate the tag line. Selection will be based on what is distinctive or unique about the project and how well the reader understands the conceptualization of the brand. Other consideration is how well the tag line is promoted aside from an ad campaign. Open to: This scholarship is open to undergraduate students majoring in Advertising. The Society of Professional Journalists Scholarship Amount: $700 Established by: This scholarship was endowed by the Orange County Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. OCVA Rick Pullen Scholarship Fund Amount: $3,500 Established by: The Orange County Visitors Association has establish this scholarship in honor of Rick Pullen, who served as the dean of the college for 15 years. Dean Pullen was an advocate for the Center for Entertainment and Tourism in the College of Communications and has served as a board member of the Orange County Tourism Council. The recipient will be presented with the award at the Orange County Tourism Symposium during spring semester.

Stan Spero Radio Broadcasting Award Amount: $500 (dependent upon funding) Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by the Southern California Broadcasters Association to provide scholarships for students in the field of Radio Broadcast Communications. The scholarship is named for Stan Spero who broke into radio in 1951 as a salesman for KFAC/L.A. Moving on two years later to Gene Autry s KMPC 710/L.A., he spent the next forty-two years as salesman, General Sales Manager, Vice President & General Manager and later, Senior Sports Consultant to KMPC (and
later, KABC.) As GSM, Stan was instrumental in bringing the Dodgers to L.A., and when the station lost the broadcast rights to that team, he played a key role in establishing the new, Autry-owned expansion team Angels baseball, selling full sponsorship on KMPC and a regional radio network. A devoted sports fan, Spero also brought USC football and basketball to the highly popular station of the stars. Stan passed away at the age of 86. Open to: Preference will be given to students who are majoring in Radio Broadcast Communications. Selection of the scholarship recipient will not be based solely on GPA, but may also be based on other factors such as commitment to and promise in broadcasting, service to the school and community, or other criteria that the faculty or scholarship committee considers appropriate. Selection will be made without regard for race, color, national origin, age or sex of candidate. No employees of the SCBA, or employees of the Foundation, shall be eligible for such scholarship. Scholarship grants will be awarded annually. Claire A. Vane Memorial Scholarship Amount: $1,000 (dependent upon funding) Established by: This scholarship is endowed by television executive Ed Vane in loving memory of his wife Claire. Ed Vane was formerly Vice President of Programming at ABC and the president of Group W. Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing RTVF majors who are pursuing an undergraduate degree.
