Finland:Doctoral Candidate positions at the Faculty of Education The next application period for fixed-term Doctoral Candidate positions and for the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Education is September 1 September 18, 2015. Application period and what can be applied for During the time period September 1, 2015 September 18, 2015, the KEVEKO and OPPI Doctoral Programmes invite applications for: a) fixed-term Doctoral Candidate positions A Doctoral Candidate position may begin on 1 January 2016 at the earliest and it is for a maximum of four years. The positions are primarily intended for full-time doctoral dissertation research with the aim of completing the doctoral degree in four years. Other duties than those related to doctoral dissertation research must not compromise the full-time doctoral dissertation research. As a rule, teaching and other duties than those related to doctoral dissertation can be at most 5% (80 h) of the annual working time of the Doctoral Candidate. The Doctoral Candidate is employed either at the Department of Education (Doctoral Candidates of KEVEKO) or at the Department of Teacher Education (Doctoral Candidates of OPPI) according to the candidate s doctoral programme. The salary is based on the salary system of Finnish universities. It consists of a task-specific salary component and personal performance salary component. The task-specific salary component of the Doctoral Candidate is at level 2 4 of teaching and research personnel; 1972,55 2462,01 euros per month. The component based on personal performance is max. 46.3 % of the task-specific salary. The task-specific salary component for a beginning Doctoral Candidate is typically on level 2. Probationary period of 4 months applies. b) the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Turku c) both of the above (a and b) Who may apply Doctoral Candidate positions can be applied by Persons who have an active right to pursue a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Education, University of Turku, and who have not previously received four years of full-time funding for their doctoral studies. Persons who have not yet been granted the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Education, University of Turku, but match the profile of one of the doctoral programmes in the faculty and meet the eligibility criteria for the right to pursue a doctoral degree. As the right to pursue a doctoral degree is a precondition for receiving a Doctoral Candidate position funded by the University, the applicant must apply for both the right to pursue a doctoral degree as well as a Doctoral Candidate position. Persons who already have a doctoral degree from a Finnish university cannot apply for the Doctoral Candidate positions. According to Section 40 of the University of Turku Rules of Procedure a person selected for the post of Doctoral Candidate is required to have a higher university degree and must have an accepted research plan. the capacity to complete a doctoral degree in accordance with the research plan. The right to pursue a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Education, University of Turku can be applied by Persons who meet the eligibility criteria for pursuing a doctoral degree, as stipulated in the Universities Act (558/2009, Section 37) as well as the eligibility criteria for the right to study for a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Education. Applying Application documents Doctoral Candidate positions and the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Education are applied by filling in an electronic form and attaching the required additional documents into the electronic application form. Application documents are specified at the end of the call for applications. Applicants will be notified separately on potential candidates optional, additional interviews. A link to the electronic application form will be published on the website of the faculty. The application form opens September 1, 2015 and closes September 18, 2015. All application documents must be written either in Finnish or in English. Those applying for the Doctoral Candidate positions in OPPI Doctoral Programme must write their research plan in English. Assessment procedure Applications for the Doctoral Candidate positions and for the right to pursue a doctoral degree are reviewed by the steering groups of the KEVEKO and OPPI Doctoral Programmes. Applications for the Doctoral Candidate positions may also be sent for evaluation to national and/or international reviewers. Assessment and selection criteria In the selection of Doctoral Candidates positions the following issues are stressed: quality and feasibility of the research plan, applicant s merits and completed studies. Also applicant s capability and motivation to complete a doctoral degree are evaluated. The applicant s previous funding received for doctoral studies is taken into consideration when defining the period of Doctoral Candidate position. When admitting the right to pursue a doctoral degree, the eligibility criteria of the applicant and the selection criteria of the Faculty of Education are considered in addition to above mentioned criteria. A prerequisite for admission is that there is at least one person who has agreed to act as a supervisor and who fulfills the qualification requirements for supervisors. In addition, the applicant s research topic must fit in with the profile of the Doctoral Programme. Decisions The Dean of the Faculty of Education decides on recruitment of the applicant on a Doctoral Candidate position, based on the proposals of the steering groups of the Doctoral Programmes. The Vice-Dean of research affairs of the Faculty of Education decides on granting the right to pursue a doctoral degree, based on the proposals of the steering groups of the Doctoral Programmes. The names of the applicants who have been selected for the Doctoral Candidate positions as well as the names of the applicants who have been granted the right to study for a doctoral degree will be published on the website of the faculty by the end of November 2015. The names of the applicants who have been granted the right to study for a doctoral degree also will be published on the notice board of the faculty.
