1 1(11) HR 2015 / Doctoral programme of Turku School of Economics 2015 INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLYING FOR FUNDED DOCTORAL CANDIDATE POSITIONS AND THE RIGHT TO PURSUE A DOCTORAL DEGREE IN THE DOCTORAL PROGRAMME OF TURKU SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS NB! Application form ID number 1427 Dear applicant, the detailed instructions described here will help you to successfully fill in and submit your electronic application in the Saimi system used at the University of Turku. Please read the instructions carefully and fill in your application accordingly. Applying for a funded doctoral candidate position or a right to pursue a doctoral degree is done by filling in an application form and attaching the required documents to the application in the Saimi system. NB! The application form has to be submitted by the end of the application period: 18 September, 2015, no later than 23:59:59. Submitting the application in the system after the deadline is not possible. The link to the form is at the top of the advertisement (blue box labelled Fill in the form ). Click the Fill in the form link which opens the Welcome to University of Turku Graduate School call for applications and follow-up system. Start filling in the form by clicking I approve.

2 2(11) After clicking I approve, choose whether you want to fill in a new application for the first time or if you have previously filled in a form and want to use the information you have provided as a basis for this form. If you have filled in the form earlier, you have to use the information you have already given by logging in to the system with the username and password you received with an . More information on the subject at the end of this instruction. The form includes the following tabs: Basic information Information of the Planned Degree Action plan Studies and follow-up Attachments The data fields marked with a star* are mandatory. NB! Due to technical characteristics of the software all the required mandatory questions have not been marked with the star, but these instructions contain detailed information for filling. Fill in your personal details carefully. For submitting the form, all mandatory fields must be filled. The information provided on the form can be changed by the applicant until the deadline has passed. Most of the questions on the form apply to all applicants. However, because this form serves different types of applicants, some of the questions are meant for those who are applying for the right to pursue a doctoral degree at TSE (with or without a funded position), and some of the questions are meant for those who already hold the right to pursue doctoral studies and are applying only for the funded doctoral candidate positions. Read the instructions on each question carefully and answer according to what you are applying with this application.

3 3(11) Basic information Fill in your personal details. Add your personal address, as all the s from the SAIMI system and the University are sent to the address you provide here. Fill in the UTU Student number only if you already have a student number at the University of Turku. Otherwise leave the field blank. Information on the Planned Degree (see next picture) Fill in the information on the degree you are applying for or the degree for which you already have the right to pursue at TSE. In addition, add information on your dissertation research. NB! With this form (form ID 1427) you can apply for the right to study for a doctoral degree only from Turku School of Economics (TSE). *Planned Degree: At Turku School of Economics it is possible to complete the degrees of Doctor of Science in Economics and Business Administration, Doctor of Social Sciences and Doctor of Philosophy. Choose the planned degree according to your basic degree. *Faculty: Turku School of Economics *Major subject: You must apply for the right to pursue doctoral studies for a major subject: Major subjects at TSE. *Topic of the planned doctoral thesis In *The thesis format is compilation dissertation (integrated article format) and The thesis format is monograph sections you have to describe the format of your dissertation. A monograph is an extensive and continuous work of writing on the research topic that does not include separate articles. (*)Supervisors: Information on supervisors is *mandatory, if you already have a study right for a doctoral degree at TSE. If you have two supervisors, name them both by adding another row to the form. If you are applying for a right to study, leave these fields empty. All admitted doctoral candidates are appointed supervisors during the selection process of doctoral candidates. *Major subject at TSE for which I m applying the right to study (or if you already are a doctoral candidate at TSE, specify your major): You must apply for the right to pursue doctoral studies for a major subject: Major subjects at TSE. (This information is asked twice, because the previous field is not technically mandatory (*) and all applicants are required to give this information.) NB! If you are applying for the right to study in TSE Pori Unit, give this information here! * With this application I am applying for (choose one option): A) funded doctoral candidate position, B) the right to pursue a doctoral degree at TSE OR C) The right to pursue a doctoral degree AND a fixed term doctoral candidate position * An overall estimate of the completion rate of my doctoral thesis at the moment (choose one) A) 10 % or less, B) ca. 25 %, C) ca. 50 %, D) ca. 75 % or E) 90 % or more.

4 4(11) Action Plan Include information on your planned schedule and funding for the degree (see next picture). *Abstract of the research plan *This information is mandatory. *Summary of the doctoral dissertation and its current phase *This information is mandatory. *Time plan *Mode of attendance full time? (Yes/No): Choose Yes if you will work on the doctoral project full-time and No if you will work on it part-time (e.g. on the side of another job). You can specify or justify your answer in the Specify here how you are planning to finance your doctoral studies? -field. *Financing plan: Generally describe in the open field how you plan to fund your studies. Next, include the main source of funding for your four-year plan (grant, employment, or grant and employment). In the source of funding field, you can specify and justify your choice of funding. *This information is mandatory. *Have you already been granted research funding? -section, please mark only the funding (minimum of one month in length) which has been granted to your personal dissertation research. Travelling grants etc. are not added to the table. If your answer is Yes, specify the funds according to the source.

5 5(11) * I am applying for funded doctoral training position for the following time period : concerns only those applying for the funded doctoral candidate positions. Add the beginning and end date of the funded position you are applying for. You can apply for a funded position that starts at the beginning of next year at the earliest. A funded position can be granted to a maximum of four years. If you are not applying for the funded position, add e.g. (-), in order to be able to submit your application. * In case I will not be selected for the funding position, I will cancel my application for the doctoral training in this doctoral programme (Yes/No) is meant for those applicants who are applying for a funded position and the right to pursue a doctoral degree in this call for applications. NB! This question is marked as mandatory, though it does not concern all applicants. If you are applying for a funded position and you already have the right to pursue a degree, answer No to this question. Also if you only apply for the right to study for a doctoral degree, answer No. *The topic of my doctoral thesis and its connection to the research profile of TSE: TSE will evaluate the suitability of the research topic in relation to the research profile and expertise of the major subject and its faculty (information on the research profile of TSE). *In this call for applications are you applying a right to study and/or funded doctoral candidate position also from another faculty/doctoral programme at University of Turku? Please, specify.

7 7(11) Studies and follow up Include information on your previous degree that gives you eligibility for the doctoral training (higher university degree, postgraduate polytechnic degree, or a corresponding degree from abroad, which allows the person to apply for the similar level of degree studies in that country). *Highest completed degree: fill in information on the degree that gives you eligibility for doctoral studies *Name of the degree in English * Previous degree (the one that gives you qualification to pursue doctoral studies): give here the name of your completed degree in the original language, if it is in some other language than English. If the name of the degree you have completed is only available in English, repeat the name of the degree here. *School, where you have completed this degree or where you are currently studying at. NB! Give also information on the country of the school/university. *Date of the degree or estimated date of graduation: Add the date when you have completed the degree that gives you qualification to pursue doctoral studies. The degree that gives you eligibility to pursue doctoral studies must be completed no later than 19 October, Major subject *Grade of the final thesis: If you don t have the grade of the final thesis, write I don t have the information. Grade of major studies: Other information on your studies / courses: If your basic degree (the one that gives qualification to pursue doctoral studies) is not completed yet, clarify the state of your studies in the field Other information on your studies / courses. *According to the faculty s requirements, I need to verify my language skills with language tests: Yes or No (see the instructions of TSE on verifying language skills). If you replied yes, write the name and date of the language test in the next section. If you have completed your degree abroad and you are exempted from the language test according to the selection criteria for postgraduate studies at TSE, specify the criteria why. Also add the certificate showing the reasons for exempt as a part of an attachment Copies of degree certificates/diplomas. *This information is mandatory when applying for a right to study for a doctoral degree. All language test results must be sent directly by the test organizer to University of Turku by the application deadline. *If I will be proposed to the funded position or selected to the waiting list, I agree that my name can be published at the University of Turku web pages Information on a completed Bachelor s degree (degree, major, year of completion, university, country) if in a relevant field to the application for a right to study: Give required information on your Bachelor s degree, if you are applying for the study right of a doctoral degree at TSE and you are demonstrating e.g. the amount of previous studies in the major subject also with studies included in the Bachelor s. In that case, add also a scanned copy of the official/officially certified degree certificate as a part of an attachment Copies of degree certificates/diplomas and a scanned copy of the official transcript of records of the degree as a part of an attachment Other attachment. *Have you studied for the doctoral degree full-time, part-time (specify percentage (%) of working hours spent on studies) or on your own time alongside your full-time job, and specify period/s for each one. * This question is mandatory for those applicants who already hold a right to pursue doctoral studies at

9 9(11) Attachments Please, add to the form the attachments that are requested in the call for applications. You can only add one attachment in each section. When necessary attach several files together before attaching them to the application form. The permissible file types are listed in the information section on each attachment. Specification of the required attachments (NB! Attach the documents in the requested format) CV = Curriculum vitae of the applicant *This attachment is mandatory for all applicants. Write your CV according to the instructions of the Academy of Finland and the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity) List of publications *This attachment is mandatory for all applicants. Write your list of publications according to the Publication Type Classification of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture available e.g. on the web pages of the Academy of Finland). Research plan including schedule for the research and studies *This attachment is mandatory for applicants. (max 10 pages (excl. cover and list of references), Times New Roman 12 pt, line spacing 1,5) as a Word-document (in doc or docx format) or rtf-file (Rich Text Format) (See guidelines for preparing your research plan from the Doctoral Programme of TSE web pages). By attaching the research plan to the application form the applicant gives permission for checking the research plan with Turnitin Originality Check (system for plagiarism detection). Copies of degree certificates/diplomas = Degree certificate/s of the degree that gives qualification to pursue doctoral studies (Master s degree or equivalent and when applicable also Bachelor s degree) in pdf-format. *This attachment is mandatory for those applying right to pursue a doctoral degree at TSE. When necessary add here also certificates indicating your language skills (if not the same than the previously mentioned degree certificates) when applying the right to study for a doctoral degree at TSE (see question on language skills on tab Studies and follow up ) Motivation letter *This attachment is mandatory for those applying for the right to pursue a doctoral degree at TSE. Reasons for applying the right to pursue a doctoral degree. Post graduate study plan = personal study plan *This attachment is mandatory for applicants who already hold a right to pursue a doctoral degree at TSE. Other attachment = Transcript of records. *This attachment is mandatory for all applicants. Applicants for a right to pursue a doctoral degree at TSE attach here scanned copies of the original transcript of records of the degree giving you qualification to pursue doctoral studies (Master s degree or equivalent and when necessary also copies of Bachelor s degree (or equivalent)). Applicants who already hold a right to pursue a doctoral degree at TSE, attach here a transcript of records of your doctoral studies from Nettiopsu (pdfformat). Other attachment 2 = Scanned copies of official translations (to Finnish, Swedish or English) of the degree certificates and transcripts of records if the documents are in some other language than Finnish, Swedish or English. * This attachment is mandatory for applicants whose degree certificates and/or transcripts of records are in some other language than Finnish, Swedish or English. Other attachment 3 = Possible reference letters You can remove an attachment from the form by clicking the Delete button. NB! Applicants for a right to pursue doctoral studies at TSE, who have not completed their Master s degree at the University of Turku/Turku School of Economics, must also send the required enclosures listed in the detailed call for applications (updated 31 August, 2015) by mail to Turku School of Economics. The documents must arrive no later than 18 September, 2015 (during office hours), see instructions and postal address from the call for applications.

10 10(11) When you have filled in all the required information in the tabs of the form, click Preview. The system shows a preview of the information saved in the application form. The application can also be printed by clicking Print. When the application is completed, check the information and click Submit. You will receive an to the address you have provided when the form is saved in the system.

11 11(11) You will receive a username and password to your address, which you can use to access the system if you need to edit the form before the application period expires. If you forget your password, you can get a new one by clicking the Have you lost your password? link and by providing the address where the new password will be sent. The address has to be the same one which you provided in the system for the first time. If you have previously applied for a position through the Saimi system at the University of Turku, you may use the information you provided in your previous application as a template. When applying for a new position by using the previous application as a template, please note that the new application might require, for example, attachments that were not requested in the advertisement for the previous position. The required information and the attachments should always be checked carefully before submitting the application. You can sign in to the form either by clicking the Fill in the form link in the advertisement or by the link sent to your . The system will notify what position you have applied for or which forms you have previously filled in. You can edit your form by clicking Edit. When you have changed your form, submit the form again. You can log out from the system by clicking Log out.
