10 TV & Assistive Listening Devices TV & Assistive Listening Devices l Relaxing at the end of the day watching TV l Enjoying listening to music l Catching up with family & friends at a restaurant l Developing interests and learning new skills at an activity centre l Participating in a local community group These are simple pleasures that are often taken for granted but which may be particularly difficult for someone who is deaf or hard of hearing. Wireless TV listeners Easy to set-up & use and will send you the sound of the TV at your preferred volume, without disturbing your family and neighbours. Hearing the world around you Modern hearing aids are very sophisticated and work at their best in a one-to-one situation in a quiet environment. Listening in noisy environments or at a distance can be difficult and requires much more effort and concentration. Using the right technology can ensure that the sound you wish to listen to is delivered directly to your hearing aids, giving you the best possible opportunity of hearing and understanding in a much more comfortable way. If you don t wear hearing aids, there are products to help you too. Streaming devices The latest digital wireless technology which connects your hearing aids directly to all your gadgets and audio devices. Personal amplifiers Really simple to use and will boost the sound whenever you need an extra bit of amplification particularly good if you find hearing aids fiddly. Personal radio aids Neat, discreet and flexible, with digital sound quality and flexible wireless microphones that you can take with you and use in all sorts of situations. Listening to music Direct input leads, neckloops or inductive earhooks are the headphones of the hearing aid world! They re very effective and easy to use. 190 Issue 52 Telephone 01737 247571 Prices exclude P&P Connevans Email sales@connevans.com Information www.connevans.info Shop online www.deafequipment.co.uk

TV & Assistive Listening Devices 10 Wireless TV Listeners Connevans offer a wide range of TV wireless assistive listening systems designed to boost the volume for just one person. There are neckloop options for hearing aid wearers or stereo headsets for people who don t wear a hearing aid. How do the systems work? There are two main parts to these systems: a mains powered transmitter and a wireless receiver with a rechargeable battery all the systems offer a wirefree connection between you and your TV (or audio system). The transmitter base station requires mains power and is placed near the TV. It needs to be connected to the TV either using a wired microphone attached to the TV loudspeaker or more commonly plugged directly into the back of the TV using the SCART, digital optical TOSlink or audio out connection. The receiver is worn by the listener. It has a rechargeable Transmitter Receiver Three ways to listen Neckloop with hearing aid Headset battery and when not in use is placed in the transmitter charging cradle. With some systems, a spare battery can be recharged in the base station whilst the system is in use. All the systems on the following pages can be used with any television, radio or sound system with an audio output and are very much 'plug and play'. Wireless TV listening: which system to choose infra red or digital? Infra red Operates within line-of-sight in the same room. The advantage with infra red is that several systems can be used in adjacent rooms making it eminently suitable for multiple occupancy residences. Digital Radio Can be used anywhere within the range of the transmitter. This allows freedom of movement around the same or adjacent rooms. Also good for those with visual impairment as it doesn t require line-of-sight use. Infra red systems are a popular, economical choice. Digital systems are the best choice for use with a radio or hi-fi, because you can listen in the next room or nearby garden. Remember that digital Freeview, Sky & Cable TV now includes radio channels. If you have a plasma TV, we recommend purchasing a digital, rather than infra red, system to avoid the possibility of interference. All of the TV listeners come with a selection of commonly used leads to make it easy to connect to your TV. Connecting to the latest generation of TVs The most common audio connection found on the latest television models is an optical digital TOSLink output. So, if you have a new TV, you will probably want to choose a listener that has a TOSLink socket please see our comparison chart on pages 194-195. For more information about the different types of plugs and sockets, please see David s Guide on page 250. Neckloop with earphones (or headphones) Neckworn receiver for hearing aid users using T and non-hearing aid users All the neckloop systems offer excellent field strength and good mono sound quality. They also all have a standard headphone socket, making them ideal for those who have a hearing aid but don't wear it all the time. The inductive neckloop allows hearing aid users to listen on the Loop Program ('T') of their hearing aid, which greatly improves the sound quality. Non hearing aid users can use the 3.5mm stereo headphone socket to plug in their own headphones or earphones please see page 203 for our headphone range. Inductive neck loop 3.5mm socket Headset receiver for non hearing aid users In many cases, although they may be able to hear the television, the volume is often too loud for others in the room. Stereo stethoscope style headsets are ideal for hard of hearing people who need to increase the TV volume and do not have a hearing aid. All these systems offer excellent stereo sound quality and a balance control to allow you to adjust the sound if you have different levels of hearing in each ear. 10 TV & Assistive Listening Devices Infra Red InfraLight Swing The InfraLight Swing superceded the previous InfraLight model which was popular with many customers. It has a more modern design and the same excellent sound quality. In the opinion of our evaluation panel the InfraLight Swing is a stylish and well-designed TV Listener. A mini USB socket offers a nice method of connection to a computer. Sonumaxx with headset & neckloop The Sonumaxx is a neck-worn receiver and comes with the option to plug in either the supplied neckloop or headset or any standard earphones/headphones. It is a great choice for people who don t wear their hearing aids all of the time. In the opinion of our evaluation panel, the Sonumaxx offers excellent value for money. Because the receiver doesn t hang from your ears, some people might find it more comfortable to wear. Another handy feature is that the Sonumaxx can run on normal AAA alkaline batteries, so if your rechargeable batteries run out you don t have to wait while they recharge. Digital Radio Swing Digital The Swing Digital replaced the RadioLight, using the latest digital radio technology instead of traditional fm. It has a long operating range and a smart design. Introson TV & Personal Listener The Introson systems both offer good sound quality and the useful addition of a microphone in the receiver, helps you stay in touch with the conversation around you. The Swing Digital has a very long range, which is great for use throughout the house. The sound quality is excellent and our evaluation panel found the receiver comfortable to wear. The Introson systems offer high quality sound, free from background noise. The controls are easy to use, good for those with limited dexterity. Geemarc CL7310 TV & Personal Listener The CL7310 is a TV headset with built-in microphone. The option to select mono or stereo sound, combined with the left/right balance adjustment makes this a good choice for people with a greater hearing loss on one side. Our evaluation panel particularly liked the large volume control buttons on the front of the CL7310 and the sturdy base. Amplicomms TV & Personal Listener The TV-2500 and TV-2510 are not only great for listening to the TV, but they also have a built in microphone so they can be used as a personal listener for nearby conversation switch between the two modes at a simple touch of a button! This makes them ideal for use in family situations. In the opinion of our evaluation panel, these are excellent value for money. The sound quality is very good and the personal listener is a really nice feature. A recommended choice. We were impressed with the long range and loud volume. Amplicomms TV Soundbox wireless speaker The Amplicomms TV SoundBox is a lightweight portable wireless TV speaker that brings TV and music sound close to you so you won't have to have the TV volume turned up too loud. With a tone control and volume of up to 95dB, the SoundBox has excellent sound volume and quality and is ideal for people who struggle to hear the TV but who'd rather not need to wear any equipment. The speaker can be next to you when watching TV and with a range of up to 30m, it can also be taken around the house or into the back garden. The slimline transmitter base is connected to your TV or portable music player. The base is also used as a charging dock for the battery-powered speaker, although it is also possible to connect the power supply directly to the speaker if preferred. There is also an option to connect a portable music player directly to the speaker (rather than via the docking station), which will require an additional 3.5mm stereo jack plug to 3.5mm stereo jack plug, our part number MXA117A (purchased separately, see page 215). It offers complete freedom as it can be placed anywhere in the room, without any trailing wires. It is light and easily portable and we found the range to be very good indoors.
