Building from our mission, vision and the board s strategic guidance, we will develop a plan to move us forward Mission Improve global health through public standards and related programs that help ensure the quality, safety, and benefit of medicines and foods Winter 2015 Vision Board strategic guidance 5 year strategic plan A world in which all have access to high quality, safe, and beneficial medicines and food 1. Strengthen and expand USP s core compendial activities 2. Build and enhance USPs allied compendial programs 3. Explore and evaluate emerging opportunities.. to fulfill public health needs of constituencies and further mission 4. Operate globally 5. Manage all USP programs, products and services efficiently and effectively to maximize their impact The ambition: What do we want to achieve? The strategy: What choices and trade offs will we make to achieve our ambition? People and processes: What needs to be in place for the organization to realize its ambition and strategy?
What do we mean by strategy?..the thinking behind the words Cohesive and mutually reinforcing Knowing versus feeling : Conducting a robust assessment of: Our external environment and how it may evolve Ourselves our unique strengths and our weaknesses Strategy: an integrated set of fact-based choices that will uniquely position USP to create sustainable impact. Maximize return on effort/ investment towards realization of tangible goals Forward-looking versus planning for today s world to ensure ongoing organizational relevance and viability Distinctive, differentiated positioning based on aligning USP core capabilities to stakeholder needs Clear set of decisions, including resourcing trade offs and identification of what to do and what NOT to do 3
Strategic Planning Process objectives and deliverables Strategic Plan Content Objectives: Deliver 5 year strategic plan to the Board of Trustees on Feb 9, 2015, which meets the following: Articulates a 5 year strategy for USP, meeting USP definition of strategy Outlines people/ processes and operational implications of strategic plan (though not substituting for a detailed budget or operational plan) Strategic Plan Process Objectives: Effectively integrate InSight 2020 Initiative input into planning process Maximize stakeholder engagement throughout process to ensure: Collection of best thinking/ inputs possible Buy in and ownership for recommendations Hands-on learning/ capability building opportunities Utilize stakeholder time efficiently and appropriately to avoid disrupting dayto-day business/ obligations Start laying early infrastructure for future planning 4
Where we are today: Over 15 initiatives currently underway to help inform and support execution of a long term strategy The Roadmap Preparation: identify key themes and define new initiatives InSight 2020 Themes and Initiatives : define our ambition and develop plan and goals for each initiative USP 5-year strategy: Putting it together to set a long term course 5 yr cycle Annual mini plan : review progress against plan, course correct, if need Select Initiatives continue/ new ones launch focus is strengthening USP for executing its strategic plan 2/2014 6/2014 11/2014 2/2015 Ongoing process to review, refresh and optimize our strategy and ability to execute it 5
