Fall 2013 Fletcher ASN Admission Guide 2 Associate of Science in Nursing Program Admission Information Fall 2013 Clinical Program Detailed clinical admission requirements and the clinical admission check list for the program are included in this guide. Students who are not admitted into clinical for Fall 2013 must re-apply for admission for a future Fall semester. Clinical admission requirements are reviewed annually and are subject to change. It is the student s responsibility to obtain a copy of the current year s admission guide to meet admission requirements for the year in which they are applying. The admission guide is available on the Fletcher website (www.fletcher.edu). College Admission Requirements Applicants who are interested in the Associate of Science in Nursing Clinical Program should complete a college admissions application. The application can be found on the Fletcher website at www.fletcher.edu/admissions. Applicants should apply for pre-nursing for the Spring 2013 semester (although the associate of science in nursing clinical program will not begin until August). If you are accepted to the program, your major will be changed to nursing. Associate of Science in Nursing Clinical applicants must meet all general admissions criteria and be unconditionally admitted to Fletcher in addition to the program specific requirements contained in this document. Unconditional admission is granted once a student has submitted all materials required by the Office of Admissions and these items have been positively evaluated. Unconditional admission cannot be granted to an applicant/student with outstanding holds from any school in the Louisiana Technical Community College System. New and returning (did not attend in Fall 2012) students must submit a completed admissions application in order to be considered for the program. Program Admission Requirements A completed Application for Admission to a Nursing or Allied Health Program must be submitted along with the required documents to the Department of Nursing by the deadline. The Associate of Science in Nursing Clinical Program Admission Checklist and Instructions sheet must be attached. Official College Transcripts If you attended ANY college or university prior to applying at Fletcher, you must submit official transcripts. Transcripts must be submitted even if credit was not granted. Official college transcripts must be sent directly from all previous institutions to Fletcher Technical Community College for a formal evaluation of credits earned to determine what previous coursework will transfer to Fletcher. Transcripts should include course work that is in progress. Transcripts from out-of-state colleges or universities and/or transcripts from private Louisiana colleges or universities MUST include course descriptions for all courses taken. You will need to request the college or university send your official transcripts to Fletcher via E-Script or regular mail. If the transcript is hand delivered, it must be sealed by the issuing institution. Testing Requirements Fletcher s ASN Clinical Program requires the HESI A-2 entrance examination. Any applicant who has previously taken the HESI-A2 must submit official scores with their application. The scores must be within one year from the anticipated date of enrollment. Students must score a composite score of 80% in order to be considered for clinical admission. The HESI-A2 test will be offered at Fletcher at various times throughout the year. Please check the
Fall 2013 Fletcher ASN Admission Guide 3 website for test dates and times. The cost of the test is $42*. You MUST pre-register for the test. Contact Student Services to schedule a test date. * The cost of the test is subject to change. Space is limited. Test registrants MUST check in with the Student Services no later than 30 minutes prior to their test time. Pre-registration is done on a first-come first-served basis. Test registrants must bring a photo ID and payment receipt on the date of testing. Any examinee wishing to retake the HESI A2 examination must wait a minimum of two months before being eligible to repeat the exam and may not take the exam more than three times. Any test registrant for the HESI-A2 requiring accommodations for testing must notify Fletcher at least two weeks prior to their scheduled testing date. Accommodations requests must be accompanied by a current evaluation. These requests must be turned in to Student Services. A special accommodations form is attached in the Enclosed Forms section of this guide (if applicable, see page 11). GPA (Grade Point Average) Requirements In order to apply for admissions into the clinical program, the grade point average (GPA) of all nursing prerequisite coursework (including repeated courses) must be at least 2.75. For a list of prerequisites, see Appendix C. Essay Submit a typed essay with a minimum of 200 words explaining your interest and objectives for pursuing a degree and career in nursing. Certified Background Check All applicants are required to obtain a background check from their local sheriff s office. The approximate cost is $10. The results must be submitted with your program application packet. Admission Application Deadline Completed Application for Admission to Nursing or Allied Health Program and all required supporting documents must be received by the Department of Nursing no later than Thursday, March 28, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. It is recommended that you send your information certified mail or hand-delivered. Only completed applications will be reviewed for admission. It is the applicant s responsibility to make sure that all application materials are received by the deadline dates. Submit all documents together in a professional and organized manner in a folder or envelope. Do not submit in a notebook, binder, etc. You should keep photocopies of all documents submitted. Fall 2013 Fletcher ASN Admission Guide 4 What s Next? Hand Deliver to Physical Address 5396 Hwy 311 Houma, LA 70360 Following the Spring 2013 semester, applications will be reviewed. All required components will be weighted, and all weighted parts will be combined for a total score. These scores will then be ranked, and the top total scores will be selected for the program. Applicants with the top total scores will then be given information regarding orientation and registration. Five to ten applicants next in line will be considered alternates in the case that one or more of the selected candidates does not or cannot register for the program. In the case that two students end up with the same final score, the date of application will be used to determine which will become a candidate. All applicants will receive written notification of their status. Accepted and alternate students must respond by the indicated date on the acceptance letter. Failure to respond by the indicated date will result in cancellation of your acceptance. What Happens If I Am Offered Admissions to the Program? Orientation - Registration All accepted clinical applicants will receive written notification regarding the specific date, time, and location of orientation. At that time, students will be given information regarding registration for ASN clinical courses, book lists, along with other requirements. If you do not attend this mandatory orientation or make prior arrangements, it will be assumed you are declining the conditional acceptance to the program. Medical Forms Due to the nature of the program, specific requirements must be met prior to enrollment into ASN. All applicants accepted to the ASN program will receive a History and Physical Form that must be completed by his/her medical care provider and submitted before registering for classes. Background Checks Accepted students will be required to obtain and pass a Criminal Background Investigation and FBI fingerprinting. Fees associated with these requirements are the student s responsibility. You will receive information about these requirements during orientation. Applicants who are offered admission to the ASN Program must not have a criminal record of pleading guilty or no contest to, or a conviction of a felony. If you, the student, has plead guilty or no contest to or have been convicted of a felony, you are immediately declared ineligible for the ASN Program at Fletcher Technical Community College. Drug Testing Applicants who are offered admission to the program are required to pass a drug screen prior to being admitted. Applicants who receive positive results for synthetic drugs, amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, marijuana, benzodiazepines, opiates, phencyclidines, Ritalin*, or Adderall* will be dismissed from the program immediately.
Fall 2013 Fletcher ASN Admission Guide 5 *Positive results for Ritalin or Adderall accompanied by a prescription and letter from the doctor may be reviewed. Students will be subject to random drug testing at various times throughout the ASN program to meet requirements of clinical sites. Schedule and Work Recommendations Due to the fast pace, challenging, and rigorous academic demands of the ASN program, the nursing faculty urge students to avoid full-time work commitments. Clinical schedules are subject to last-minute revisions each semester. Clinical rotations are scheduled at a variety of clinical sites that may be over 20 miles or more from campus. Therefore, students personal commitments must remain flexible to meet course objectives and accommodate program requirements. Reliable transportation is needed due to the distance of some of the clinical sites. Advanced Standing/Re-entry (Prior Nursing Credits) In order for a student to request advanced standing/re-entry into the nursing program, the student must meet all general Fletcher admission criteria and be unconditionally admitted to Fletcher Technical Community College for the requested semester of entry. New students to Fletcher must submit an admission application and be unconditionally admitted to Fletcher Technical Community College prior to submitting the Advanced Standing/Re-entry Request Form. We do not have a separate class for students requesting advanced standing. Your official transcript will be reviewed and placement will be made in the on-going class provided there is a vacancy and all admission criteria have been met. Each transcript will be reviewed and handled on an individual basis. Students seeking credit for previous nursing courses must have received a grade of at least a B in the courses for which they wish to receive credit and are required to pass a placement test. Nursing courses must have been completed within the last 2 years. If an applicant has prior nursing credits and wishes to apply for advanced standing into the nursing program, he/she must follow the Advanced Standing Procedure as listed on Fletcher s website. Please be aware that there are special application deadlines for advanced standing. What if I am Accepted? Although a student may be accepted into the clinical portion of the program, the Louisiana State Board of Nursing may deny eligibility to enter/progress in clinical nursing courses based on prior criminal activity and/or positive drug screen Fletcher Technical Community College Nursing department must comply with the Louisiana State Board of Nursing s decisions. Once a candidate becomes an ASN clinical student all ASN policies and procedures must be followed. Any ASN clinical student admitted into the program will be required to pass a level appropriate pharmacology exam before each clinical rotation. In addition, ASN clinical students only have two opportunities to take any nursing course(s) at Fletcher. A failed second attempt (whether the student resigns from the program or does not successfully complete the course/program), the student will have to wait 5 years before reapplying to the program.

Fall 2013 Fletcher ASN Admission Guide 7 Appendix A Associate of Science in Nursing Clinical Admission Checklist and Instructions for Fall 2013 Applicants to the Fletcher s ASN Clinical program must complete and submit the following information in order to apply. If at any point, the candidate does not comply with any part of this process, the candidate will not be eligible for the program and will have to re-apply for a future clinical class. It is highly recommended that information be submitted together in a professional and organized manner in a folder; NOT in a notebook or binder. It is recommended that you hand-deliver all information including official transcripts. Please make sure official transcripts are left in the sealed envelopes; they will not be accepted if they are opened. All applicants must submit all of the following: 1. All applicants must be unconditionally accepted to Fletcher. New and returning students (did not attend Fletcher in Fall 2012) must: Complete an admissions application online at www.fletcher.edu and pay the $10 application fee. If the applicant graduated from a Louisiana high school in 03-04 school year or afterward, their transcript will be accessed through the statewide student transcript system. Proof of immunizations [2 MMR shots (measles, mumps, and rubella), a current tetanus- diphtheria (TD) shot taken within the last 10 years, and a meningitis vaccination]. Proof of registration with Selective Service. This is a mandatory, non-negotiable requirement for all male students ages 18-25. Proof of Louisiana residency. A resident is one who has lived in Louisiana for 365 days preceding the anticipated date of enrollment. If the applicant cannot provide proof or is not a Louisiana resident, he/she will be charged non-resident tuition. 2.
