For the PhD School, duration of the programme, number of positions available, number of studentships, research areas and training programmes are indicated. The number of studentships may increase as a result of funding from public and private institutions, provided that the related agreement be signed before the completion of the relative public competitions. An increase in the number of available studentships may result in an increase in the number of positions opened for public competition. Duration: 3 years. Positions: 18. Economic dynamics, theory of value and income distribution. Economics of financial intermediaries and financial markets. Risk management. Asset pricing. Technical and operational profiles for corporate finance. Regulation of the financial industry. Training programme and activities: The PhD Programme offers advanced training in economics in order to shape professionals capable of performing analysis and scientific research in both theoretical and applied economics at universities, financial institutions, public and private organisations, nationally and internationally. Students are also trained to carry out research in private sector companies with specific interests in fields controlled by the public sector (eg., transport companies, utilities companies, etc.). The programme provides advanced teaching in Mathematics for economics, Econometrics, Research methods, Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, followed by in-depth lessons related to some specific areas of research. The formulation of the final dissertation relies on the supervision of academics and researchers selected according to their specific competences, and is monitored also through a programme of seminars. Art. 2 Assessment procedure The comparative evaluation for admission to the PhD School aims at establishing the candidates' aptitude for scientific research in the disciplines studied at the PhD School. The comparative evaluation of applicants considers CVs and qualifications. - 3 -
Art. 3 Admission requirements Application for participation in the competition, with no restrictions with respect to age and nationality, is open to candidates holding a Master's degree, or a university degree obtained under the education system prior to Ministerial Decree no. 509 of November 3 rd, 1999, or an equivalent university qualification obtained abroad and recognised as eligible. Application for participation is also open to candidates that shall obtain the qualification referred to in the first paragraph by January 31 st, 2014. Italian, EU and non-eu candidates that obtained, or will obtain, a qualification abroad, by January 31 st, 2014 for the sole purpose of admission to the PhD School will have to request recognition of its eligibility in the application form. To this end, the application shall be accompanied by appropriate documentation to enable the Admission Board to rule on the request for eligibility. Art. 4 Application form Candidates who intend to participate in the competition must submit an application to the Rector of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore within 30 days from the day following the publication of this public announcement in Gazzetta Ufficiale della Repubblica Italiana. Applicants must fill out the application form available online at: http://milano.unicatt.it/dottorati-bandi http://scuoledidottorato.unicatt.it/defap In the application form, available in Italian and English, candidates shall precisely declare under their responsibility: - personal information: surname, first name, fiscal code (for Italian nationals only), date and place of birth, citizenship, residence and domicile elected for the purposes of the competition; - should candidates possess dual nationality, one of which is for a EU member state, they may opt for EU citizenship; - EU and foreign nationals should indicate an Italian domicile if possible, or the address of their Embassy in Italy, elected as domicile; - graduates: qualification, date it was obtained and name of the conferring university, or foreign degree; - 4 -
- undergraduates: qualification candidates are studying towards, expected date it will be obtained and name of the conferring university (whether in Italy or abroad); - foreign languages known besides English. A printed and duly signed copy of the application form along with the documentation specified below must be forwarded, in.pdf or jpeg format, to dottorato.economia@unicatt.it within the date of expiry of the present public announcement: - detailed curriculum vitae et studiorum; - graduates: self-certified Master's degree document with final mark and exam transcripts, or certification of qualification obtained abroad with final mark and exam transcripts; - undergraduates: self-certified proof of enrolment in one of the above-cited degree programmes with exam transcripts, or in a university programme abroad with exam transcripts; - certification of any other qualifications, such as postgraduate and advanced specialisation degrees, obtained in Italy or abroad, with exam transcripts; a copy of any other qualification considered useful for the purposes of the comparative evaluation, and a list thereof on plain paper; - a copy of the publications considered useful for the purposes of the comparative evaluation, and a list thereof on plain paper; - (at least) two cover letters by academics. The documents submitted by the candidates who participated in the "pre-application" phase will be considered valid; these candidates shall have to produce only those documents that complete their application. Within 20 days after the expiry date of this public announcement, candidates may be contacted individually for an interview, via Skype, to discuss their motivations and research interests and to answer any questions that the Examination Board may have. It is the candidates responsibility to notify promptly of any change of residence or domicile elected for the purposes of the competition. Candidates holding a foreign university qualification not yet recognised as eligible, or that shall obtain it by January 31 st, 2014, shall accompany their application with the necessary documentation to enable the Admission Board to rule on the request for eligibility. The University Administration offices will assume no responsibility for misdirected communication due to incorrect residence or domicile information provided by candidates or to absent or late notification of any changes thereof. Art. 5 Examination Board The Examination Board of the comparative evaluation for admission to the PhD School shall be appointed, upon the proposal of the Steering Committee, by Rector's Decree issued by the university of the PhD School of reference in agreement with the other university. The Examination Board consists of three tenured academics of the scientificdisciplinary sectors pertaining to the PhD School, to whom no more than two (also foreign) experts from institutions and public and private research institutes may be added. The appointment of these experts is mandatory in the case of agreements with small and medium-sized enterprises. - 6 -
Art. 6 Admission to the PhD School Candidates are admitted to the PhD School according to their ranking, until coverage of the number of positions opened has been completed. The results of the competition will be made public on January 13 th, 2014 via publication at: http://milano.unicatt.it/dottorati-bandi http://scuoledidottorato.unicatt.it/defap http://www.unimib.it Art. 7 Enrolment The admission ranking list will give notice of candidates' university for enrolment as determined by the Steering Committee. Should one or more candidates selected for a fee-based position be offered a studentship-based position, they will be automatically reassigned to the university in which the studentship was made available. Should one or more candidates short-listed for a PhD position but not admitted to the PhD School be offered a position (either studentship-based or fee-based), they will be automatically reassigned to the university where the position was made available. The candidates admitted to the PhD School that have to enrol at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore must hand in or send Ufficio Dottorati di ricerca of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore - Largo Gemelli 1, 20123 Milan, within 7 (seven) days from the day after receipt of request via email, the following documentation: completed application form to enrol in the PhD Programme or PhD School (on officially approved paper), available online; any proof of enrolment in a Postgraduate School, Advanced Specialist programme, Italian Postgraduate programme, Master's programme or any other university programme; in this case, the document must be accompanied with a written commitment to suspend attendance thereof; 2 card-size photographs. The candidates admitted to the PhD School that have to enrol at Università degli Studi di Milano - Bicocca must complete enrolment via Segreterie on-line within 7 (seven) days from the day after receipt of request via email. At enrolment, non-eu citizens must also produce a copy of a visa for study / university reasons. - 7 -
Art. 8 Studentships Tuition fees for PhD Programmes or PhD Schools at Università Cattolica and Università degli Studi di Milano Bicocca are set out annually by their respective Board of Directors. The studentship amounts and the conditions for their conferment to PhD students, as well as the grants for research in Italy and abroad, are approved annually by the Board of Directors, upon consultation with the University Senate and according to the following criteria: a) studentship and grant amounts may not be lower than those determined by law; b) PhD students awarded studentships are exempt from paying tuition fees; c) studentships are conferred according to the merit-based ranking defined by the Admission Board. The enjoyment of a study grant to attend a PhD Programme and School is compatible with other income earned, also on a regular basis, in the calendar year of the study grant, provided that such income does not exceed the amount set out by the norms of the university in which the PhD student enrols. In case income limits are surpassed, the study grant will be revoked for the year in question. For the verification of the income limits, studentship assignees shall annually declare the income earned and notify exceeding of the prescribed limit. The studentships may not be combined with any other study grant however conferred, with the exception of grants for research in Italy and abroad as provided by law. The costs for the funding of studentships not covered by funds allocated by the decrees of the Ministry of Education, University and Research may be covered by the university with its own budget: with specifically-destined funds, with university funds for scientific research, with third-party-funded research sums, or through agreements with parties outside the University to be signed prior to the issue of the public announcement, also in accordance with the laws in force. The studentships are annual and are renewed provided that the PhD students have completed the programme of activities set for the previous year. The study grants are paid in monthly instalments. The study grant amount shall be increased by max. 50 percent, for a period no longer than 18 months, if the PhD student is authorised by the Steering Committee to conduct research abroad. - 8 -
Public employees admitted to the PhD Programmes are placed, upon request, on special leave without pay for study purposes for the period of normal duration of the Programme, and benefit from studentships, if conditions allow. Pursuant to Art. 52, Paragraph 57, of Law no. 448 of December 28 th, 2001, in case of admission to fee-based PhD positions, or of renunciation of a studentship, students on leave maintain their salary, social security and pension conditions as granted by the public administration with which they have an employment relation. If, after obtaining the PhD degree, the employment relation with the public administration is terminated by the employee within two years, amounts paid have to be reimbursed. Candidates previously in receipt of grants, even if for one year only, are excluded from receipt of PhD studentships. PhD students not in receipt of any study grant enrolled at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore are required to pay annual tuition fees in the amount of 1,800.00 (one thousand eight hundred/00) in two instalments of equal value: one on enrolment or renewal of registration, and one on June 30 th of each year. PhD students not in receipt of any study grant enrolled at Università degli Studi di Milano Bicocca are required to pay annual tuition fees in the amount of 850.00 (eight hundred and fifty/00) in two instalments: 600.00 (six hundred/00) on enrolment, and 250.00 (two hundred and fifty/00) by May 16 th 2014. Art. 9 Obligations of PhD students PhD students are required to regularly participate in the activities set out in their curricula, and to commit to the regulatory norms of their University of enrolment. Art. 10 Conferment of PhD degree The procedure of PhD degree conferment is governed by the regulatory norms of the University of enrolment.
