Web Site Objectives These objectives were defined and agreed in Aug 2008: 1. Ability to create and maintain content by the Clan members without the need for specialised computer skills. 2. Enable authorised members of the Clan to change Web site content at any time. 3. Provide up to date information about Clan events. 4. Encourage new members to join the Clan Association. 5. Facilitate communications between members. 6. Maintain and enhance current Web site content including the Clan newsletter, About Us, Clan History, Genealogy. 7. Maintain and enhance links to other Web sites. 8. Help establish family connections. 9. Encourage Clan members to contribute stories, photos and family history information. 10. Enable members to share family history information and keep the information current. 11. Allow users to view and navigate family trees in a user-friendly manner. 12. Make it easy for users to contact the Clan Office Bearers and Representatives. 13. Users are automatically notified when Web site content is updated. 14. Provide a single, authoritative source of data about membership of the Clan Association, including financial status. 15. Enable members to submit donations electronically. 16. Make it easy to find information on the Web site. Dysert O Dea Clan Association. Copyright 2013. All rights reserved. 3
Current Status All of those objectives have been met except that: Online access to Clan Newsletters was removed following a decision taken at the Triennial General Meeting in Ennis in July 2011 significant privacy issues. The Online Donations application was never activated. A Family Tree application was delivered but was removed because of a lack of interest and we were running short of disk space. We do have a single, authoritative source of data about membership of the Clan Association, including financial status but this is a separate system and is not part of the Clan web site. Current Status Additional capabilities introduced during the last 4.5 years: An Australian Online Shop. Version 1 attracted a small number of customers. Version 2 addresses a usability issue where anyone can now access the product catalogue and you only need to logon with a password when you wish to submit an order. An online registration system to make it easy for people to book for events like this one. Version 1 was used as part of the registration process for this event 3 years ago and attracted a small number of customers. Version 2 simplified the online registration process by asking for a minimum amount of information up front with a followup email asking for additional information. The system can be used to handle online bookings for the next Clan Gathering in Ennis in July 2014. Dysert O Dea Clan Association. Copyright 2013. All rights reserved. 5

Questions about Photos 1. What if I have renamed my files to give them meaningful names? This is not required but it s OK as long as you avoid special characters, particularly the apostrophe. If you have an apostrophe in the file name for a photo, the photo will get lost. This is because the apostrophe (single quote) is also used as a string delimiter. File names containing special characters might be OK on Windows but not on other platforms such as Linux (which is commonly used as the operating system for web servers) and vice versa. 2. What if I can t find a suitable album name in the list? Send a request to the Webmaster, preferably using the special Contact Us form: Recommend a New Photo Gallery Category 3. Can I edit a photo after it has been uploaded? You can edit the data about the photo (album name, title or description) but not the actual image. 4. What if I upload a photo into the wrong album? Edit the photo and select a different album name. 5. What if I need to change the title or description? Edit the photo and make the changes. 6. What if I need to edit the actual image after it has been uploaded? You will need to delete the photo from the web site, edit the image on your PC and upload the photo again. 7. What happens when I delete a photo from the web site? The photo is deleted immediately, i.e. there is no prompt to ask Are you are sure?. 8. What do I do if I accidentally delete a photo from the web site? You will need to upload the photo again. Dysert O Dea Clan Association. Copyright 2013. All rights reserved. 19
