User Guide Adding content to your Website To add or replace content on your website you will need to log in to your Content Management System (Joomla) using your username and password. If you do not already have access to your CMS you will need to register your details and we will create an account for you. Click on Login via your website then click Register to enter your details. You will receive an email notification with your Joomla username and password. Below is a guide to help you get started with Joomla, however for more information please refer to the Help function on your Joomla account this will give you a step by step guide to many of the tools available to you. Control Panel: Your control panel allows you to manage the content on your website. Adding a New Article Select the Add New Article tab from the control panel. You will need to give the article a Title and assign the section to Uncategorised. Article Options: These options appear in the top-right hand corner of the article-editor page Article ID: Joomla s internal ID for the article State: The articles state (published or upublished) Hits: The number of times the article has been viewed Revised: The number of times the article has been revised Created: The articles creation date Modified: When and if the article has been modified Adding text: Insert your text in to the editor window (you can free type or copy and paste the text into this box). Use the editing tools to change the font, size and colour of your text etc. You can create headings using the Format tab just highlight the text you want to convert and select the heading type from the Format tab.
Inserting Images Place your cursor in the text box to position your image, select the Insert/ Edit Image button from the editor tool. Click on the image file name to insert, click on the right of the file name to view the image properties. CRTL+Click to select multiple files. Adding a link to the Image: Type the website address into the URL bar. Aligning Images: Select a position from the Alignment drop down list, alternatively use the Margin parameters. Once you are happy with the image selected click the place in the text editor where you want to insert the image, click Insert. Nb. Create a folder with your images, ready, on your desktop to make it easier and quicker to access images.
Publishing an Article Once you are happy with the text and images you will need to assign the article s access level to one of the following options: Public: Everybody (Recommended) Registered: Logged-in Users Special: Administrators only You can also set the time and date you want to start and finish publishing the article. Once you are happy with your articles and the parameters, select Yes to Publish then click Apply. Managing Exiting Articles You can manage your existing articles using the Article Manager tool, accessed via the control panel. With Article Manager you can: Edit Archive Order Publish Unpublish Delete articles
Unpublishing an Article In the articles Published column, click the green check mark to change it to a red X. Please note that unpublishing an article doesn t remove the menu item that points to it. The menu item is still listed in its original menu if users click that item, they get an error page, so you have to unpublish the menu item as well. Unpublishing a menu item: click on the Menu Manager icon from the control panel. In the published column of the appropriate menu item click on the green check mark to change it to a red X Editing an existing article Select the Article Name from the Article Manager to launch the editor tool. Once you are happy with the changes made to your article click Apply. Preview your article in a new window by clicking the Preview icon. Click the save icon to close the editor tool.
Menu Items A Menu Item is an article reached through a link from the Home Page helping to organise your website into sections and categories and improving the navigation for your users. By assigning articles to categories you can display individual articles as menu items. Uncategorised articles are free-floating on your site we advise you should have relatively few uncategorised articles. Creating new Menu Items Click on the Menu Manager icon on the control panel to launch the Menu Manager. Click the icon in the Menu Item(s) of the menu for which you want to add an item.
Menu Item Manager opens (as per image below) Click the New button to launch the New Menu Item page (shown below) New Menu Item Page To create an internal link one to an article on your website click in the Internal Link to open it and then click Articles below it.
Below the Articles node click Article; then click Article Layout below it. The Article Layout Page: Enter the Title and Alias, respectively for the new menu item. Make sure the Display In drop-down menu is displayed to the correct menu i.e. Main Menu
Next steps: Make a selection in the Parent Item list to specify whether the new menu item should be in a submenu. If you leave the Top selected, your new menu item will be a normal menu; if you select any other menus in this list; your new menu item becomes a sub item of that menu. In the Access Level List, set the access level of the new menu item. In the On Click, Open In List; specify how you would like to display the article when a user clicks on your new menu item. Linking a Menu Item to an Article The last step is linking the new menu item to an article. Click the Select button in the Parameters Basic Section of the Article Layout Page The article-selection page opens (as per below) Select your New Menu Item from the list the article selection pages closes. Click the Save button to close the Article Layout page. Your menu item has been saved.
Media Manager The Media Manager is a very useful tool for uploading or deleting files in the /images/ directory on your web server. You can upload new files, delete existing ones, and create subdirectories. The Media Manager offers two views: thumbnails view and details view. The first (thumbnails view) will show a preview of the image files. The second (details view) will show the file name, dimensions, and file size. There is also a handy 'delete' button next to each file. For further assistance, please refer to the Help function on your Joolma account.
