Executive summary Today s organizations are embracing virtual and cloud infrastructure as new models for the efficient delivery of IT services. These new approaches help IT efficiently meet the accelerated demands of their business. However, additional challenges are emerging in how to ensure the right protection of data and applications in these environments. IT organizations are finding it difficult to meet stringent business SLAs for mission-critical data recovery in virtual data center environments. HP Data Protector, an enterprise-class backup and recovery solution, helps organizations meet these challenges with fully-automated, policy-based protection for VMware based cloud environments. Data protection challenges in increasingly virtualized data centers With over 50 percent of workloads now deployed in virtualized infrastructure, IT organizations are increasingly leveraging mission critical applications in these virtual environments to maximize resource utilization and reduce overall cost of operations. VMware, the leading vendor in virtualization, offers advanced tools to manage, monitor, and maintain virtual server environments as the typical IT operation grows in size and complexity. The success of virtualization is the basis of a new model for the delivery of IT services infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS). In addition to the standardization that comes with virtualization, IaaS enables workload provisioning and consumption in a matter of minutes. While these new deployment models enable IT to meet the accelerated demands of business users, the typical backup and recovery challenges are even more pronounced in these environments and must be addressed. These challenges exist mainly around the impact of backup and recovery processes on production environments. In additional to these traditional challenges, a large virtual environment can have thousands of virtual machines running the same operating system (e.g., Microsoft Windows or Linux). The duplication of information within virtualized data stores drives enormous consumption of backup storage resources and associated capital expenditures. Additionally, virtual data centers are inherently dynamic; there is always a risk that not all mission critical information is adequately protected a result of backup administrators being unaware of all the changes occurring in these environments. HP Data Protector: Simplifying backup and recovery through advanced integration The potential growth in deployment of virtualization in data centers puts data protection at center stage as a key challenge. HP Data Protector, the flagship enterprise on-premise backup and recovery software, addresses the challenges of enterprise class data protection in virtual environments. HP Data Protector fully integrates with VADP (VMware API for Data Protection), empowering you to easily deploy and execute advanced backup and recovery processes for your virtual environments. Advanced snapshot functionality provides zero impact protection of mission-critical applications to meet even the most demanding business SLAs. Powered by HP StoreOnce, HP Data Protector offers federated deduplication that maximizes storage efficiency and recovery performance in virtualized environments across premise-based and cloud infrastructure. Maximize backup efficiency with HP StoreOnce Federated deduplication Powered by the industry s most powerful deduplication technology, HP StoreOnce, HP Data Protector delivers high-performance and resource-efficient data protection that improves storage utilization Figure 1: HP StoreOnce Federated Deduplication can be deployed anywhere at an application source, a backup server, or a target appliance such as StoreOnce Backup appliance B6200 or HP Data Protector software store 3
across the virtual data center while reducing the overall cost. The combined HP Data Protector software and HP StoreOnce Backup appliance solution enables federated deduplication, which gives you the flexibility of tri-location deduplication: at the application source, backup server, or backup target device (See Figure 1). A federated approach to deduplication supports the compelling notion that your organization should only have to deduplicate information once and to do so efficiently. Integration with HP StoreOnce Catalyst interface enables HP Data Protector to centrally manage low-bandwidth data replication across multiple virtual data centers for disaster recovery. Typical virtual data centers have hundreds of virtual machines, and many are based on similar VM templates. This scenario creates very high levels of redundant information across virtual machines. HP StoreOnce utilizes innovative and powerful techniques to minimize the amount of information stored in the backup target, and this capability reduces the cost of storage in virtual data centers. Additionally, because HP StoreOnce is application-agnostic, it provides deduplication support for a wide array of mission-critical applications. Eliminate existing protection gaps with one-touch protection HP Data Protector software automates the protection of VMware environments via its one-touch backup policy configuration. VMware administrators can easily add, create, or change their virtual data centers to suit the needs of a dynamic enterprise environment. However, they often fail to communicate these changes to the backup administrator, leaving vsphere or vcloud Director environments unprotected. HP Data Protector addresses this issue: one click allows you to select the entire virtual environment and automatically identify and apply your backup policies to new virtual machines as they come online or failover (See Figure 2). In addition, Data Protector can be configured to automatically tune backup performance for vsphere and vcloud Director by determining the most efficient way to back up data. Data Protector provides a variety of one-touch options that allow the backup administrator to tune their backup configuration policy to suit individual performance and availability needs. This capability guarantees that when new virtual machines or vapps are created, they will be immediately added to a protection policy, which means no virtual server goes unprotected. Instant recovery through array-based snapshot protection HP Data Protector simplifies application protection in both physical and virtual environments through its integrated application extensions, Zero Downtime Backup, and Instant Recovery. Through a single, highly-efficient application agent, HP Data Protector provides down-to-the-second recovery for all mission critical applications, including Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL server, Microsoft SharePoint, Oracle, and SAP. Zero Downtime Backup allows you to take advantage of array-based snapshots to back up the virtual environment at any time with zero impact to the production environment. In VMware environments, all supported applications running in a VM can be protected as frequently as required, because all backups are processed by the storage array. HP Data Protector maintains snapshots on the disk array for use by HP Data Protector Instant Recovery, which allows you to stage application-consistent snapshots and recover data and applications in seconds automating the entire process to meet even the most demanding recovery time objectives. Figure 4: Integrated, policy-driven protection for vcloud Director environment Figure 3: Application Admin recovery of single items. Data Protector supports this for VMware, Microsoft SharePoint, and Microsoft Exchange 2010 HP Data Protector provides snapshot support for both HP and non- HP arrays, including the HP StorageWorks P2000, P4000, EVA, and P3000, HP 3PAR, EMC CLARiiON, EMC Symmetrix DMX, and Network Appliance. Granular Recovery Extension for VMware HP Data Protector Granular Recovery Extension (GRE) promotes selfservice recovery by empowering VMware administrators to recover single items without burdening the backup administrator. VMware administrators can manage their own recovery requests, eliminating the need for a backup administrator or helpdesk support person to assist in recovering single items (for example single files within a virtual disk file or VMDK file) in their vsphere environment. The GRE for VMware enables VMware administrators to recover single files, directories, and VMs directly from the vsphere console without requiring any access or knowledge about HP Data Protector (See Figure 3); the vsphere administrator merely needs rights granted to restore their VMs. Data Protector GRE capability helps improve enduser productivity by enabling IT to meet recovery SLAs in VMware environments without increasing cost. Enabling data protection in vcloud Director environments HP Data Protector delivers fully automated, policy-based protection for a spectrum of configurations within VMware vcloud Director environments, enabling service providers to offer flexible protection options within a single multitenant cloud environment (See Figure 4). With one-touch protection, you can eliminate existing protection gaps and reduce the risk of data loss exposure as business critical backup policies are automatically applied to new virtual machines and vapps within a highly dynamic virtual data center. This capability simplifies IT management responsibilities by eliminating the need for continuous monitoring and tracking. Additionally, organizations can maximize storage efficiency for VM backup by leveraging HP Data Protectors ability to deduplicate data anywhere at the application source, backup server, or target appliance and centrally manage the deduplicated data movement across the enterprise for disaster recovery. From a VMware administrator perspective, this integration provides the ability to browse the vcloud Director setup and configuration within the HP Data Protector management interface. This enables organizations that have a more complex environment, perhaps with multiple vcenter servers, to manage protection across management instances. 5
