Traci Rucker participated in the Emory Hospitals Scholar program during her last semester at GPC. Many nursing students must struggle to juggle work and school. Traci says the scholarship allowed her the freedom to concentrate her efforts on her studies and gain important handson experiences. Emory Hospitals Scholar Program Nurses are an integral part of health care, and to attract talented individuals to the profession, Emory Hospitals and Georgia Perimeter College have introduced an exciting multifaceted program called Emory Hospitals Scholar. Students enrolled in the Emory Hospitals Scholar program receive scholarships to study Nursing at GPC from Emory Hospitals in return for a commitment to work for Emory upon graduation from GPC with an RN degree. The students receive valuable hands-on experience through externships at Emory Hospitals while they attend GPC. Staff nurses at Emory Hospitals are assigned to the students to answer questions, share experiences and guide them through the program. The program is a standing offer to GPC Nursing students; they may apply anytime during their two years of study at GPC. "We wish that more students would take advantage of it," says Nurse Clinician Marti Wilson, who administers the program. "I think sometimes students may not know how valuable it is to concentrate time on studying and not have to work." Emory Hospitals include Emory University Hospital, Crawford Long Hospital and Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital. They are components of EMORY HEALTHCARE, the most comprehensive heath care system in Atlanta. As Chief Nursing Officer and Associate Administrator for Patient Services for Emory Hospitals, Alice Vautier says she is "very impressed with the enthusiasm and determination of the students" who are enrolled in the Emory Hospitals Scholar program. "The future is in good hands," she adds.

"As a new registered nurse, being an Emory Hospitals Scholar was a win-win situation for me," says Angelique Davenport. "Not only am I at a great teaching hospital that encourages and supports higher learning, they were willing to give financial funding to help execute this dream of mine." Emory Hospitals Scholar Program Criteria: GPC student who is in the first or second year in the Nursing Program with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and a score at the national average on the NET Test must be willing to work at one of the Emory Hospitals (Emory Hospital, Crawford Long Hospital, Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital) for two years immediately following graduation from the Nursing Program; must be dedicated to the Nursing profession as evidenced by a willingness to participate in the service initiatives of the scholars program. Scholarship amount: Tuition, book allowance and living expenses up to $3,000 annually, plus opportunity for employment as Nurse Extern. See Nursing Advisement Office for applications, deadlines, and more information about the screening process for this Scholars Program. Marti Wilson administers the Emory Hospitals Scholar program, interviewing students who apply, watching over their progress and helping them find the right employment after graduation. Helpful hints for filling out scholarship applications: Double check and adhere to deadlines (Give yourself plenty of time to gather materials). Fill out the application completely (Have you given all the information asked for?) Call and ask if you have questions (All scholarships have departments or contact people listed). Proofread (Have a friend or relative look over the application to see if they can spot mistakes). Be patient! (Remember that the application process takes time and it could be months before you are notified of any awards. Be aware that some organizations will not send any follow-up correspondence if you do not receive the award). If you are mailing your application, as a precaution, ask the Postmaster to stamp/meter your envelope in your presence so the postmark is legible.
