DETROIT PUBLIC SCHOOLS FREDERICK DOUGLASS ACADEMY FOR YOUNG MEN ATTENDANCE POLICY ALL students must report to school on time each day at 8:00 a.m. Students that wish to have breakfast must report by 7:45 a.m. Students that require a pass to class more than 5 minutes after the bell has rung will receive an A04- Truancy violation which will result in a short-term suspension of 1 day. Repeated offenders will receive a short-term suspension of 2.5 days with a request for a parental conference to determine the reason for the offense. Students that report to school after 10:00 a.m. must have verified documentation or the parent/ guardian must escort him in the building. Any students who arrive unescorted or without proper documentation will be suspended for truancy. (A04) Students who are in other than assigned location are considered skipping and this includes lunch periods. They must have a verifiable pass from a Frederick Douglass staff member. Students found without a pass will be sent to the Attendance Office for disciplinary action and could receive suspensions for truancy. Any student found off school grounds after reporting to school without a suspension form or early release form will also be subjected to a short term suspension. Parents that wish to pick up their son early from school must sign him out in the main office. Parents are encouraged to refrain from calling your son s cell phone to have him meet you in the main office. Students can only be released to the parent/guardian on file, unless the parent notifies us in advance that someone other than the documental guardian is to pick the student up. In cases of emergency, the party picking the student up will need documentation stating shy they are picking the student up. This is done to ensure the safety of the student, and all documentation will be verified prior to the student being released. Students that have been suspended must return with a parent or guardian. Failure to do so can result in the student being charged with trespassing on DETROIT PUBLIC SCHOOLS property. Students are PROHIBITED from using CELL PHONES DURING SCHOOL HOURS. FREDERICK DOUGLASS ACADEMY FOR YOUNG MEN STUDENT DRESS CODE CONTRACT The dress code is essential for students who are enrolled at Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men. The dress code ensures that young men at Douglass adhere to the same standard for dress and also ensures their safety and security while in school. Below is a list of items that are considered the official Douglass uniform and by signing this contract both the student and the Parent/Guardian agree to the following: The official Douglass School blazer and tie must be purchased from the official vendor for Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men. White Dress Shirt Must be a dress shirt with a pointed collar or an Oxford shirt with a button-down collar. Oxford shirts can be purchased from any department store. White Undershirt A plain white undershirt is required to be worn underneath the dress shirt. Any shirt with colors other than white or any shirt with letters or writing is NOT ACCEPTABLE and will be considered a violation of the dress code. Khaki Dress Pants May be purchased at a department store. CARGO PANTS, DICKIES and pants with a pocket on the lower thigh ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE and will be considered a violation of the uniform contract if worn. Black Dress Shoes Must be hard bottom dress shoes. Soles must not leave a black mark on the floor. NIKE BOOTS, FILA BOOTS, BLACK GYM SHOES, SANDALS OR CASUAL SHOES are not acceptable and will be considered a violation of the uniform contract if worn. Black Dress Belt May be purchased from a department store. No belts with large buckles over 2 inches, no belts with studs or designs on the buckle, no brown or fabric belts. No ROTC uniform belts can be worn with the official Douglass school uniform. School Club/Polo Shirts May be worn on Fridays only with the required Douglass pants, belt and dress shoes. Students must arrive at Douglass in the full uniform before entering the building. Students are not to leave their uniform jacket or any part of their uniform overnight in a school locker. Students will not be allowed to go to their locker upon arrival to school to retrieve their uniform. This activity will be considered a violation of the school uniform contract. Students are to wear their uniform in a proper manner. Shirts must be tucked into their pants and NO SAGGING under any circumstances is allowed. The uniform jacket, pants, tie and shirt must be clean, neat and pressed. Students are not to place uniform jackets in a book bag. Frederick Douglass Academy cannot be held accountable for uniforms that are lost/stolen or damaged. In the event that uniform items are lost/stolen or damaged must be repaired or replaced within a week of notification of a Douglass staff member.
Students must stay in full uniform until they leave the building. Students will not be allowed to dress into STREET CLOTHES when leaving the building at the end of their schedule or to travel to Vo-Tech classes. Students are not to write any gang symbols, words, signs or anything on the uniform tie or any article of the uniform. Students are not to wear any earrings, ear studs, nonprescription glasses, necklaces or jewelry of any kind. I UNDERSTAND THAT IF MY CHILD VIOLATES THE DRESS CODE, HE WILL BE REQUIRED TO: Write a one-page essay on the importance of dress code policies and procedures. This essay is due on the day of the infraction. Remain in school and serve detention/in-school suspension for that day Notify and provide his parents with a written copy of the violation After 3 violations the student will be suspended for one day and/or required to attend after-school detention. By signing this agreement we (parent/student) acknowledge that we have read and understand and agree to all of the terms indicated. We (parents/guardians) further agree to fulfill all of the above mentioned obligations, and for emergency circumstances that will not allow my child to wear the proper uniform to school to notify the school immediately by contacting the Dean of Student s office. We (parent/guardian) understand that if I or my child violates any of the terms stated above, I hereby authorize Frederick Douglass Academy to withdraw my child and my child will be referred to his neighborhood school. However, once students arrive to school they must turn off their cell phones before entering the building. Cell phones must be put away and not seen until dismissal from school at 3:15 p.m. Cell phones cannot be used for texting, making or receiving calls, use as a clock, calculator, internet or calendar nor listening to music. If a cell phone is SEEN or HEARD during the school day it will be confiscated. Parents/Guardians must pick up cell phones on Fridays only between 2:30 p.m. 3:30 p.m. in the Main Office. Any student refusing to give up their cell phone to a staff member will be suspended for two days for insubordination. Use of cell phone during school hours in a DPS Code of Conduct violation, ADS Use of Electronic Devices. If parents/guardians need to contact their child during school hours for emergency reasons, they are to call main office at (313) 596-3555 and the student will be located to take the call. MP3 Players, IPOD s, PSP s and other hand-held games or music devices with or without earplugs/headsets will not be permitted into the building. If so, it will be taken during security check. Students will receive the device on Friday of the week between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Parents please support the electronic device policy. It is imperative that students are not distracted during school hours. Their main focus should be on classroom lessons. The school is not responsible for stolen or lost cell phones and electronic devices.
