This document contains four General Surgery descriptions: North Central Thames Foundation School Individual Placement Description - Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Placement F1 General Surgery BTUH NHS Foundation Trust is a University Hospital affiliated to UCL, situated 30 miles to department the east of London on the North Bank of the Thames Estuary. Trust has an established reputation amongst the surgical community for the delivery of supervised training and is popular amongst the trainees. Basildon is the largest teaching hospital outside London for UCL students, consequently there are many opportunities to participate and deliver teaching to medical students. General Surgical department provides General Surgical on call services for the population of Basildon and Thurrock and Elective surgical services in Upper GI, Colorectal, Vascular, Breast, Endocrine, Urology and Paediatrics. General Surgical department is structured into three superfirms, each has two or more Consultants supported by at least one Specialty Doctor, two Specialist Registrars, 2 F2/Core trainees and F1s. re are a number of specialty nurses who also support the Multidisciplinary services. firms are Colorectal, Vascular and Upper GI with Breast. re is a separate Urology Firm with 3 Consultants, 2 Specialty Doctors, one SpR, one F2 and 4 F1s. type of F1s are attached to specific surgical firms and expected to take an active role in the day to work to day management of the firm. y are responsible for documenting progress in the expect and Clinical Record, organising investigations requested by the team and collating and learning communicating the results of those investigations. FY1s are expected to undertake simple opportunities ward based procedures with supervision as necessary, but are also encouraged to attend the operating theatre. Simulation centre training is available for a wide range of surgical skills from simple iv cannulation to laparoscopic and endoscopic simulation. Once competent in simulation these skills can be transferred to clinical practice. re are regular educational meetings within the department, in addition to the F1 programme lectures held on a Monday. This includes a monthly M&M and Surgical audit meeting, and weekly SpR led MRCS teaching on a Thursday morning. National courses are also held in the simulation centre, these include Basic Surgical Skills, Advanced Trauma Life Support, the Basildon Trauma Course and Core Laparoscopic skills.
