Sport and Exercise at Winchester The University of Winchester offers a portfolio of different programmes with sport and exercise as a focus. At undergraduate level there are six specific programmes: Sports Studies; Sport and Exercise Science; Strength, Conditioning and Fitness; Sports Business and Marketing; Sports Coaching; and Sports Psychology and Coaching*. All programmes are offered as Single Honours, however Sports Studies may also be studied alongside another subject as a Combined Honours programme. The differences between these programmes are explained in the pages that follow. All programmes are academic in nature, so there is no requirement for students to be gifted sportspeople to excel with us. Whatever route chosen, the critical understanding of sport and exercise is enhanced and students develop transferable skills. Sport and exercise at Winchester The programmes at the University of Winchester offer a unique learning experience. We provide high-quality teaching in a friendly learning environment and pride ourselves in the quality of support and guidance we offer students. Staff from the department are continually striving to find new and innovative ways to teach and support students. All tutors are interested both in sport and how to teach it. We firmly believe active learning and practical activities as well as directed independent learning to help our students to excel. We have a well-established reputation for educating students in a variety of academic disciplines related to the study of sport and exercise. Many of the staff are actively engaged in their own research. This research continually feeds back into our curriculum to provide areas for debate that are right at the cutting edge of the study of sport and exercise. Study options We believe students do best when they study what they are interested in and so we try and provide as much choice and flexibility for students as possible. Programme content The core aspects of our courses are based around academic disciplines, or course elements, we call strands. The strands included within our programmes are: Sport and Exercise Physiology Sport and Exercise Psychology Sport and Exercise Biomechanics Sport and Society Sports Development Sports Coaching Practice Sports Coaching Science Management, Marketing and Events Sports Marketing Research Each strand is made up of multiple modules which form the building blocks of each course. The way in which these strands relate to the courses is explained in the pages which follow. In addition, all courses are available as either full-time or part-time programmes of study. Learning and teaching Course delivery is reflected in a balance between lectures, seminars, workshops, practical and laboratory work and tutorials. The programmes also structure work in between sessions by setting tasks for students to prepare for following sessions. However, many sessions are made up of a mixture of teaching styles and learning activities. We also encourage students to work together and support each other in small groups. www.winchester.ac.uk *Subject to validation 1
Sports and Exercise at Winchester Assessment The majority of the work in the sport and exercise programmes is based on coursework. This coursework includes assignments such as essays, laboratory reports, presentations, practical skills assessments, role plays projects, group debates, case studies and the dissertation. Although there are some examinations, many of these are based around seen papers. Such diversity ensures students become competent at expressing themselves academically through a number of different types of assessment. Sporting opportunities Although the curriculum of the sports programmes at the University of Winchester does not necessitate active sports participation, or the requirement to be of a certain sporting standard, there are numerous sporting opportunities available to students. In terms of sports participation, students can join any of the sports clubs run by the Student Union. Students with more serious sports commitments are provided for at almost any level by sports clubs in the Winchester and Southampton area. Career opportunities Career opportunities for graduates are increasing in nature. Sports, leisure, tourism, management, education, fitness, research and health are all relevant graduate pathways for students completing an academic sports and exercise programme. Indeed, the multidisciplinary nature of sport and exercise produces well-rounded graduates who are able to pursue any of the above career pathways. However, Sport and Exercise Science graduates are particularly suited to careers in sport and exercise science support or performance sport support. Sports Business and Marketing graduates typically go on to work in sports management (for example, in sports marketing agencies) or sports development (for example, as a Sports Development Officer). The growing fields of sponsorship, hospitality and sport branding all offer exciting career prospects for Sports Business and Marketing graduates. Whilst graduates from Sports Coaching are suited to working as sports coaches, they are also able to pursue careers in sports development or as physical educators. Graduates from the Strength, Conditioning and Fitness programme predominantly target the sports performance and fitness/ personal training industries. Nonetheless, all of our courses are designed to provide students with a wide range of transferable skills including the ability to present, think and write in an informed and critical manner, as well as research, debate, work in a group and communicate effectively. These skills are valued in a range of careers, including those not directly related to sport. Many students also continue on to study for postgraduate qualifications to further enhance their employability. New innovative master s level programmes are constantly reviewed to ensure that they are at the forefront of contemporary study. BA (Hons) Sports Studies Programme content The Sports Studies programme provides students with a diverse range of approaches through which to study sport. All aspects of sport (ranging from recreational sport to elite competition) are studied from a variety of perspectives. Although this course is underpinned by the core academic disciplines of the sociology and history of sport and sport development, this is arguably the best course to get the most balanced overview of the significance of sport and exercise. Single Honours As a Single Honours degree programme, the course includes the following two mandatory strands, plus two optional strand from any of the other strands available within the Department, except the Sports Coaching Practice strand. Sport and Society strand (Mandatory) This strand seeks to develop a critical understanding of sport as a significant element of culture and society. Indeed, by bringing together the applied disciplines of sociology and history, this strand builds a knowledge base around understanding the place of sport in society over time. The common sense notion of sport as a discrete and separate part of society is challenged. It is advocated that by adopting a rigorous socio-cultural appreciation of sport, it is possible to develop a more accurate interpretation of what sport has represented in the past, what it represents today and what it might become in the future. Introduction to Sport, Culture and Society Sociology of Sport History of Sport Sport and the Media Sport and Contemporary Global Issues Research strand (Mandatory) This strand seeks to develop a familiarity with both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and apply these to various sporting and exercise contexts. The acquisition of such skills not only underpins learning from coursework in other strands, but is also a prerequisite for completing the dissertation. www.winchester.ac.uk 3
BA (Hons) Sports Studies The dissertation is designed to provide an opportunity to study an area students are most interested in. It represents the most independent piece of research that is carried out at undergraduate level. Students are supervised throughout this process but are expected to take increasing responsibility for the development of this piece of work. Introduction to Research Methods Research Methods in Sport and Exercise Dissertation Sport Development strand (Optional) The sports development modules encompass the principles of increasing participation in sport, reflecting on grass roots to elite level, volunteering and performance pathways. In addition, this strand examines National Governing Body of sport initiatives (including those from Sport England) and central and local government policy in various countries. However, in addition to their studies, students have the chance to be involved in voluntary work to enhance their employment prospects and deepen their understanding of sports development in practice. Foundations of Sports Development Key Resources in the Development of Sport Community Sports Development Elite Sports Development Sports Development: International Perspectives Combined Honours For those students who enrolled on a joint pathway, the University s Undergraduate Prospectus lists all the possible combinations of subjects which can be taken with Sports Studies. Many students are attracted to the Combined Honours programme because of the flexibility it affords them in selecting subject combinations, choosing strands and in having greater freedom in modular options within the subject. Combined Honours Sports Studies includes the same strands as in the Sports Studies Single Honours programme. In Year 1, students take the following modules: Introduction to Sport, Culture and Society AND Foundations of Sports Development OR Introduction to Research Methods However, students who would like to take a dissertation in Sports Studies will need to select the Research Strand. BA (Hons) Sports Business and Marketing Programme content The Sports Business and Marketing programme seeks to build on contemporary theory to develop the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the twenty-first century sports industry. The programme explores contemporary issues such as the growth and importance of sponsorship, the building of the sports brand, and a critical analysis of the use of social media. Single Honours As a Single Honours degree programme, the course includes a combination of the following strands. Sports Marketing strand Sport is big business and this strand reflects that position. The central themes are those that the contemporary observer could identify with, such as the multi-billion pound value of brands and how to build them; the use and growth of social media as part of a marketing implementation; and the continued growth and changing nature of sponsorship. Amateur sport is by no means neglected, and is considered further in conjunction with other strands. Sports Studies strand The starting point is how the complex interactions of sport within society set a context for all studies of sport. Sport and its relationship with the media would be an example of a specific topic within a broad socio-cultural exploration. Only by scrutinising a range of major issues impacting sport is it possible to appreciate what the world of sport can tell us about the past, the global importance sport has achieved today and what sport might become in the future. Management, Marketing and Events strand Management, Marketing and Events Strand delivered in collaboration with the Winchester Business School, this strand focuses on a range of specific factors including management and leadership, sports and mega events, relationship marketing, consumer behaviour, strategic marketing, digital marketing and financial management. The addition of this strand strengthens the breadth and flexibility for learning. The modules provide a framework that the specific sports business and marketing modules add depth, context and clarity to. Within this strand students are able to select modules that match their personal interests or ambitions. Academic understanding is reinforced with sporting case examples to enrich student engagement. The interweaving of these modules is expected to widen the employability options within business overall, as well as within sport. Research Methods strand The Research strand seeks to develop a familiarity with both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and apply these to various sport and exercise contexts. Some of the research methods strand is delivered in collaboration with the Winchester Business School. Students learn how to design a research project and consider the sequences of the research process - from idea and proposal to analysis and dissemination. The focus begins with skills for study and skills for employment - employability underlines all other values. It moves to a marketing research basis to reflect the professional nature of the Dissertation. www.winchester.ac.uk 5

BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching Programme content Central to the Sports Coaching degree course is the belief that coaching theory and knowledge only becomes relevant when applied in practice. In fact, it is out on the playing field, the track and/or the sports hall that we really find out what works, and the best coaches are those who are able to reflect critically on their own practice, and look for ways to enrich their knowledge. Consequently there is a heavy emphasis within this programme on students being coaches, and using theoretical knowledge to reflect on their own coaching practice. This is supported by a number of extra-curricular development opportunities, made available to our coaching students in the course of their time with us. These vary from traditional SportCoachUK workshops, to more cutting edge performance and video analysis courses that will enrich the student experience whilst at the university. In terms of coaching theory, the programme is uniquely focused on the disciplines of sports coaching, sports development and research methods. Students are provided with the knowledge base to critically engage with contemporary research related to sports coaching and sports development and then test this research in practical settings. Sports Coaching is not offered in the Combined Honours Programme. Single Honours As a Single Honours degree programme, the course includes a combination of the following strands. Sports Coaching Practice strand The sports coaching strand enables students to apply theory to a variety of practical coaching situations. The modules within this strand have been designed to introduce generic coaching principles, with students being given the opportunity to demonstrate these in their own areas of interest from team to individual sports. The course takes the view that coach education and development is an important element of improving sports performance at all levels. Therefore we aim to enable students to understand the importance of: communication from coach to athlete, putting theoretical principles into practice, and examining coaching from learning, teaching and analysis perspectives. In addition, students are involved in coaching consultancy work in the local sporting community to enhance their employment prospects and deepen their understanding of sports coaching in practice. There are opportunities to gain coaching qualifications in tandem with these modules. Foundations of Sports Coaching Community Coaching Practice Critical Issues in Sports Coaching Sports Development strand The modules within the sports development strand aim to connect the world of coaching to wider community and performance development structures. The aim here is to investigate how politics and policy are the catalysts of specific development and coaching initiatives. The specific issues discussed are focused around how inequality affects both the coaching profession and sports participation in general; how sport is resourced; and how sport is used both to develop local communities and, for its own sake, in performance and elite models. www.winchester.ac.uk 7
BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching Foundations of Sports Development Key Resources in the Development of Sport Community Sports Development Elite Sports Development Sports Development: International Perspectives Sports Coaching Science strand This strand of modules is based around the application of aspects of sports science to the world of sports coaching where this knowledge requires a unique style of interpretation and communication. Certain aspects of applied sports biomechanics (the analysis of movement), physiology (principles of training) and psychology (where the roles of sports psychologists and coaches collide ) are covered in this strand to provide students with a science toolkit for sports coaching. Introduction to the Science of Coaching Coaching Science Applied Coaching Science Research Methods strand This strand seeks to develop a familiarity with both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and apply these to various sporting contexts. The acquisition of such skills not only underpin learning from coursework in other strands, but is also a prerequisite for completion of the dissertation. The use of technology in a performance setting, such as video match analysis, is also an essential element of the strand. In particular, this strand provides a unique opportunity for students to become accredited performance analysts in conjunction with Dartfish analysis technologies. The dissertation is designed to provide an opportunity to study an area which students are most interested in. Sport has always been a big part of my life but when I began to coach I became even more interested in the science behind it. Winchester impressed me because it has great facilities the Biomechanics Lab was one of the main reasons I came here. The lecturers approach to their students and the amount of contact time you get with them means they get to know you and it opens the door to some interesting opportunities outside of your studies. This summer I worked with two of my lecturers on a project as part of the Winchester Research Apprenticeship Programme. In terms of the future, I hope to go into a Masters focusing on either Biomechanical Product Design or Biomechanical Technique and I think that Winchester has set me up well to carry into these areas of study. - Conor Power, graduated 2012 16 www.winchester.ac.uk
