AUGUSTA ATLA visual artist, lives and works in Paris, FR www.augustaatla.com info@augustaatla.com FERTILITY, ANCIENT ARCHETYPES Silkscreen print on paper 2014

AUGUSTA ATLA works visually in all mediums of art. The artworks explore the emotional life of humanity, our representations and traditions of psychology, our existential conditions, our collective taboos and our inborn direction for survival, love, joy and pleasure. Augusta Atla believes that art can expose our deepest and most natural sense of satisfaction, awe, compassion, appetite and the desire to live. The artworks grow from a wish to inspire to further intimacy between people, to visually give a language to our rich and complex hearts, that is, the artworks deal with emotions in order to further an awareness of the inner life, on both sexes and all sexualities, the inter-relationships of humanity and individual self-introspection. The artworks thrive on a belief that art can refresh the body senses through the viewer s perception. The artworks are also developed through an continual interest in the representation of the female figure, femininity and sensitivity of the body, as a cultural idea, as well as contemporary gender issues, and the psychology of sexualities. Because of the patriarchic history of Fine Art there are in Western culture very few visual examples of a free sense of femininity (regardless of gender and sexuality). Because Augusta is a female artist, she finds it obvious, evident and necessary to take a step further inventing imagery on femininity than that of the patriarchy in Western art history. Women and the artist herself are the subjects of Augusta s art, and opposed to previous ideas in Western art history, she wants the model to be alive and to debate her own identity construction, rather than being controlled, limited or defined (by the male heterosexual artist). Augusta intends to give life to a new imagery of the female body without rejecting or denying all the layers of trauma and oppression in history. She does not want to produce another ideal of women, nor does she want to reject gender altogether theoretically. The repressive pain of history and heterosexual social awareness is combined with a playfulness of who we are and what we are made of. And furthermore femininity is not understood as being related to a particular gender which is believed to be another cultural construction. Visually Augusta tries to invent a freer and more playful understanding of the body in images. That is, more complex psychological imagery with deeper emotions than that of pop culture, of art history, or of religious imagery. Her fundamental point of view of art is that it is a free platform of speech art promotes a free and conscious expression of life. Her artwork is a psychological study fuelled by a playfulness of what is identity and composed visually through a belief that it is possible to refresh our perception. Art can study our cultural origins while refreshing us emotionally, mentally and wake our perception of being a body. This refreshment may show us a way to return our natural state of freedom.
