The program includes classroom training in basic health care relationships, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, body mechanics and patient mobility, vital signs, weights and measures, nutrition, patient observation and reporting, life-death continuum, CPR, and job seeking skills. Emphasis is also placed on knowledge of community health resources and services and job survival skills. This course allows the student to spend approximately 18 hours in each: classroom, community classroom, and/or cooperative vocational education methodology. Student Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Exhibit knowledge of the health care industry, be able to identify skills necessary to enter specific health careers, as well as education/training to advance to their chosen fields. 2. Understand the concepts of ethics and confidentiality as well as the legal meaning of negligence and malpractice within the health field. 4. The training plans are those provided in the Curriculum Guide for Health Services/Occupations. When students become employed at their individual community classroom job sites, they may continue in the course under the methodology known as Cooperative Vocational Education (CVE). Each area of training will have specific theory, skills and attitudes to be further developed. These units are topics will be developed with the aid of health care professionals within the occupation and involve the use of appropriate educational materials and resources. Methods, Strategies and Techniques A variety of strategies and techniques are used to instruct the students, including: cooperative learning, current textbooks, technology and reference materials, demonstrations, field trips, group instruction, and guest speakers. Assessment of Student Performance Assessment of student performance will include: classroom participation, completion of required assignments, a complete portfolio, individual and group projects, industry related tests, and work habits (attendance, punctuality, professional attitude, and being a member of a team). ROP Certificate Requirements To earn a Certificate of Proficiency for this course, students must accomplish the following: completion of competencies at a minimum performance of 7%, maintain an 85% or higher attendance rate, and demonstrate positive work ethics in class. Assessed Job Market Needs According to the Employment Development Department, the top industries in Butte County, in the order of percentage of jobs are: Services (25%), Retail Trade (22%), and Government (21%). The estimated number of hires by industry in Butte County are Retail Trade (33%), Services (31%), Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (3%), and Public Administration (3%). Thirty seven percent of the hires will be in the service industry for which this class will prepare students with computer skills. Generally, the Department of Labor predicts that the overall employment of Nursing Aides, Orderlies, Attendants, and Medical Assistants will have faster than average employment growth through the year 21. Specifically, Medical Assistants will see an average growth in annual job openings of 4,48 (51%) new jobs.
