Energy Management Transparency creates efficiency

Energy consumption under control? Exploit your building s potential! There are many different types of buildings: residential, office and industrial buildings or hospitals and sports facilities. They all have one thing in common: They consume energy. Buildings are among the largest consumers of energy. Therefore, they also have high energy savings potential. If you want to make the most of these potential savings, you need to know where and how energy is consumed. Detailed information on consumption levels in buildings help to save energy and protect the environment. Large buildings and properties usually have a variety of different users and uses, making it difficult to keep track. The Energy Management software provides the necessary information and arranges it in a clear and structured manner. Taking a hospital as an example we can see how varied the energy consumption is in a large building and how Energy Management helps make this complex structure more transparent and therefore efficient. The operator himself is also the largest consumer. The staff canteen is leased to a catering company, while other rooms are rented out to independent therapists. A nursing home belonging to the hospital is situated at the other end of town. Let alone the large variety of uses, makes a detailed recording of energy consumption data a must. Making the rounds with the janitor The janitor is always making his rounds in his property. He knows all the buildings, above all, he knows where to find the energy and water meters for the different areas. He also knows which meters are not yet automated Detailed information This is exactly the information Energy Management software from Kieback&Peter provides. and hence not connected to the building management system. Up until now, he had to read the meters on a regular basis, write down the consumption levels, and manually enter them into the computer system at his office afterwards. Today, he enters the data directly on the spot with his PDA (Pocket PC) which automatically forwards the data to an IT network and hence to the energy management server, for example as soon as a W-LAN access point is within reach. Continuous energy management: Registration and evaluation of the meter values by the Energy Management software play an important role for the analysis of the current status and success monitoring. Data exchange opportunities The Energy Management software is a software package for recording, saving, analyzing and monitoring the energy and media consumption of a property. The program runs as stand-alone software on a Windows PC. There are different ways to forward the consumption and meter data to the Energy Management software: From automation stations and building management systems through standard OPC interfaces (the OPC interface enables the integration of meter and consumption data among devices from different manufacturers). From the Neutrino-GLT building management system via the ODBC interface From a PDA or smartphone From MS Excel files From dataloggers (e. g. the Qundis Q AMR wireless system) By manual entry Thanks to a logical structure, access to the desired data within the Energy Management software is simple. This structure reflects the real-life distribution of properties so that the user can always get an overview of what has been consumed, when and where. 3

Analysis and evaluation Always keeping track At a glance Extensive functionality Personalized reports Easy assignment of consumption points The technical manager keeps track of things The hospital s technical manager uses the extensive energy management features to analyze and evaluate the consumption data. He clearly sees how much energy is consumed in each part of the building and can therefore detect unusually high levels of consumption, hence potential saving opportunities, and can thus intervene to control unusual high consumption and reveal potential savings. He can also adapt the program structure to changed conditions, e. g. to add or remove new meters or tenants. To do this, he doesn t even have to leave his desk. Via RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) he can access the server on which the program is installed (e. g. in the computer lab) from his computer. The technical manager regularly creates energy and cost reports for the entire property on the basis of the calculated consumption levels, and these are then delivered to the general management. He also needs to forward the consumption data for the rented units to the accounting division to be integrated in the utilities billing process on a monthly basis. Thanks to the structured display of the individual units and the assigned consumption data in the program package, this can be done quickly and easily. Templates can be applied with the reporting function, and individualized reports can be created and sent automatically. 4

Energy management enables different ways of evaluating and displaying the generated data: Evaluation: This element supports ad hoc evaluations. The user quickly and easily receives valuable information on consumption levels, costs and emissions. Different chart types, depending on the data format (bar graph, pie chart or gauge) Variable display modes (2D, 3D, stacked, etc.) Overview of reference periods Dynamic, click-based operation Copy features for graphics and data for further processing Benchmarking Energy management offers the possibility of comparing energy consumption of your own buildings to buildings with similar use, thereby objectively comparing and measuring one s own energy consumption. The software uses so-called comparative characteristics for benchmarking, e. g. for electricity and heating/hot water. The consumption parameters for your own building are calculated by the Energy Management program. These consumption parameters are compared to the corresponding comparative para meters. The comparison parameters are stored in the Energy Management program. In this way you can see at a glance if your own buildings consume comparatively more or less energy. Emissions at a glance The software package also provides information on environmental pollution created by the operation of a building. Based on the data collected in the Energy Management program, the nature and extent of the resulting emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter can be calculated and clearly displayed graphically. Analysis The significance of the analyses depends on the data quality. In cases where the analyses do not lead to the expected result, implausible measurement and meter values can be the cause. The analysis function is a valuable tool for verification of data correctness. Line diagrams with special visualization features make the analysis clear and efficient. Comparison parameters An objective comparison of energy consumption in buildings can only be made if they are of the same type and usage. Therefore, there are classification systems for different building types, according to the department of urban planning and housing. Comparison parameters are statistically acquired results that meet the statements about the energy consumption of these types of buildings. These comparison parameters are available to the user for the benchmarking of their own building. But its own comparison parameters can also be stored in the system. 5

Energy Management from Kieback&Peter Different people need different data The tasks for energy management run through an entire property. The example of a hospital shows where and how energy management from Kieback&Peter records data, processes it and makes it available for analysis and billing. 1 The janitor The janitor is on the move through out the entire building and takes the meter readings for the energy and quantity meters that are not yet automated. By means of a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), he sends the collected data to the corporate network and thus also to the energy management server (1.1). A janitor on site in a nursing home belonging to the hospital takes the meter readings manually on site and enters them into an Excel meter readings form. The data is transmitted via the company network through the MS Excel interface to the energy management system and can be further processed there (1.2). 2 The technical manager The data converges on the technical manager from the property s individual meters. He uses the energy management features for evaluating and analyzing consumption data and thereby opens up further potential savings. With the Energy Management software package he creates energy reports and cost reports for the management and heads of the individual departments at regular intervals (2.1). The data from the leased areas of the hospital (for example, the cafeteria) also run through him (2.2). He sends these to the accounting department for invoicing monthly. 3 Department head/ cost center manager The department heads receive regular reports on the usage figures in their area. The report will be sent to them automatically from energy management, or they can also view and download the reports themselves on the energy management s web front end. It ensures, however, that each department head receives or can retrieve only information about the area for which they are responsible. 4 The management The technical director compiles a quarterly report on the energy consumption for the management. Unlike the reports for the department manager, this report contains information on the entire property. This report is not created automa tically, but rather is compiled by the technical director individually. For this he transmits graphics and tables directly from energy management into an MS Office document. The software package allows for easy transfer of data and graphs in MS Office by means of copying & pasting. 6

Report function Customized solutions and information Automated report distribution: individualized reports for each cost center With the report function, the individual department heads receive a consumption report at regular intervals. Alternatively, the department heads can inde pendently view the report in the web frontend and download it to their PC. Each department head only has access to information from the units for which he/she is responsible. The program provides all func - tions for a professional reporting process from the report designer to the automated distribution of the finished reports. Create and send automatically A variety of reports for frequently needed evaluation types is already included in the Energy Management software package. With the report design feature, experienced users can design and modify reports according to their personal requirements. Moreover, energy management supports the automatic creation of reports based on schedules, their distribution by email to defined recipients, or their archiving in networks. Hence, the people responsible for the cost centers in our example can receive information on their respective consumption data regularly and automatically. The reports can be printed and exported in various file formats. Possible export formats include: XML files with report data, CSV, PDF, MHTML (Web archive), Excel, Word, and graphics. 10

Reports Information at a glance The Energy Management software offers different ways to evaluate and display obtained consumption and measurement data. Therefore a number of frequently used report layouts are included with the installation of the system. The finished layouts can be customized for corporate identity with your own logo, header and footer. The user can choose between different chart types and display modes. The creation of lists for measuring meters concerning utility billing for rented premises is also possible. Trends in energy use can also be viewed at a glance, for example with load profiles defined for individual time periods. A direct comparison of different periods/building parts can be represented graphically as well. 11

Tenant model Tailor-made information The hospital management also uses the data from the energy management system for billing the utility costs for external users. This is done via the tenant model. Customized evaluation The software package s tenant model supports the creation of a tenant-specific consumption evaluation, independent of the physical meter structure. The model consists of two components: tenant data management, and tenancy administration. In tenant adata management, reference data such as name and address are saved and administered. In tenancy administration, the rental properties (buildings, building parts or individual rooms), as well as tenants assigned to them and the respective rental period are recorded. Thus, the tenant model supports an accurate, personalized consumption map for each tenant, even in cases where the tenant has rented different objects within the property during different periods. Microsoft Excel interface Simple transmission Integration of large (historical) databases via MS Excel MS Excel interface: seamless integration of external data The MS Excel interface is an extension (plug in) for the MS Excel program. Using this extension, data from Excel files can be quickly forwarded to the Energy Management software for further processing. Automatic transmission This is particularly interesting for remote parts of a property, e.g. the external nursing home in the case of our hospital example. The local janitor can read the meters and enter the meter information manually in a given meter reading form (MS Excel file). If the MS Excel extension (plug in) for the energy management system is installed on his PC, the data sets are directly transmitted from Excel to the energy management system via the company network. 13
