Area Pioneers Local Area History and the Spence Family Jerry s great-great-grandfather, Isaac Spence, came to the Choctawhatchee Bay area in the 1850 s. He began farming in the Alaqua Creek area of Walton County near Freeport Florida. Jerry s great-grandfather Sylvester S. Spence started a sawmill in the late 1800 s on Boggy Bayou where Lions Park in Niceville, FL is now. By the turn of the century their sawmill at the mouth of Turkey Creek was cutting 50,000 board feet per day. As one of the largest sawmills in North Florida the timber was used to build railroads from east to west across the United States. Sylvester Spence owned much of what is now Okaloosa County which he purchased from the Federal Government for 25 cents per acre. After cutting the timber he gave the land back rather than continue to pay taxes. Walter S. Spence was Jerry s grandfather who worked in the family sawmill business. One of his earliest jobs as a woods-rider was to supervise turpentine operation from horseback. In the early 1930 s he started a dairy in the area where the Climatic hanger is now on Eglin Air Force Base. In 1932 Walter S. began a fish company on Boggy Bayou and started building commercial fishing boats in Valparaiso in the early 40 s. In the mid 40 s he and his brother began Gulf Coast Building Supply Company and a millworks in Valparaiso. He served for twenty-eight years as one of Okaloosa County s earliest commissioners. Jerry s father, Walter Francis Spence, was born in the Village of Bolton, earned an engineering degree from Tulane University, and began working with the United States Air Force at Eglin in the 50 s. As President of the Chamber of Commerce, he came up with the idea for the Boggy Bayou Mullet Festival in Niceville and started working towards building the Mid-Bay Bridge in 1977. He formed Spence Brothers Properties to develop and build commercial property in the area. Walter Francis is still active in the company, the Mid-Bay Bridge Authority and as a consultant in the local defense industry.

Price Lockheed-Martin Corporate Field Office Mr. Spence built a house for my husband and myself, the workmanship was superior and we were more than satisfied. Mr. Spence has exhibited a high level of integrity and upheld that standard with all the subcontractors as well. His attention to detail is scrupulous and consistent. We highly recommend Mr. Spence for any upcoming projects you may be considering him for. Faith Gibson, Niceville, Florida It is a personal pleasure to provide this letter of recommendation for Mr. Jerry Spence and Spence Brothers Construction. Spence Brothers Construction recently completed construction on our new home. Mr. Spence was the consummate professional. He devoted a significant amount of time, before construction, with my wife and I developing the requirements for our new house. The house was completed a full thirty days early, and we have proudly shown Mr. Spence s work to all of our friends and associates. Robert O. Hoffman Jr., Niceville, Florida Spence Brothers Construction has been doing business with Peoples National Bank since 1994. During this time we have extended credit up to a medium six-figure amount, which has been handled in a very satisfactory manner. This company maintains a deposit account, which has never been overdrawn and carries a high five-figure balance. We can also recommend the quality of their work and the professional manner in which they conduct their business. Eugene Moore, Executive Vice-President Peoples National Bank, Niceville, Florida My wife and I talked to several builders and looked at various homes that were constructed by local builders. We selected Jerry because of his professionalism and that he seemed to take a very personal interest in the homes he was building. During and after the construction of our home, Jerry and his crew followed up and came back to our home to insure that we were satisfied and had no complaints. I would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Jerry Spence for home construction and believe that he is an excellent builder an businessman. Stanley R. Chandler, Niceville, Florida
