3 Transportation will also be provided between the Moscow Hotel (lieu of the Conference) and the Palace (lieu of the opening of the Conference). VISA REQUIREMENTS Participants who are required to have entry visas should contact the nearest Russian Consulate or Embassy. A copy of the official invitation from the United Nations should accompany visa applications and other relevant information required for the issue of the visa. Visa applications should be submitted no later than two weeks prior to the date of departure. The Government of the Russian Federation will facilitate the issuance of visas free of charge. If participants encounter problems obtaining visa they may contact Mr. S. Admission to the Conference premises will require the presentation of Conference badges. For security reasons, Conference badges must be worn at all times while on the Conference premises, this applies particularly to the opening ceremony. SOCIAL AND CULTURAL PROGRAMME Visit to the Mariinskiy Opera and Ballet Theatre (tickets have to be booked at the Secretariat at the expense of the participants). Visit to the Hermitage, the Russian Museum, or the Petrodvoretz - a town of fountains, the favorite summer residence of Peter the Great - the founder of St.-Petersburg, or a boat trip along the Neva River and channels will be organized at the end of the first working day of the Conference upon special requests and at the expense of the participants. Official reception for all the participants on behalf of the Russian Government will follow the official closing ceremony at the Moscow Hotel on 6 June. WEATHER June is the white nights glorious season with 24 hours daylight (some people might have temporary sleeplessness). The weather records fluctuate from +2 to +32C, however, usually temperature ranges from+18 to +22 C degrees without rain. Please contact the hotel administrator to inquire on the rates of international calls made from the Hotel rooms. MONEY/BANKING Official Russian currency is Rouble (1 Rouble = 100 copeikas). Current official rate of exchange is US$ 1 for 28 Roubles 85 kopeks. It is illegal to exchange foreign currencies with private persons or at places other than banking agencies. A banking agency operating at the Moscow Hotel handles all exchange operations (mostly in US dollars, Russian roubles and German marks) as well as credit card transactions. You may also cash travelers cheques (at a surcharge of 2,5 per cent). LOCAL TRANSPORTATION The city subway (metro) is an inexpensive, safe and convenient mode of transportation in St. Petersburg. It operates daily between 5:30 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. The nearest Metro station to the Moscow Hotel is "Ploschad Alexandra Nevskogo (Alexander Nevskiy Square), and is located in 5 min walk. Taxis serve the airport and the railway station (Tel.:068) Transportation by bus will be organized for the participants from the hotel to/from the Prince Vladimir Palace, Mariinski Opera and Ballet Theatre.
