POOT FAMILY LINEAGE -- CONCISE PUBLIC VERSION INTRODUCTION (no dates given for living persons) by William Allison (e-mail: bill_allison@prodigy.net) This is a presentation of 14 generations of Poots in the direct family lineage of William F. Poat. It needs some more work. There are a few words that still need translating to English and a few names that will benefit from further research. I have included the data showing the relationship of the famous poet H. K. Poot, but have omitted other early side branches to make this version concise. The names of direct ancestors are highlighted with bold text. The birth dates of living persons are not included in this public version for security reasons. As I continue working on this I will release a family version with birth dates and as many currently living descendents as possible. I am working on some updated graphical family trees, because the old format was overwhelmed by too many generations of relations. None of the previously published Poot genealogies include Jan Willem Poot or his descendants. I suspect he was overlooked because he moved away from the family and eventually went to America. My personal research of numerous archives in the Netherlands for many regions and cities revealed our family lineage back to Pieter Jacobszn Poot (1744-1805), Abraham Smits (1735-1816), and others born in the early 1700's. The overlapping of consistent data between my research and the published genealogies enabled me to use their data for earlier generations of Poots. Most of the early information prior to 1740 is from genealogies published on the internet at: www.jrpoot.eu (previously www.poot.nu ) This is a massive collection of several thousands of records of Poots from the 1500's to the 1900's. The records in this collection are from the combined efforts of a family genealogist, Rob Poot, and the submissions of other Poot researchers. It is the most comprehensive collection in existence. He is merging some of my data, and the website now includes the birth of Jan Willem Poot. This web site has assigned reference numbers to each individual. I have included this number in square brackets after each name. I do not know the Dutch language yet all of the information was originally in Dutch. This was a problem; not only were many words not in translation books, some were not even in Dutch dictionaries. There are three reasons for this. Dutch has provincial dialects. Some words were archaic. Dutch spelling was not standardized. Recently, the Dutch Ministry of Education issued a "new spelling list" for adults and children to use in an effort to standardize spelling. I translated and merged as much information as I could from different sources. Unfortunately, I had to omit indecipherable or confusing data. I have not finished all of the translating and some of my wording appears awkward or is incomplete. Poot Family Lineage - Introduction

One problem is determining the meaning of the word "bouwman", which is listed as the occupation of many generations of Poot ancestors. Dictionaries generally indicate that "bouwman" means a builder, construction-man, or architect. However, the surname Bouwman is said to be derived from the occupation of farmer. Historical records support both meanings. I found that H.K. Poot, the poet, is usually said to have started as a farmer and is listed as both "bouwman" and a "boer" (farmer) in Dutch sources. Several old legal records of Poots who were "bouwman" show the Poots owned land, owned farm animals, made contracts to build structures, and leased land to tenant farmers. Another problem comes from the many spelling variations used for people's names. This often causes important records to be overlooked when searching old records without trying many variations in the names. Sometimes you cannot be certain a record is for the correct person if there are no other details to confirm who it is. If a listing does not show the spouse or parents, you may be uncertain if records with spelling variations represent the same person. Nearly all of the places named are located in the center of the province of Zuid-Holland (South Holland) in an area smaller than the city of Los Angeles. This area is sometimes called Westland or Delfland, but could be nicknamed Pootland, since most Poots have remained in this area for hundreds of years. The approximate boundaries are Delft in the northwest, Zoetermeer in the north, Gouda in the northeast, Vlaardingen in the southwest, and Rotterdam in the southeast. You should assume all Dutch locations in the genealogy below are in the province of Zuid Holland (ZH) unless stated otherwise. The dates are given in a Day-Month-Year format. It may seem awkward to some readers, but is consistent with international usage. GENERATION I I. Pieter Pieterszn Poot [424]. He was recorded as a bouwman in Kethel in 1555. His wife is unknown. 1. Pieter Pieterszn [146], son born ca 1550 2. Martigen Pieterdr. daughter GENERATION II II. Pieter Pieterszn Poot [146]. Son of Pieter Pieterszn Poot [424], born ca 1550, died before 24 July 1580. Was a bouwman in the Vlaardinger-ambacht district around Kethel. Married ca 1576 to Lijsbeth Huybrechtsdr. She was born ca 1555 in Kethel and died in Kethel in May 1622. After Pieter's death, his 3 year old son inherited 650 guilders, and daughter 200 guilders. Then she married Huibrecht Vincentsz van Adrichem 24 July 1580 who then died before 23 April 1582. From him she inherited the house and courtyard and 258 guilders. They had a son, Huibrecht Huibrechtsz. At that time her brother-in-law Jan Vincentsz was named guardian. She had a brief marriage to Cornelis Herperts. Then by 1590 was married to Dirk Peurman. The short lives of the men may be the result of the intense warfare with Spain and the Pope. He served as alderman or magistrate in Spaland in 1613, 1615-17, 1626, 1633-34, 1639-40. He married in Vlaardinen ca 1602 to Martijntgen Cornelisdr Verhouck [137]. She was born ca 1580 in Vlaardinger Woud in the Vlaardinger-ambacht district. She died in Spaland 7 May 1653. She was daughter of Cornelis Cornelisz Verhouck and Diewertje Cornelisdr. 1. Poot and Hubert Kornelisz Poot. Bouwman (in Abswoude), farmer, famous poet, tobacconist. Christened 23 Jan 1689 in Schipluiden, died 31 Dec 1733 in Delft age 44. Titled a "Welgeboren" or wellborn man of Delftland 1723-1726. Son of Cornelis Huibrechtszn Poot [132] and Trijntje Walingsdr Groenheijde. Until 1723 Poot was a farmer. Encouraged through the success of his poetry book "Mengelgedichten", whose 1716 edition sold out, and was reprinted in 1718, he established himself in Delft. One year later he returned to his village. At the late age of 43 he married Neltje (age 30) in 1732. They moved to Delft where he opened a tobacco shop. He died there one year later from kidney disease. Huibrecht was betrothed 26 April 1732 in Delft to Neltje 't Hart. They had a church wedding 11 May 1732 at `s Gravenzande, ZH. Neeltje was christened 24 July 1701 at `s Gravenzande, and she died 25 April 1772 at `s Gravenzande at 70-years of age. Neltje was a daughter of Jacob `T Hart and Maria de Bije. 1. Worked as a policeman. Rescued people at the Eastland boat disaster in July 1915, and worked during race riots of 1919. After the riots he changed jobs and worked as a floor salesman. He was tall, large, overweight and loved to eat and drink. He died of a heart attack while leaving the office building where a doctor had just pronounced him to be in fine health. Married to Jennie Dolfing 26 Aug 1904 in Chicago. Jennie was born Oct 1884 in Illinois of Dutch parents Albert and Altine Dolfing. 1. John Albert Poot (Johnny Floyd? Poat). Born in late 1905 in Chicago, Illinois. Began professional singing career at age six. (Orpheum circuit?) Later changed spelling of name to Poat. Drove a delivery truck for a bakery in 1930 census. Married in 1926 to Eleanor. She was born ca 1904 in Illinois of Norwegian parents. (Was Peggy her nickname or a 2nd wife?) Moved to Riverside California in 1930s. Drove Pierce Arrow luxury car in parades. May have become an alcoholic and died in 1940-1950 time period. Needs further research. GENERATION XII

GENERATION XIII XIII.3.1. Lawrence (Larry) Frederick Poat. Born 16 June 1899 in Pella, Iowa. Served in Navy in WWI, ship sunk, spent time in hospital, then reentered war service. Circa 1920 married Edna M., probably in Illinois. She was born in New York, 1897 and died 16 May 1959. In 1930 they lived at Mount Vernon, Knox Co., Ohio where he worked as automobile repairman. He died Apr 1970 in Ohio. Buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Ashland Co., Iowa. Edna, his first wife, was re-interred next to his grave Apr 1970. 1. Faith - daughter born circa 1921-2 in Illinois His second marriage was to Ethel L. Baughman. She was born on 7 Apr 1901 and died in Feb 1985. There were no children from his second marriage. XIII.3.3. Angela (Ange) Louise Poat. Married William Sunter. Later they divorced. 1. William (Billy) Sunter Jr. Second marriage to Irvin (Irv) Featherstone. (One of twin boys named by their Russian doctor Ivan and Irvin. His twin brother died.) He was born 10 Feb 1902 and died August 1979 in Arkansaw. He was financial controller of Chrysler Automotive Corporation, but retired after injured in a car accident. He then started a business doing financial investment analysis for banks and investment funds. No children from this marriage. XIII.3.4. Mildred (Mid) Pearl Poat. Born 15 Nov. 1910, Millersburg, Holmes Co., Ohio. Died in Riverside, California, Jan 22, 2004. Married Lloyd Laverne Thorson. He was born in South Dakota 15 Dec 1906 and died in Riverside, California on 7 Dec 1990. He owned orange groves, turkey ranches, shares in a shopping mall and other land in Riverside, California. He was Captain with the San Bernardino Police Depatment, juvenile division. He helped organize the National Association of Credit Unions and traveled all over the U.S. to promote it. 1.
