APPLICATION OF CLOUD COMPUTING IN EDUCATION Achmad Benny Mutiara amutiara@staff.gunadarma.ac.id

OUTLINE: WHAT IS CLOUD COMPUTING?? HISTORY WHY CLOUD COMPUTING??? PROPERTIES OF CLOUD COMPUTING TYPES OF CLOUD COMPUTING. SERVICES PROVIDED BY CLOUD COMPUTING PROS & CONS 1

CLOUD COMPUTING It is a paradigm in which information is permanently stored in servers on the internet and cached temporarily on clients that include desktops, table computers, notebooks, wall computers, handhelds entertainment centers etc. It puts customers information and or applications in a virtual cloud that can be accessed through the web. Users do not have or need knowledge, control, ownership in the computer infrastructure 2

Cloud computing is simply a buzzword used to repackage grid computing and utility computing, both of which have existed for decades. 3

Evolution from Grid to Cloud Computing 4

Why cloud computing..??? Traditional Software Vs Cloud computing 5

6

Public Cloud: The services are delivered to the client via the Internet from a third party service provider. Example: Amazon 7

Private Cloud: These services are managed and provided within the organization. There are less restriction on network bandwidth, fewer security exposures and other legal requirements compared to the public Cloud. Example: HP Data Centers 8

It is a combination of services provided by the Private and public cloud Example: ERP in private cloud Sales & Email in public 9

PROPERTIES Cloud computing is User centric Accessible Intelligent Programmable FEATURES Reliability Scalability Security 10

MAJOR CLOUD COMPUTING SERVICES 11

IAAS IAAS (Infrastructure as a service) Offers capacity for rent, basically hosted data centers and Servers An evolution of web site and server hosting services provided by VPS Examples: Verizon's CAAS (Computing as a service) AT&T (Hosting & Storage) 12

PAAS PAAS (Platform as a service) Platforms enable application developers to host their services Example: Google s App Engine Amazon E2C Microsoft azure 13

SAAS SAAS Software as a service The application itself is provided by service provider Examples: ENTERPRISE: SalesForce.com, WebEx, Officelive USER MAIL: gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo USER PICS: flickr, picasa 14

Amazon Microsoft windows Azure Savvis Google App Engine Vmware cloud Rack space Go grid 15

Cloud success stories 16

Future Educational Uses An expansion of Microsoft live@edu More useful spending of technology budgets Classroom collaboration Google Docs Wide Spectrum of Usage BitTorrent,Skype,LinkedIn,YouT ube, google, microsoft, forum, blo g-space,website Hosting, FaceBook, Yahoo 17

Reduced Hardware equipment for end users Improved Performance Lower Hardware and Software Maintenance Instant Software Updates Accessibility Pay for what we use Security Issues Internet connection Features may be limited Location of Servers Speed 18

SO: Finally, cloud apps don t eat up your valuable IT resources Thus cloud computing provide a super-computing power. This cloud of computers extends beyond a single company or enterprise. The applications and data served by the cloud are available to broad group of users, cross-enterprise and cross-platform 19

Cloud computing is a simple idea, but it can have huge impact on our business. 20

Cloud Model for Educational Institution IT service users of a university:

Cloud Model for Educational Institution Cloud model for users:

Cloud Model for Educational Institution Provide students and staff with software and hardware. Provide researchers and postgraduate students with the required special software and hardware to run experiments.

Cloud Model for Educational Institution Provide Web developers with the development tools needed to write and host Web applications.

Advantages of Cloud Decreased Costs. Flexibility. Location Independence. Scalability and Speed. Optimal Resource Utilization. Reduce Carbon Footprint. Minimize licensing new software.

Cloud Storage Providers Most of the biggest IT companies. Amazon Google IBM Microsoft. And many others.

Cloud Concerns Security and privacy. Vendor lock and failures. Reliability.
