Overview Overview Note The SIS Data Importer preparedness functionality is in a Beta release. The Student Success System (S3) provides instructors with achievement predictions for students taking their classes. The predictions are based on a number of success indicators, which are organized into domains: Course Access Measures student engagement in terms of logging into Learning Environment and accessing the course home page. Content Access Measures student engagement in terms of accessing Content topics and modules in the course. Social Learning Measures student engagement in Discussion forums within the course. Assessments Measures student performance on assessments. Preparedness Consists of a set of data elements from a Student Information System (SIS), including admission scores, overall institution performance, and demographics. The preparedness indicator is a beta feature that requires data elements that reside in an SIS. These data elements can be valuable predictors of student success. When combined with data elements that reside in the Desire2Learn system, particularly surrounding student engagement and effort during the class progression, the predictions are reliable and informative. To incorporate the preparedness indicator into success predictions, extract the required SIS data from your organization s SIS and import it into S3. The S3 release includes a that you can use to upload SIS data extracts from the institution s SIS into S3. This document covers the following aspects of this process: Copyright 2013 by Desire2Learn Incorporated 2

Data Elements S3 requires SIS data consisting of course grades history and information about the students in those courses. S3 requires course grades data for all courses with the preparedness domain enabled. This data includes historical offerings of each course with the past relevant grades history of those courses. Desire2Learn recommends at least five years of history, and suggests going back as far as possible. S3 requires student information for all students enrolled in the extracted courses. The required data elements consist of admission test scores, current academic progress of students in their major, and demographics including: Gender High School GPA SAT Score ACT Score Major Code Major Description Status Status description Current GPA Total Credits Attempted Total Credits Earned Data Refresh Courses that enable the preparedness domain require new data extractions when: New students enroll in classes that are already in progress in the current semester, and their SIS data is not already extracted. Typically, this can happen during the Add/Drop registration period during the first weeks of classes. At the end of this period, extract the SIS data and import it into S3. The semester ends and grades roll out for current courses, becoming historical offerings. Extract and import SIS data for these courses into S3 at the end of each semester to incorporate them in the predictive models for future offerings. Copyright 2013 by Desire2Learn Incorporated 3

The requires SIS data in CSV format as two files: Student Information (non-specific to a course) Name the Student Information file using the following naming convention: <course_name>_studentinfo.csv. The data in these files imports into the s3.sis_student_info table. The Student Information CSV file requires the following columns, in the order: Institution, Campus ID (a.k.a. Org Defined ID), Gender, High School GPA, SAT Score, ACT Score, D2L-LE Student ID (a.k.a. User ID). Course Grades (for students enrolled in the course) Notes Name the Course Grades file using the following naming convention: <course_name>_coursegrade_d2l.csv or <course_name>_coursegrade.csv. The data in these files imports into the s3.sis_student_course_grades table. The Course Grade CSV file requires the following columns, in the order: Institution, Campus ID, Course ID (a.k.a. Org Unit Code), Course Grade, Major Code, Major Description, Status (as PeopleSoft Code), Status description, Current GPA, Total Credits Attempted, Total Credits Earned, D2L-LE Course ID (a.k.a. Org Unit ID). The institution and Campus ID cannot be NULL. You have the option use only one Student Information file containing the student information for all the different courses. Follow the naming convention <prefix>_studentinfo.csv. In the event that you are importing a single file for all courses, we recommend the prefix to be a semester only (e.g. Fall2013_StudentInfo.csv). In the event that you are importing multiple files for each course, we recommend the prefix include the semester and the course name (e.g. Fall2013_Math101_StudentInfo.csv). The naming convention for the Course Grade CSV file remains the same. Information on different courses can also be stored in one Course Grade file. Currently, the system requires the D2L-LE Student ID and D2L-LE Course ID fields to be mandatory. You must add D2L-LE Student ID as the last column in the Student Information CSV file and the D2L-LE Course ID as the last column in the Course Grades CSV file. In the Course Grades CSV file, attributes other than course grades are not course specific. These other attributes can change from one semester to another, necessitating that they be incorporated with the course data. The status fields refer to the student enrollment status in their program of study. In a higher education program it is typically freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior. The takes the extracted SIS data files in CSV format and imports them into the database.. Note The SIS Data Importer is a command-line tool called D2L.AP.S3.SISImporter.exe, located at <instance_name>\approot\bin. SIS Data Flow Student Information System SIS SIS Batch Importer D2L Insights SIS Importer S3 Schema Data Warehouse SIS CSV Extracts Summary of SIS Data Flow The institution extracts the required SIS Data from the SIS database into a set of SIS CSV extracts that follow the. Notes There are two types of files: the Course Grade and Student Info CSV files. The SIS Data Importer expects a parameter with the path of a folder containing the mapped CSV files by the following usage: <instance_name>\approot\bin\d2l.ap.s3.sisimporter.exe <path>\<sis_folder_name> Calculating the preparedness indicator During configuration, the model administrator can enable and disable the data domains that are used in building the predictive model, including the Preparedness domain. Enabled Preparedness domain When the Preparedness domain is enabled in the model configuration, the predictive model incorporates the SIS data elements to calculate the preparedness indicator. The preparedness indicator reflects the predicted grade for students within the course offering before it starts, displaying in the student dashboard as part of the win-loss chart, and using color to indicate the predicted success level (green for successful, yellow for potential risk, and red for at-risk). Visualizing the Preparedness domain in the win-loss chart Displaying a set of SIS data elements in the student dashboard Users with the See Student SIS Data permission enabled can see a set of SIS data elements in each student dashboard. These elements display as part of the student profile information in the student dashboard: Student major Student status Credits earned Credits attempted Copyright 2013 by Desire2Learn Incorporated 6
