Using Facebook Pages in the Classroom There are many ways that you can incorporate Facebook Pages to support and compliment what you teach both inside and outside the traditional classroom. For example, you can use Facebook Pages to share relevant links; like newspaper articles, online videos, or even RSS feeds from your existing class blog or school website. Creating a Facebook Page for your classroom is super easy! Here s how to get started! How To: Create a Facebook Page for Your Classroom 1. Login into your existing Facebook Account or create an account. Once you have logged in click here: http://www.facebook.com/page. 1

2. Pick the category that best fits who you are or what your organization represents. Don t worry if the category you select doesn t fit perfectly, but pick the closest match since you won t be able to change your category. Enter your name or the name of your classroom as you want it to appear to Facebook users. Like the category, your name is one of the few things you won t be able to change. 2

3. You re now looking at your unpublished Page now you can customize it. First, upload a profile picture by clicking change picture on the question mark to the left of your Page. It s easy to change your photo on your Page. Just hover your mouse over the question mark and click the Change Picture link. 3

4. Click the Information Tab on the left sidebar and then click 'Edit Information' and enter as much basic and detailed information as you can. The fields available will depend on which category you chose when creating your Page. The more details you can add about who you or your organization are and what you are all about, the more successful your Page will be. Also, be sure to add a short blurb to the 'About Box' under your profile picture. 4

A Note About Facebook Apps There are many Facebook Apps available that you may be able to use in your classroom or recommend to students, however, you should be aware that by using these applications some of your information will be accessible to the third-party application developer. Facebook has developed an interface they call Granular Data Permissions (or GDP) that allows you to see exactly which pieces of information an app is asking to access before you approve the app. To see what apps you have authorized and what information they are collecting, login to Facebook and go to Account > Privacy Settings > Apps & Websites > Edit Your Settings > Apps You Use to view and edit the Apps, Games and Websites you are using. Safety, Privacy & Facebook Pages A priority at Facebook is giving everyone control over their privacy. This helps create an online environment where teachers, parents, and students can connect and share safely. To learn more about privacy and safety on Facebook, take a look at the resources available in the Facebook Safety Center http://www.facebook.com/safety. Get the Latest Scoop on Facebook Pages. For help, tips and information on the newest Facebook Pages features be sure to visit https://www.facebook.com/facebookpages. Be sure to click Like and you ll get the latest news delivered right to your news feed. You can also find additional tutorials by clicking the Resources tab on the left sidebar of the Page. Share Your Facebook Pages Story Do you have a student video you want to share? Is there a teacher or school Facebook Page that you think we should know about? Have your students used a Facebook Page in a creative or interesting way? You can share your Facebook for Educators story with other educators by emailing them to share@facebookforeducators.org and then watch for it to be shared in the resources section on this website.
