The Foundation is dedicated to supporting the College s mission of providing comprehensive academic opportunities to the community for lifelong learning. A board of directors, who provides the leadership and direction for the organization s operation, manages the Foundation. The Foundation has grown steadily since 1985 with assets over $2,000,000. This has been accomplished through donations of cash, bequests and grants from individuals and businesses. The Foundation has provided $3,026,524 in scholarships to Golden West College students. In addition to cash assets, the Foundation annually receives donated equipment and supplies that represent thousands of dollars in gifts-in-kind. Report from the Foundation Chairman Bob Polentz The Golden West Foundation again participated in the and Awards Ceremony held in May by awarding scholarships to over 200 students. Since 1986, the Foundation has awarded over $3,000,000 to deserving students. This has been extremely gratifying to the Foundation as the awarding of scholarships is a direct contributor to the enhancement of student success at Golden West College. On Saturday April 19, the Foundation held its eleventh annual major successful fundraiser, the Golden West College Gala. We are happy to report that we raised approximately $135,000. The proceeds will benefit Golden West College students and college programs. We particularly want to thank Elmore Toyota, Irvine Health Foundation, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., and Union Bank of California as major sponsors and all the other underwriters who gave so generously to this event. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Gala Committee and its chair, Patricia Meredith, as well as the community at large for continuing to support this very important event for the college. We look forward to continued success at our twelfth Gala scheduled for March 21, 2009. Our 17th Annual Courtyard of Honor Ceremony was celebrated last October. We had six Pillars of Support (+$25,000) including the Jane Axel Memorial, The Edwards Lifesciences Fund, Harbor Beach Division #77 Foundation, McBeth Foundation, Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center and The Pillar of Peace. The donor wall was increased by 72 donor names, with six in the Golden Society ($10,000+) category. Three GWC alumni were honored as Alumni Pillar of Achievement recipients. Since the inception of this awards program in 1991, eighty one alumni have been honored. Golden West College dedicated its first new building since the 1980 s in November, The Frank M. and Gertrude R. Doyle School of Nursing and Health Services. The building was dedicated in memory of Frank M. and Gertrude R. Doyle, founders of the Frank M. Doyle Foundation. The Frank M. Doyle Foundation donated a $1 million endowment which will be used to support a legacy of professional health instruction and services, making a significant difference in the lives of Golden West College students by providing the opportunity to train on the newest technology and advances in health care. The Foundation would also like to recognize donors that gave gifts to name portions of this building. The Irvine Health Foundation $150,000; The McBeth Foundation $50,000; and The Associated Students of Golden West College $35,000. As we look to 2009, we want to express our collective gratitude for the continued participation and leadership of the Foundation Board members whose continued commitment and participation is critical to the overall success of the Foundation s mission. The Foundation s objectives for 2009 include expanding Board membership and continuing a high level of participation from our members while seeking fresh ideas for new fund raising opportunities and expansion of existing programs. This year has continued to be challenging from an investment perspective. HighMark Capital Management, our financial adviser, is doing a good job considering these challenging times. In closing, I would like to personally thank the Foundation Board of Directors and those who have provided advice, counsel, professional guidance, financial support and personal time to the Board during the past year. It is not often that I have had the unique opportunity to work with such a dedicated group, and I look forward to the upcoming year in which we will work as a team towards the goal of enhancing student success at Golden West College. Robert Polentz, Chairman Golden West College Foundation The Golden West College Foundation does not charge a management or administrative fee for scholarships. The entire scholarship donation is given to the student. The reception following the ceremony provides a great opportunity for recipients to meet and thank their donors. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Foundation Board of Directors for their time and resources and our donors and community members for their generous support. Golden West College has a profound impact on the lives of our students, and the Foundation strives to support the vital resources that empower our students to realize their potential as individuals and as professionals in our community. Thank you all for making student success a priority with your continuing support. I am privileged to work with such an enthusiastic, professional board and to represent Golden West College in the community. Director, Foundation and Community Relations 2008 s & Awards, con t. Message from Golden West College President, Wes Bryan What a bumpy year to write an annual report! It was a banner year for this Foundation at a time when the economy took a turn for the worse. This is a cyclical trend that California community colleges have experienced with more frequency than I care to recall. When the state economy takes a dip, enrollments at community colleges soar. Predictably, in a time of fiscal crisis people realize that we are at the heart of workforce development, and that an educated populace has always been the strength of our economy. Quite often, when the state can t adequately address our financial needs, the private donor steps up to the plate to help Golden West College to provide students with scholarships, books, and the classroom with needed equipment and supplies. Living in an affluent area, we sometimes forget how important these efforts are in making a significant difference in the lives of our students. We know that students who earn a vocational degree or certificate will see their wages jump from $25,600 to $47,571 in just three years. We also know they are more likely to be involved in community service, live healthier lives, and have greater job satisfaction. I am proud to be associated with a Foundation Board that understands the importance of educational opportunities, donates their time, and expends their energy to help students in need. It is gratifying to know that our donors realize and understand the importance of supporting two-year institutions and their students to help prepare them for transfer or learn entry level job skills. They know that if they can help them get a strong start, students are more likely to finish their degree or certification. Community colleges play a central role in workforce and transfer preparation. The Harbor Beach Division 77 Scholarshp Foundation Pillar Willa Sigler Foundation President with her daughter, Mary Ann The McBeth Foundation Pillar The Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center Pillar Sue Romero, Director of Acute Care Services I hope as you review this report you will consider involving yourself to a greater degree in the projects that our campus community sponsors. Without your support, the college could not begin to offer the scholarships and programs which provide our students with so many avenues to success. I am excited to be on this Board as we make plans together to ensure that the next 40 years will be as bright as the last. Their name, Hens & Chickens, was taken from the name of a quilt block. Originally a group of 5, they have been 25 members strong and range in age from 7 years old to 75. Each year, they make an opportunity quilt and donate the funds to GWC scholarships as well as contributions to the campus for such projects as theater renovations, ballet bars for the dance department, new library books, a Fine Arts Gallery security system, Science Museum animals and recently a brick entryway for the GWC California Native Plant Garden. This year s quilt is a Split 9 Patch pattern and was made large enough for a king-sized bed. The fabrics were from the Hoffman Fabric s 2008 Challenge collection, which had an oriental theme. The quilt was assembled by all 12 members of the auxiliary in one meeting and was then quilted by one of the members on a long-arm quilting machine. STAR Book Reserve Program Keeps Students Reading For the fourth consecutive year, the Golden West College Foundation has allocated funds to the GWC Library for the purchase of textbooks under the STAR (Student Textbook Access Reserve Collection) Book Program. This program, which began in the 2004-2005 school year, gives students access to over 240 titles covering 45 academic departments. Last year, students checked out books from the STAR collection over 3,400 times, with the top title being Calculus: Single Variable, two years running. The STAR program has become a great success among students who wish to get a jump start on their studies and also to those students who cannot afford purchasing a full compliment of textbooks. Faculty are also participating by donating their own textbooks to the collection. This year the Foundation allocated $10,000 to the STAR program, allowing the library to add over 220 titles to the collection. Non-Cash Donations, con t. We were pleased to have them back for their third Gala. Although an elegant black tie affair, it sported a tropical flair with the beach setting and the stunning floral centerpieces. Over 350 guests enjoyed an evening of dining, dancing, and visiting with friends and colleagues; with the end result of generating assistance for students and programs. The Gala also makes wishes come true for many campus departments for much-needed items submitted to the Wish List. The Live and Silent Auctions brought in over $53,000. The items ranged from original art, trips to Hawaii, and even a ride for two on the Goodyear Blimp Spirit of America. It was an honor to serve as Chairperson of the 11th annual GWC Gala and raising funds that will benefit students. With the Master Blaster confetti machine in high gear, the float rocked up Main Street to great patriotic music of the Jon Kubis Band with the G-Dub, the 1971 VW Bus Outreach vehicle, in the lead. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley and Golden West College have formed a unique partnership, to be the first in the state to house a youth facility on a college campus. The 30,000-square-foot facility will be home to a new child development center, school-age youth club and a gymnasium and is expected to be completed in summer or fall 2009. Construction will be done in phases and will begin with the child development center, which will have eight classrooms, office space for staff and a resource center. The gymnasium and a school-age facility with education, activity and technology centers will be completed late 2010 or early 2011. The club currently has an operating Child Development Center on the Golden West College campus that serves about 85 children in an infant care/toddler program. The club has been searching for a larger facility for years, one that would allow it to increase its programs and serve more families in northern Huntington Beach. Human Puzzle The Anatomy students of Golden West College are fortunate to have one of the world s most amazing puzzles a disarticulated human skull. Divided into 14 pieces, the disarticulated, or separated, skull can be dismantled and reconstructed over and over again. Students are required to identify each piece (in Latin!) and reconstruct the skull perfectly for a passing grade in Anatomy, all the while singing the Anatomy class theme song, I fall to pieces They Wished for a Dummie The Golden West College Criminal Justice Training Center needed a dummie, and the Foundation provided one. Survivor is a unique agility training dummie designed to simulate an unconscious victim and assist in creating a realistic unconscious victim rescue. The dummie weighs in at 165 pounds and is made of durable, heavy duty Kevlar filled with sand. Used in the Regular Basic Police Courses, Survivor can be lifted under his arms, or carried over the shoulders of a training officer, and has realistic features that aid in various types of rescue techniques. Survivor is also known as a drag dummie and is used in one of the five mandated physical agility tests in Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.), in which all police recruits must show proficiency to become a Peace Officer in the State of California. The Golden West College Foundation is proud to support the Criminal Justice Training Program, who requested the dummie through the Foundation s annual Wish List program.
