The definitions and scopes of the concepts of social aid, social work, social welfare, features of social work as a branch of science and discipline, its aims, basic aspects and value system of the profession are analyzed. SHF 103 The History of Social Work 2 0 2 / 3 The course covers the history of social work in Turkey. Topics like social work in Ottoman and Republic era, charity services and institutions and the history of social welfare service and institutions in the West will be studied. SHA 101 Social Work Institutions 1 2 2 / 3 Within this course, students are provided with information related to social work institutions, associations, foundations affiliated with the Ministry of Family and Social Policies and social work institutions affiliate with individuals. As embodiment, certain social work institutions of the city are visited. SHA 103 Introduction to Psychology 2 0 2 / 2 The course covers topics such as social and emotional development, personality, conduct, behavior, stimulus, reaction, perception, learning, memory, schools of psychology, contemporary approaches to psychology, social psychology. SHA 105 Introduction to Sociology 2 0 2 / 2 The issues related to the basic social concepts and institutions; family, religion, economy, socialization and social stratification are analyzed within its methods and techniques. TBT 101 Basic Information And Communication Technologies 2 0 2 / 2 The course covers basic information on IT and its usage. Features of a computer, hardware, software, types of software, database management, and application programs are examined.
ATA 101 Principles of Atatürk and History of Turkish Revolution (I) 2 0 2 / 2 The course covers topics such as Turkish War of Independence, foreign affairs in the era of Ataturk, national sovereignty, Ataturk s reforms and principles, political change after French Revolution, reflections of nationalism in Ottoman Empire, foundation of Turkish Republic, problems faced when the dynamic, innovative, modern government structure was being established and issues of today s Turkey. TDL 101 Turkish Language I 2 0 2 /2 Professions directly focus on human beings are based on languages. It is impossible to build healthy communication with patients, families, and society without efficient Turkish language skills. That is why development phases of Turkish language, its place within other languages of the works, using it efficiently, oral and written expressions are very important. YDL 101 English (I) 3 0 3 / 4 This course covers basic level subjects in in English. Students who pass proficiency exam are exempt from this course. SECOND SEMESTER SHF 102 Reporting and Presentation Skills 2 0 2 / 3 The course covers topics like scientific research methods within social work and social sciences, and development of literature review skills. Field research and tentative research are taught associated with the profession. SHA 102 Comparative Charity Work and Social Assistance 3 0 3 / 4 The course covers topics like social work applications in Europe, the USA, Turkey, recent era social work service polices, issues related to social work, changes and transformations and new approaches. Months of Ramadan, iftars, poverty, alms and charity, aids, rest houses, foundation services, social welfare and social aid in Islam and professional social welfare in Europe, the USA and Turkey are comparatively studied. SHA 104 Developmental Psychology (Child- Adolescent) 3 0 3 / 5 As Social Work focuses directly on human beings, the course covers the developmental aspects, milestones and theories of human beings. The course also emphasizes the issues of child and adolescent development. SHA 106 Social Psychology 2 0 2 / 3 The course covers topics like the definition of social psychology, perception of individuals within the society, behaviors, social awareness, associating them with the social work profession.
SHA 108 Social Anthropology 2 0 2 / 4 The course covers the theories and methods of socio-cultural anthropology, culture, cultural diversity, age, gender, family, kinship, identity, cultural change, economy, political changes, improvement and applied anthropology. GKB 102 Main Concepts of Law 2 0 2 / 3 The course covers topics like the definition of law, significance of social rules in social life, administrative law, civil law, criminal law, legal system and reformation. ATA 102 Principles of Atatürk and History of Turkish Revolution (II) 2 0 2 / 2 The course covers topics such as Turkish War of Independence, foreign affairs in the era of Ataturk and national sovereignty. TDL 102 Turkish Language II 2 0 2 / 2 The course analyses the development of Turkish language, its place among other languages, its efficient use, writing and oral skills. It contributes the oral and written communication skills. YDL 102 English II 3 0 3 / 4 The course covers the basic English skills. It prepares students to the Academic Writing Skills course. Students who pass proficiency exam are exempt from this course THIRD SEMESTER SHF 201 Social Work Theory I 3 0 3 / 5 The course covers social work applications in micro level. Students analyze basic features and functions of social work towards individuals, as a branch of science and profession. It is the actualization of social individual work as Social Work Theory. SHF 203 Social Work Research 3 0 3 / 4 The course helps students analyze social events in research process, collect data, organize the data collected, interpret, assess it and present it as a social work knowledge as a whole. SHF 205 Human Behavior and Social Environment (I) 3 0 3 / 3 Within this course, students learn about the theories that consist of biological, psychological and social development of families, groups, organizations, associations, communities, and even societies that individuals live in.
SHA 201 Social Structure of Turkey 3 0 3 / 4 From Seljuk to Ottoman and Republic Era, the course covers the explanation of social structures, basic dynamics of the social structures, development ways and aspects, modernization, technological socialization and periodical economic development. SHA 205 Active Aging 3 0 3 / 4 The course covers topics like policies towards individuals and social groups for the protection of life quality as much as increasing the average life time. It also consists of topics related to required social security, care and help policies for individuals to actualize their potentials and lead a life in good physical, social and mental situation. FOURTH SEMESTER SHF 202 Social Work Theory II 3 0 3 / 5 It is the solution oriented social work in family and group levels. Problems are determined in family and group level. Information is collected, plans are completed and direct or indirect intervention is made. Finalization, assessment and result dependent intervention techniques and functionality are highlighted. SHF 204 Social Work Law 2 0 2 / 2 The course covers topics like the regulations of the Ministry of Family and Social Policies, child law, civil law, social law related to foundations and associations. SHF 206 Human Behaviors and Social Environment (II) 3 0 3 / 3 Development and behavior of individuals are analyzed in multidimensional ways. Relations between psycho-social, biological, economic, cultural, environmental, corporate aspects are discussed. Acts of family, group, social network and systems are examined in detail.
SHF 208 Calculation of Social Benefits and Statistical Analysis 2 0 2 / 3 The course covers the definitions of economic and social cost, social benefit concepts, determination of short, medium and long term benefits of social projects and programs, recent era successful social programs conducted in EU, USA and Turkey and comparative analysis of selected programs according to their benefits and cost. SHA 202 Applied Social Work Research 2 8 6 / 6 Just like science and technology increases the life standards of societies, social work researches help new generation social work specialists in analyzing moral corruptions in individuals that occur because of extreme acquisitiveness, self-interest anxiety and adaptation problems when faced with constant, sudden and rapid changes in their surroundings. SHA 303 Social Work with Families and Children 2 0 2 / 3 The course covers topics like family within a changing social structure, recent era family policies, program and projects, spouse and child abuse, divorce rates, leaving home, loss in the family, social work intervention in family, treatment and rehabilitation. SHA 305 Family Counseling 3 6 6 / 6 The course covers topics like family as a system, family systems, functionality, psychopathological family structure, and psychopathology of adults, children, and adolescents in the family, family counseling theories, intervention process, and basic problems between spouses, private issues, family problems and intervention as a legal process.
SHA 309 Medical and Psychiatric Social Work 2 0 2 / 2 The course covers topics like solving primary social problems that originate from the individual himself/herself or his/her family, efficient utilization of treatment in a private or public hospital, planning and application of psychiatric social work as a part of the treatment team in psychiatry clinics. SHA 304 Practice at Social Work Institutions 0 8 4 / 6 Weekly, student interns apply the methods and techniques of social work profession to the field within the social work organizations affiliated with the Ministry of Family and Social Policies, municipalities, NGOs. Academicians who lead the internships produces professional forms related to internship application, assessment, and its results. SHA 306 Senior and Elderly Services 2 0 2 / 2 The course consists of topics like old age, its periods, features of the periods, social perception towards elderly, elderly care and services, contribution of elderly to economic, social and cultural life as active individuals and policies to encourage this contribution. SHA 308 Criminality and Social Work 2 0 2 / 2 The course covers topics like soliciting a child, social work in houses of correction and correctional facilities, pre-release and post-release orientation programs for inmates, role and importance of a social work specialist in child and family courts.
SHA 310 Child Protection and Care Services 3 0 3 / 4 The course covers topics related to care models and services provided by the government to the children of the families which cannot fulfill care and education responsibilities. Topics such as adoption, foster families, foundling hospitals and reformatories are also explained. SHA 403 Social Policy and Planning 3 0 3 / 5 The course covers topics like determination of basic social policies, explanation of historical and conceptual developmental stages, the importance and role of social work within social policies, main differences between social policy approaches in the USA and European Union, basic social policy approaches and applications in Turkey before planned development and during planned development eras. SHA 405 Practice in Social Work Institutions 0 8 4 / 6 Weekly, student interns apply the methods and techniques of social work profession to the field within the social work organizations affiliated with the Ministry of Family and Social Policies, municipalities, NGOs. Academicians who lead the internships produces professional forms related to internship application, assessment, and its results. SHA 407 Global Perspectives at Social Work 3 0 3 / 4 Within this course, the framework and development of international social politics are explained thoroughly. Social, economic and cultural issues that affect the most socially disadvantageous groups are highlighted. Immigration, non-contagious diseases, violence against women, poverty and deficiency, human trafficking and natural disasters are also discussed. SHA 409 Social Work Philosophy and Ethics 2 0 2 / 4 The course covers topics like the significance and essence of the values of human beings and their ethics. It helps social work specialists to internalize professional principles related to the society and public life and analyze social benefit and value systems together. Internships are mainly served in the social work organizations affiliated with the Ministry of Family and Social Policies, municipalities and NGOs. Academicians who lead the internship studies fulfill their professional responsibilities about internship applications, assessments, and results. Within this course, a candidate s skill to turn theory into practice is tested. This is the last stage where the student s graduation as a social work specialist is determined. SHA 236 General Health 2 0 2 / 4 Basic topic related to anatomy and physiology are explained, preventive health care, treatment services, socialization of health services, health transformation programs, basic elements of recent era health policies and urban hospitals are highlighted.

SHA 234 Social Work with Immigrants and Refugees 2 0 2 / 4 The course focuses on the concepts of immigration, immigrants, refugees and regulations. Topics related to the meaning of immigration and asylum within social work and what responsibilities and functions they assign to social work specialists are discussed. SHA 237 Introduction to Economics 2 0 2 / 4 The course covers the basis of the micro economy theory, shortage, demand, market structures, and prices, types of competition, consumer behavior, labor market, company balance and social reflection of economic development. SHA 238 Communication Skills 2 0 2 / 4 The course covers topics like the meaning of communication, its aim and features, elements that affect communication, communication techniques, body language, written and oral communication. Social work profession, interpersonal problem and conflict management topics are highlighted. SHA 240 Old-text Reading Skills 2 0 2 / 4 The course aims to train students as more qualified researchers who can study about the social work services of the past. SHA 242 Social Benefit Focused on Social Work Policies 2 0 2 / 4 The course covers topics like the policies of Turkish Social Service and Children Protection Institution, Ministry of Family and Social Policies, social work in local administrations, social aid and solidarity associations, present applications, social welfare and sense of social benefit. SBF 331 Academic Writing Skills I 2 0 2 / 4 The aim of this course is to provide students with English academic writing skills. Within this course, students will read and produce texts. Students will learn to produce thoughts and write by organizing the thoughts they have produced. SHA 333 Social Inclusion and Social Work 2 0 2 / 4 In order to raise awareness about social exclusion reasons, topics related to socialization of disadvantageous groups, employment policies, social values, and social service models related to the services of disadvantageous groups are analyzed. SHA 335 Poverty and Social Work 2 0 2 / 4 The course focuses on poverty in the world and in Turkey, analyzing poverty within individuals, groups, families and societies. Examples of struggle against poverty, micro credit applications, methods applied by social work specialists against poverty are explained. The significance of the prevention of poverty culture is highlighted.
SHA 337 Social Change 2 0 2 / 4 Economic, social and cultural changes in the world and in Turkey affect the social structure. Economic development and information technologies change social structures rapidly. The course focuses on the ways of change, processes, positive and negative changes, their ways, periods, and speed. Natural environment, biological conditions, technology concepts and facts, social structure and change in social institutions are discussed. SHA 339 Women Studies 2 0 2 / 4 The course covers studies and researches of the Ministry of Family and Social Policies, Turkish Social Service and Children Protection Institution, Ministry of Health and universities on women, women health and education. SHF 341 Common Conceptual Instruments in Social Work 2 0 2 / 4 The course covers topics like introduction of the social work profession and its field. It focuses on the basic concepts mentioning the other branches of science. Besides the concepts of social work, social justice, social security, social welfare, concepts and applications of social work for children, disabled, youth, adult and elderly are analyzed. International and national texts about human rights in general and children and women rights specifically are introduced. Formation of a common professional language and common conceptual devices among social work specialists are encouraged. SBF 332 Academic Writing Skills II 2 0 2 / 4 The aim of this course is to provide students with English academic writing skills. Within this course, students will read and produce texts related to social work. SBF 336 Health Education 2 0 2 / 4 This course provides students with basic information, attitude and skills required to apply healthcare and social service activities within the process of learning and teaching. SHA 336 Brotherhood, Tolerance and Social Services in Islam 2 0 2 / 4 The course covers topics like fraternity in the Quran, verses of the Quran related to rights of neighbors, orphans, and protection of the poor, saying and hadith of Prophet Muhammad on the rights of orphans and social aid, the era of the companions of Prophet Muhammad, religious aid and developments regarding foundations in the Seljuk, Ottoman, and Republic era. Social state, social security and social welfare applications are highlighted. SHA 338 Human Rights and Social Work 2 0 2 / 4 The course covers topics like rights, justice, social justice, social government, social security, human rights declaration and contracts. The function of social work in the field of democracy culture and human rights is explained.
SHA 431 Industrial Social Work 2 0 2 / 4 The course covers topics like the definition of industrial social work, social work roles and skills in business environment, role of social work specialist in the development of labor health and security, usage of social work skills in human resources management, job loss, role and function of social work specialists in labor unions, future of industrial social work. SHA 433 Reporting Techniques for Social Analysis 2 0 2 / 4 The course covers topics like scientific report writing techniques, professional social analysis reports, identifying information, data collection methods and resources, assessment and intervention plans. Intervention process reports, group and member analysis reports, society analysis reports are explained via examples. SHA 435 Project Development and Strategic Planning 2 0 2 / 4 The course covers topics like analysis, vision, mission, principles, values and strategic targets of social work institutions. Projects of institutions, monitoring, assessment, performance measurement, project management and planning are discussed in detail. SHA 437 School Social Work 2 0 2 / 4 The course focuses on the organizational structure, regulations, social work applications according to education levels and learning and teaching in the family. Social work programs which focus on family and school are discussed. Students learn about free book, education aids for families, scholarships, milk and food aids and recent era education policies.
