University of Rochester Specialized Degree Programs 1

Specialized Degree Programs The hallmark of a University of Rochester education is the freedom to design an undergraduate curriculum that caters to your interests and career path. But what if your desired career path requires graduate or professional education? Or, what if your undergraduate interests involve pursuing two degrees at two different colleges within the University of Rochester? If you re interested in careers related to engineering, education, or medicine, you may want to learn more about the University of Rochester s Combined-Admission Programs (CAPs). CAPS combine a bachelor s degree with a graduate/professional degree by simplifying the application process. Through CAPS, you may earn admission to the respective graduate or professional school at Rochester while also earning admission to the undergraduate College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering. Additionally, Rochester offers two Dual Degree programs which enable students to complete bachelor s degrees offered at different colleges within the university. While attending the College, students can also apply for the Eastman School of Music to be a Dual Degree Eastman student, or they can apply to the School of Nursing to be considered a Dual Degree Nursing student. Will you take advantage? In addition to the benefits of their combined programs, CAPs and Dual Degree students enjoy all of the same opportunities as other Rochester students, including consideration for undergraduate scholarships, the flexible Rochester Curriculum, study abroad, and unique programs such as Take Five, a tuition-free fifth year to pursue an interest outside of your major. 2 University of Rochester Specialized Degree Programs

Combined-Admission Programs Careers in engineering, education, and medicine are in high demand and can be vastly rewarding fields, but the path required to get there can be a long one. Rochester s Combined-Admission Programs among just a few such programs in the country can help you get there faster and achieve greater success along the way by: eliminating the graduate/professional school entrance exam requirement (GRE, MCAT, etc) granting simultaneous admission to both the undergraduate and graduate degree programs giving you a head start with your interests as you build connections with your advisors, professors, guest speakers, internships, and classmates. That leaves you with one less test to take, one less (lengthy) application process, and a lot more time to focus your energy on the coursework and activities that interest you. As a student interested in engineering (GEAR), education (GRADE), or medicine (REMS), you do not have to give up any activities or interests that you would pursue as any other undergraduate student. GEAR Graduate Engineering at Rochester GUARANTEED ROCHESTER ACCELERATED DEGREE IN EDUCATION ROCHESTER EARLY MEDICAL SCHOLARS The GEAR and GRADE programs in engineering and education are available to freshman and transfer applicants, while the REMS program in medicine is only available to freshmen applicants. Dual Degree Programs The few years it takes to earn a college degree are an investment with everlasting returns, but at the University of Rochester what you accomplish in those few undergraduate years is not limited to just one bachelor s degree. In a constantly changing world where having multiple skills are not only a luxury but increasingly a necessity, it s important to consider all of your interests that may serve you well in the future. The University of Rochester Dual Degree programs, combined with the flexible Rochester curriculum, enable students to get the most out of their undergraduate education. They have the opportunity to not only double (or triple!) major at the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering, but also pursue a bachelor s degree at one of our other prestigious colleges simultaneously: the Eastman School of Music or the School of Nursing. DUAL DEGREE WITH EASTMAN (DDE) DUAL DEGREE IN NURSING (DDN) University of Rochester Specialized Degree Programs 5

Dual Degree with Eastman (DDE) Let s say you are a world-class musician and you ve always imagined yourself performing on stage among other equally talented musicians. Perhaps your talents don t end there and you have also always been interested and engaged in the field of Brain & Cognitive Sciences. At Rochester, your focus on a career in music performance would require a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music, while your interests in Brain & Cognitive Sciences can only be attained with a Bachelor of Science degree offered at the College. Only 15 minutes apart, each campus has its own atmosphere, admissions office, and areas of study. Although music lessons are available to all University of Rochester students for free regardless of major and the College does offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, no other student can as fully engage in the best of both worlds as a Dual Degree with Eastman (DDE) student. DDE enables students who are admitted at each campus the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science at the College and a Bachelor of Music in any of 5 degree programs offered at the Eastman School of Music: Applied Music (Performance) Composition Jazz Studies & Contemporary Media Music Education Theory Perks of the program include: The opportunity to simultaneously pursue degrees from a world-renowned music conservatory and a prestigious tier-one research university Focused counseling from advisors at both the College and the Eastman School The freedom to choose which campus to call home The ability to compare financial aid and scholarship offers from both campuses 6 University of Rochester Specialized Degree Programs

Not only are students in the DDN program exposed to one of the most prestigious paths to advanced fields in nursing such as a nurse practitioner or a doctorate in nursing, but they have the opportunity to access any number of academic disciplines and research opportunities offered at the College. Students in the DDN program graduate in four-and-a-half years with their Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in any academic department at the College. Perks of the program include: Assured admission to the University of Rochester School of Nursing in the eighth semester Exemption from qualifying exams for the BSN program Access to premier research facilities* Focused counseling from advisors at the College and the School of Nursing *Students benefit from the extraordinary resources of our two teaching hospitals, Strong Memorial Hospital (and its Golisano Children s Hospital) and Highland Hospital, both designated as magnet hospitals. The University also has a broad range of longstanding affiliations with other hospitals, health systems, and community-based organizations throughout the Greater Rochester Region. Many graduates of the School of Nursing go on to work for our own University-affiliated hospitals and become leaders on their units.
