Issued: JUL 2007 STATIONS (VIS & MIS) Page 1of 3 RECOMMENDED PRACTICES PART SECTION SUB-SECTION HIGHWAY SIGNS TYPICAL SIGNING PLANS General The safety of motorists using Alberta highways, and the maintenance of an acceptable roadway condition on those highways is of critical importance to the department. The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement branch of Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation operates Vehicle Inspection Stations and Mobile Inspection Stations throughout the province to inspect large commercial vehicles to ensure they are in compliance with the size and weight regulations set out in legislation to keep highways safe and avoid damage to the roadway infrastructure (Regulations under the Traffic Safety Act). RB-76 2100 x 900 mm Closer to the site of a Vehicle/Mobile Inspection Station is the Truck Inspection Station sign (RB-75) accompanied by either the Next Left or Next Right tab sign (RB-75- TL or RB-75-TR). The presence of vehicle/mobile inspection stations and the required actions of large vehicle operators must be communicated through the use of Vehicle/Mobile Inspection Station signage. Standard Vehicle/Mobile Inspection Station signage consists of a series of regulatory signs. All commercial vehicle inspection stations have this sequence of signage. The first sign in the series is the Truck Inspection Station 2 km sign (RB-76), which consists of black symbol and text (250 mm letter height) on a white background. RB-75 2100 x 1100 mm Symbol and border

Issued: JUL 2006 STATIONS (VIS & MIS) Page 2 of 3 RB-75- TL/R 2100 x 450 mm RB-203T 2400 x 450 mm The RB-203 Vehicles Over 4,500 kg Report to Vehicle Inspection Station When Lights Flashing sign is accompanied by alternately flashing 300 mm amber light-emitting diode (LED) lights (mounted near the corners on the top of the sign) that indicate when it is mandatory for trucks to report for inspection. When the lights are not flashing, reporting for inspection or weighing is optional. The RB-77 Truck Inspection Station Next Exit sign provides direction to trucks at the exiting point to the Vehicle Inspection Station. If the inspection station is accessed at an intersection via a sharp left turn, the RB-77-L sign may be used in place of the RB-77 sign. The angle of the arrow on the RB-77 or RB-77-L sign should reflect the geometry of the access point. The RB-203 sign is accompanied by an Unless Exempted tab sign (RB-203T) which indicates to exempted vehicles (such as recreational vehicles and scheduled buses) that they are not required to stop. RB-77 2100 x 900 mm Symbol and border Guidelines for Placement RB-203 2400 x 1500 mm Vehicle/Mobile Inspection Station signage should be placed within the highway right-ofway at appropriate distances from the inspection station access point in accordance with the Placement of Signs guideline. Issued: JUL 2006 STATIONS (VIS & MIS) Page 3 of 3 are shown in the attached drawings TEB 1.31, and TEB 1.33. Actual sign placement may depend on the location of other signage in the area. In general, the Truck Inspection Station 2 km sign (RB-76) is placed 2 kilometres in advance of the inspection station. The Truck Inspection Station sign (RB-75) with Next Left or Next Right tab sign is typically placed 500 to 700 metres in advance of the taper or turning lane leading to the inspection station access. The RB-203 Vehicles Over 4,500 kg Report to Vehicle Inspection Station When Lights Flashing sign and associated tab sign should be placed 150 to 300 metres in advance of the taper or turning lane leading to the inspection station access. The RB-77 Truck Inspection Station Next Exit sign should be placed at the beginning of the roadway taper or where no taper exists, approximately 150 metres in advance of the inspection station highway access point. If an inspection station is not located adjacent to the highway, additional Truck Inspection Station (RB-75) signs may be required to guide motorists to the inspection station once they have exited the highway via the inspection station access point. At some inspection station locations it may be appropriate to install a Truck Entrance sign (WC-8R/L) in accordance with the Practice Truck Entrance guideline. Equipment Considerations The flashing LED lights (300 mm) used on the top of the RB-203 sign require a power source to function. Power can be obtained through hard-wiring, where a power source is available in the area, or through solar panels built into the light units. Where the lights are hard-wired, the power board should be located at the fence line to avoid damage in the event of a vehicle running off the road. LED lights use in conjunction with the RB- 203 sign should be installed approximately 300 mm (12 inches) from the vertical sign edges. To enhance the visibility of the flashing lights and reduce glare at locations where glare may be a concern, a black backboard should be used with the light unit.
