Introduction This guide is intended for users who are Learning Managers or User Managers in the SLSA elearning system, Pulse. Details are also provided in Addendum 1 that will assist users of the system in their day to day use of the courseware available to them. The backend functionality of this system is provided and supported by Interaction on behalf of SLSA. All matters of a technical nature should in the first instance be directed to ithelp@slsa.asn.au where it will be facilitated as required. Please refer to the full Administration Guide for more information. Lifesaving Online and ELearning Members that wish to access the elearning suite must do so through a Lifesaving Online (LSO) account. Once a Lifesaving Online account has been created and activated it is automatically connected to the members Surfguard record comparing the details provided (where a member has an existing record) or creates a new one (if they have never been a member of a surf lifesaving organisation). Linking LSO account enables the elearning suite to fully interact with all awards information in Surfguard. The system will link all organisations the member belongs to and attach all new and/or updated awards information to that member record. Personal Learning and Enrolled Learning All surf lifesaving members who access the elearning suite are given the opportunity to access the current range of training materials available in the suite of learning provided by SLSA. There will be variations to this suite defined by the State office and allocated to each member group as part of their default catalogue assignments. The available suite is shown on the landing screen when they first log into the system. This screen is typically the All My Learning screen (Fig0.1) although with learners who are undertaking a new course provided by an Event, the Learning Plan screen (Fig 0.3) will be the default view. An Event item assigned by a Chief Training Officer A default group catalogue assignment assigned at State level Fig 0.1 When a user is enrolled in a new course the Learning Plan (Fig 0.3) screen will displayed, the learning package (or modules) for the course in question will be shown. A corresponding Event item will be seen under the All My Learning tab. Pulse ELearning Guide Guide for CTO s to using Pulse (Interaction) ELearning Resource Page 3 of 11

Surfguard General Information Surfguard is the central database where all SLS person details are stored. It is also where any award information is attached to the person s records. Person details may exist already or be entered into Surfguard in a number of ways: A person is already in Surfguard as they are (or were) a member of a Surf Life Saving Club or Lifeguard Service. A person registers themselves through Lifesaving Online or elearning Portal A person is manually entered into Surfguard from details in an enrolment form by an administrator Depending on the above and how the Academy intends to allow registration, a number of processes can be followed. The following registration processes can be used: Person who is in Surfguard but has no Lifesaving online/elearning account Person in Surfguard with existing LSO account Go to the elearning Portal and select already a member and register using correct details: Go to elearning Portal and select My memberships and Join an Academy type in Client Group ID New Person to Surfguard 1. Go to elearning Portal and register 2. Receive authentication code and login to elearning 3. Section 1 Virtual Groups for Club members Chief Training Officers (CTOs) Administration in Pulse Chief Training Officers now have the ability to administer their own Virtual Club Group. Each CTO has been automatically assigned to these groups by determining their role in the Club Officers table of Surfguard. They will be able to create scheduled custom learning Events and select specific members to be included in those events. For example, a new Bronze squad would be scheduled to undertake the respective elearning courseware in conjunction with the face to face program. In this example it will be necessary to ensure those members have up to date records in Surfguard, a Lifesaving Online (LSO) account and have selected My Courses from within LSO to complete the Pulse user account creation process. All CTOs are given three broad capabilities within the elearning suite. They can: 1) Create Scheduled Events and Enrol members in those events 2) Monitor Learning in those events using the Reports functionality 3) Assign trainers to Events /Squads so that they can monitor the learning of their groups in training Event Learning Events are the top level view of course or courseware delivery for members. They are a collection of Scheduled Events defined by CTO s or Education Manager at Club and Branch level in the organisation. Each scheduled event is independent of each other so your can assign them specifically to a group of learners. Each has a default Learning Plan associated with it which contains the specific courseware to be undertaken throughout the scheduled event. Scheduled Events are a collection of 1 or more Sessions which define the period for which the elearning (typically) is undertaken. Users (members/learners) are assigned to these Scheduled Events by the CTO from the Club Virtual Group (or Groups at Branch level) they have control over. In the example of the Bronze Bay elearning courseware, 1 (default session) could be applied which has a duration of 6 weeks (42 days) or, it could be 11 sessions, with consistent duration for the expected completion period for each of the individual 11 Chapters in the PSAR 34 th Edition manual. Sessions are the individual periods of learning for a specific piece of learning. In the Bronze Bay elearning example; Chapter 1 may have a completion period of 7 days and that 7 days is the first week of the overall Bronze course program in progress ( Event Schedule in elearning). Each subsequent session will have a start and end point and associated duration, they may overlap or be end to end but ultimately finish at the end of the Scheduled Event they are a part of. Reporting The reports function is provided to enable simple review of courses undertaken within Pulse. Using this reports function trainers and assessors can review the progress of the students using a simple custom report function. You can interpret these details to show or anticipate challenges for learners throughout the progress of their study and introduce simple remedial activities that accommodate their needs. Course Management Once you have logged in to LSO and selected My Courses you will be presented with the familiar Pulse Personal Learning Plan screen containing all your courseware in the tile format. From the drop down menu at the top of the screen (activated by selecting the down arrow to the right of the label screenshot below). ) you will select Enrol and Confirm (seen in the Pulse ELearning Guide Guide for CTO s to using Pulse (Interaction) ELearning Resource Page 8 of 11

Scheduled Events Screen The available course events are listed on the left of the screen (1) Students can be invited to enrol in your new event by clicking on the Enrol User in Selected button (2). The status of those invited to enrol in the various scheduled events is shown on the right (3). To create a new Scheduled Event (such as a bronze squad) Select an Event Click on the Schedule New Event button (this presents a New Scheduled Event dialogue box) Complete all event details in the dialogue box (Start & End dates, Venue, Learning Plan and check the Create Custom team for attendees ) in this example the Spinal Management (EVENT 1) is selected Click on the Schedule button to complete The New Scheduled Event item will be added in the Events column (number count increases by 1) and can be selected to add users to it.
