Watchdog ECP240-32 System Reset Button Motherboard Figure 10. 4 Watchdog Function Schematic Operation Principle A UDP Co., Ltd. 7

When the internal watchdog counter counts down to zero, an alarm is sounded and the system is reset. The DVR system sets the watchdog timer periodically to prevent the watchdog function for resetting the system. When the system malfunctions, the DVR system is prevented to set the watchdog timer and a system reset results. Pressing the system reset button manually has the same effect as a system reset initiated by the watchdog function. Alarm To prevent system abruptly resets without any prior notification, the DVR system administrator can setup the system to sound an alarm for a predetermined period before a system reset occurs. Watchdog function does not start automatically when the system is turned on. It is enabled only when the DVR system is setup to use the watchdog function. Watchdog does not recognize manual system resets. If the system is reset manually while the watchdog is enabled, the watchdog function may reset the system again before system booting for the manual reset is completed. The watchdog initially remains at function stop state and was designed to reset without sounding a buzzer. To sound the buzzer prior to watchdog resetting, it is required to make the software control the watchdog and set the time of sounding the buzzer. The watchdog function in the software stops when the system is newly booted or reset by the watchdog so it is necessary to set the watchdog function every time. Two sets of 2-pin cable are is required to connect the watchdog cable. One is supplied with the capture card and the other is replaced by the existing reset cable enclosed in the case of the system. Firstly, the cable in the reset terminal button of the system case shall beis connected to the J5 2-pin Connector of the watchdog. Motherboard restart connector and 2-pin Connector (J6) are connected using 2-pin cable. The 2-pin Connector has no polarity or direction. As such, the cable may be plugged in the reverse direction or the connection of J5 and J6 may be interchanged. Figure 11 depicts the example of watchdog cable connection. A UDP Co., Ltd. 8

2.5 Connection with peripheral equipment Figure 12. ECP240-32 and connection with peripheral equipment 2.6 FPGA firmware updating The firmware can be modified in order to upgrade the performance and improve the stability of the ECP240-32. When newly delivered from the factory, most up-to-date firmware is installed. The existing firmware can be updated to a newer one or can be restored if damaged. Update to a new firmware The Jumper Cap should not be moved. The Jumper Cap is plugged in the NO/UP position. The ECP240-32 driver can be utilized as the device driver A UDP Co., Ltd. 10

Execute the FPGA firmware update program separately supplied. Proceed with the updating in accordance with the indication of the update program. Reboot the system. The ECP240-32 will not be operated by the new firmware unless the system is rebooted. Caution! Stop all other application programs except the update program in order to ensure stable updating of the program. If the updating is not succeeded or if the firmware seems to be damaged, restoration can be executed by the following methods. Restoring broken firmware 1 Turn off the power to the system. 2 Remove the ECP240-32 card from the system. 3 Move the jumper wire from the FPGA firmware restoring pin header JP2 to RE. 4 Insert the ECP240-32 card into the system and turn on the power to the system. The ECP240-32 card will restore automatically into the most stable firmware. While the restoring process is ongoing, the user can proceed to the next steps. 5 Once the windows are successfully booted, execute the firmware update program and according to the indication of the program, update the firmware. 6 If the update is successfully completed, be sure to shutdown system, without rebooting. 7 After checking that the power to the system is off, remove the ECP240-32 card. Move the jumper wire from the FPGA firmware restoring pin header to NO/UP position. 8 Install the ECP240-32 card into the system. Firmware restoration is now completed. Caution! When moving the 3-pin Jumper cap, be sure to remove the ECP240-32 card from the SYSTEM prior to initialize the work. Caution! Stop all the other application programs except the update program in order to ensure stable updating of the program. Normally, the updating process will not fail, however, if failed, apply the Restoring broken firmware process for firmware restoration. A UDP Co., Ltd. 11
