Migrating Cirrus 3 Procedure Overview To move your Cirrus Configuration Management installation to a new server, you will need the following items. A computer meeting the minimum requirements for the new installation of Cirrus Configuration Management. For more information on requirements, see Installing Cirrus Configuration Management on page 6. Depending on the size of your database, schedule an appropriate maintenance window to perform the migration procedure. User accounts with administrative rights on both servers. You will need to reset your license to register Cirrus Configuration Management on your new computer. Contact installation@solarwinds.com with your CustomerID number to request a license reset. A temporary storage area for custom scripts and reports. This can be any storage device able to hold the information and accessible to each Cirrus Configuration Management computer, for example, a network drive accessible by each computer, a memory stick, or an external hard drive. Requirements The requirements for Cirrus Configuration Management vary based upon the number of nodes, the frequency of configuration downloads, the length of time that configurations are maintained in the database, among other factors. The following table provides the minimal requirements for a Cirrus Configuration Management installation: Software/Hardware Operating System CPU Speed Memory Hard Drive Space Windows account Database Requirements Windows 2000 Server Windows XP Pro Windows 2003 Server with IIS installed 800 MHz 256 MB 1GB Requires administrator permission on the target server SQL Server 2000 MSDE, Standard, or Enterprise -or- SQL Server 2005 Express, Standard, or Enterprise -or- Access/Jet

4 Migrating Cirrus About the Database You can use a Microsoft Access database as your Cirrus Configuration Management database, if you are managing a small number of devices. A copy of Microsoft SQL 2005 Express is distributed with each copy of Cirrus Configuration Management. SQL 2005 Express supports a maximum database size of 4GB. For more information about SQL Server installation, see the Microsoft website at http://www.microsoft.com/sql. Migrating Cirrus Configuration Management Complete the following procedure to move Cirrus Configuration Management. To move Cirrus Configuration Management to another computer: 1. Log on to the computer with an administrator account on which you installed the current Cirrus Configuration Management. 2. Close Cirrus Configuration Management and any other running applications. 3. If you are using a SQL database, backup your database. For more information, see Moving Your Orion Database on the documentation page of the SolarWinds website. Note: While the technical reference was originally written to deal with moving Orion NPM databases, the procedures are specific to SQL Server, not the database being moved. 4. Log in to the new computer, and then install Cirrus Configuration Management. For more information, see Installing Cirrus Configuration Management on page 6. 5. If you are using an Access database, copy your database, typically ConfigurationManagement.ConfigMgmt, from the old computer to the same path on the new computer. 6. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Configuration Management > Cirrus Configuration Management. 7. Click File > New/Open Database Wizard. 8. Review the Welcome window, and then click Next 9. Click Open an Existing Database, and then click Next. 10. If you are using a SQL database, complete the following procedure: a. Click SQL Server Database. b. Select the appropriate authentication method and, if necessary, provide your user login credentials. c. Select your SQL Server from the list. d. Select your database from the list, and then click OK. 11. If you are using an Access database, complete the following procedure: a. Click Microsoft Access Database. b. Browse to the location of your database. c. Click OK. 12. Click Finished.

Migrating Cirrus 5 Migrating Jobs If you are running scheduled jobs, copy them to the new computer. To move jobs to new hardware: 2. Copy the files in the Configuration Management\Jobs folder. 3. Paste the files into the Configuration Management\Jobs folder on the new server. 4. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer. 5. Browse to My Computer > Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks. 6. Select all of your Cirrus Configuration Management jobs, and then click Edit > Copy. 7. Paste the job files into the same folder on the new server. Migrating Scripts If you have created custom scripts, copy them to the new computer. To move scripts to new hardware: 2. Copy the files in the Configuration Management\Scripts folder. 3. Paste the files into the Configuration Management\Scripts folder on the new server. Migrating Reports If you have created custom reports, copy them to the new computer. To move reports to new hardware: 2. Copy the files in the Configuration Management\Reports folder. 3. Paste the files into the Configuration Management\Reports folder on the new server. Migrating Device Command Templates If you have created custom device command templates, copy them to the new computer. To move device command templates to new hardware: 2. Copy the files in the Configuration Management\DeviceTypes folder. 3. Paste the files into the Configuration Management\DeviceTypes folder on the new server.

6 Migrating Cirrus Migrating the Config Archive If you have taken advantage of the ability to archive configuration files, copy them to the new computer. To move device command templates to new hardware: 2. Copy the files in the Configuration Management\Config-Archives folder. 3. Paste the files into the Configuration Management\Config-Archives folder on the new server. Installing Cirrus Configuration Management Complete the following procedure to install Cirrus Configuration Management. For your information about upgrading Cirrus Configuration Management, see the Administrator Guide. To install Cirrus Configuration Management: 1. Log on to the computer on which you want to install Cirrus Configuration Management with an administrator account. Note: To ensure that Cirrus Configuration Management runs properly, do not install Cirrus Configuration Management on a domain controller. 2. If you downloaded the product from the SolarWinds website, navigate to your download location and launch the executable. 3. If you received physical media, browse to the executable file and launch it. 4. Review the Welcome text, and then click Next. 5. Agree to the license agreement on the End User License Agreement window, and then click Next. 6. Type the user name and organization in the fields provided. 7. Decide if you want to limit Cirrus Configuration Management to the currently logged in account, and then click Next. 8. Click Next. If you want to change the installation folder, click Change. 9. Click Install. 10. Click Finish on the InstallShield Wizard Completed window. 11. Provide the appropriate information on the Install Software License Key window, and then click Continue. You need a customer ID and password to successfully install the key. For more information, see Software License Key on page 7.

Migrating Cirrus 7 Software License Key If you are prompted for your name, e-mail address, phone number, customer ID, and password, complete the following procedure. To license your product: 1. If the computer on which you are installing Cirrus Configuration Management is connected to the Internet and not behind a proxy server, complete the following procedure: a. Enter the required information on the Install Software License Key window. b. Click Continue. The SolarWinds license registration server will issue a license key that will allow Cirrus Configuration Management to operate. 2. If the computer on which you are installing Cirrus Configuration Management is not connected to the Internet, your system can not be authenticated by the SolarWinds license registration server. Complete the following procedure: a. Click Skip This and Enter Software License Key Now on the Install Software License Key window. b. Obtain a license using a computer that is connected to the Internet. Log in to the customer area of the SolarWinds website at www.solarwinds.com/support, and then click Software Keys in the left navigation of the customer portal. Choose the product for which you need a key and follow the instructions on the page to obtain a key. The key can then be entered in the Enter Software License Key text box on the Install Software License Key window. c. Click Continue to complete your software license key installation.
