HISTORY OF THE ANOKA COUNTY ATTORNEY S OFFICE The position of County Attorney was established in 1857 when Anoka officially became a county of Minnesota. It is an elected position that initially had a two-year term, and has a four-year term today. The office was held by several different men early in the county s history, and regularly changed between a few of the county s experienced lawyers. In recent times, the number of men serving as County Attorney has decreased, with just three people serving between 1950 and 2015. The mission of the County Attorney s Office is to protect the public and contribute to a well-governed community by prosecuting criminals, protecting vulnerable children and adults, supporting victims and providing legal counsel for county business. (Information taken from: the Anoka County Board Meeting Minutes, 1857-1871; the Anoka County Union newspaper; and from the Anoka County Attorney s Office website: https://www.anokacounty.us/740/county-attorneys-office.
