Bennett, Attorney General Phone: (808) Fax: (808) For Immediate Release: July 20, 2006 News Release No SEX OFFENDERS INDICTED FOR FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS (HONOLULU) An Oahu grand jury has indicted ten men for failure to comply with sex offender registration requirements. Bail for each offender was set at $25,000. Intentional or knowing failure to comply with sex offender registration requirements is a class C felony, punishable by up to five years in prison. The prosecutions were made possible by investigations conducted jointly by the Honolulu Police Department and investigators from the Department of the Attorney General. Information regarding and photographs of the indicted offenders are attached. The whereabouts of nine of the ten offenders are unknown. Glenn T. Meyers is currently incarcerated at Oahu Community Correctional Center for allegedly attempting to murder his pregnant girlfriend. Members of the public with information regarding the whereabouts of the remaining offenders are asked to contact the Department of the Attorney General at (808) Convicted sex offenders will be prosecuted and we will ask that they be sent to jail. Attorney General Mark Bennett said. Knowing the whereabouts of convicted sex offenders helps people make informed decisions about safety in their own neighborhoods, and helps parents protect their children. That is why, in December of 2005, after we indicted convicted sex offenders for registration violations, we offered amnesty to sex offenders who had failed to register. We want sex offender indictments 23

2 Page 2 the public to have accurate information. A few sex offenders took up the amnesty offer. As promised, we are now going after those offenders who ignore our registration laws. The Department of the Attorney General maintains the state sex offender registry and operates the web site at sexoffenders.hawaii.gov. The department has a Non-Compliant Offenders section to the web site. This section lists 624 offenders who have failed to complete or update registration requirements or otherwise failed to comply with the sex offender law. The Attorney General asks members of the public to call (808) if they know the whereabouts of any of these 624 non-compliant offenders. The registry does not have verified addresses for 247 of the 624. There are approximately 2,309 sex registered sex offenders in Hawaii. Approximately 1,505 offenders are listed on the sex offender registry public web site. Approximately 1,839 offenders, including those listed on the web site, are listed at the public information terminals located at designated police stations in every county and at the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center at 465 South King Street. Expanded Internet information became available on Hawaii s sex offender information web site on May 9, 2005, when Governor Linda Lingle signed a law to increase public access to sex offender registration information (Act 45). Since then, the web site has received more than 6.2 million hits. An indictment is merely an accusation and the defendants are presumed innocent until and unless they are proven guilty. 3 Page 3 The sex offenders listed below were indicted on July 18, 19 or 20, 2006 for failure to comply with sex offender registration requirements. Glenn T. Meyers DOB: 10/1/62 Age: 44 Meyers was convicted on February 26, 1992 of Sexual Assault in the Second Degree, sexually assaulting a minor under 14 years of age, and Burglary in the First Degree. On May 29, 2006, Defendant was arrested for Attempted Murder in the Second Degree. Defendant allegedly ran over his pregnant girlfriend s stomach. Meyers has failed to update his sexual offender registration information since January 29, Meyers is currently incarcerated at the Oahu Community Correctional Center, pending trial for Attempted Murder in the Second Degree. Reginald A. Johnson DOH: 11/2/56 Age: 49 Johnson was convicted in 1993 of three counts of Sexual Assault in the Second Degree and one count of Terroristic Threatening in the Second Degree. One of the Sexual Assault convictions involved Defendant sexually assaulting a minor under 14 years of age.

4 Page 4 Johnson has failed to update his sexual offender registration information since August 11, Johnson may be living in Mililani. Jeff P. Quiambo DOB: Age: 39 Quiambo was convicted in 1990 of two counts of Sexual Assault in the Second Degree and two counts of Sexual Assault in the Third Degree for the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl. After his release from prison for the above convictions, Quiambo was convicted for Abuse of a Family or Household Member in Quiambo registered a false address on Quiambo has failed to update his sexual offender registration information since Quiambo s whereabouts are unknown at this time.

5 Page 5 Henry Helton DOB: 1/18/51 Age: 55 Helton was convicted on January 22, 1996 of seven counts of Attempted Sexual Assault in the Second Degree and of three counts of Sexual Assault in the Third Degree, involving the sexual assault of a minor under 14 years of age. Helton has failed to update his sexual offender registration information since February 28, Helton s whereabouts are unknown at this time. Roderick P. Mariano DOB: Age: 32 Mariano was convicted on October 22, 1995 of three counts of Sexual Assault in the Second Degree and two counts of Sexual Assault in the Forth Degree. Mariano has failed to update his sexual offender registration information since August 7, Mariano s whereabouts are unknown at this time.

6 Page 6 Robert W. Malabey, Jr. DOB: Age: 33 Malabey was convicted on January 29, 1996 of two counts of Sexual Assault in the Second Degree and two counts of Sexual Assault in the Fourth Degree. Malabey was also convicted on June 17, 1994 of Theft in the Second Degree, on July 23, 1993 of Escape in the Second Degree, and on February 3, 1993 of Unauthorized Control of a Propelled Vehicle. Malabey has failed to update his sexual offender registration information since July 21, Malabey s whereabouts are unknown at this time. Melvin L. AhNee DOB: Age: 42 AhNee was convicted on December 22, 1988 of Attempted Sexual Assault in the Second Degree and Kidnapping, and on December 5, 1983 of Burglary in the First Degree. AhNee has failed to update his sexual offender registration information since October 23, AhNee s whereabouts are unknown at this time.

7 Page 7 Paul Anthony Ornellas DOB: Age: 36 Ornellas was convicted on September 18, 1992 of Attempted Sexual Assault in the Second Degree and Burglary in the First Degree. Ornellas last updated his sexual offender registration information on February 2, He moved from this address and failed to notify the Attorney General. Ornellas whereabouts are unknown at this time. Anthony Garner DOB: Age: 34 Garner was convicted on May 12, 1998 of two counts of Sexual Assault in the Second Degree and three counts of Sexual Assault in the Third Degree. Garner has failed to update his sexual offender registration since October Garner s whereabouts are unknown at this time.

8 Page 8 Darrel Gene Lawson DOB: Age: 44 Lawson was convicted in 1992 of two counts of Sexual Assault in the Second Degree and two counts of Sexual Assault in the Third Degree. Lawson has failed to update his sexual offender registration information since December 30, Lawson s whereabouts are unknown at this time.
