NQF Ref 0862 Version 3 Page 1 of 7 National Certificate in Fire Detection and Alarm Systems (Testing) (Level 3) Level 3 Credits 107 Purpose This qualification is for people in the fire protection industry, whose work involves inspection and testing of fire detection and alarm systems. All standards listed are required. The qualification covers skills and knowledge in the following areas: fire protection principles and industry knowledge; electrical principles and safety; fire detection and alarm systems and installation practices; checking and testing of fire detection and alarm systems; first aid, resuscitation and safe working practices; trade mathematics; customer service; communications and report writing. The qualification can typically be achieved in the course of a two-year traineeship or apprentice programme. It leads to the National Certificate in Fire Protection Systems Technology (Inspection and Testing) (Level 4) [Ref: 0864] and the National Certificate in Fire Detection and Alarm Systems (Level 4) [Ref: 0569]. People who have completed this qualification and wish to progress to installation work will already have significant credits towards the National Certificate in Fire Detection and Alarm Systems (Level 4) [Ref: 0569]. Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the purpose of award. NQF Ref 0862 Version 3 Page 4 of 7 Version 3 was republished in order to include reverse transition arrangements (see section below) to ensure candidates would not be disadvantaged when expiring standards were no longer available. Version 3 was issued following a review by the Qualifications Advisory Group in December 2006 within the guidelines provided by the Sector Advisory Group. Changes to structure and content: titles, levels, and credits of reviewed standards have been updated; credit total has changed from 114 to 107 credits; the Elective section has been removed so that all standards are now compulsory; standards 17717 and 17725 have been replaced by 23262; standards 17718 and 17719 have been replaced by 23258; standards 17721 and 17722 have been replaced by 23259; standards 56, 58, 1178, 1279, 1979, 3488, 3490, 3491, 3501, 7123, 8489, 8490, 10790, 10791, 10933-10940, 12349, 15848, 15849, 15854, and 15871 have been removed from the qualification; standards 497, 2780, and 15851 have been introduced to the qualification. People currently working towards version 2 of this qualification may either complete the requirements of that version, or transfer their results to version 3 of the qualification For detailed information see Review Summaries on the NZQA website. This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards see table below.
