It s a simple colour coding system, recognised throughout industry, to help identify which absorbent should be used to clean up different types of spills. M O C As a general rule of thumb if the spill has happened indoors, use a grey product to absorb both oil and water-based substances (technically referred to as hydrophilic). In most cases, Oil-only is best used outdoors to absorb just oil-based spills (technically referred to as hydrophobic). These products are white in colour. Chemical or toxic spills require tough inert absorbents. These are yellow in colour. Chemical spills can be extremely hazardous and should not be cleaned up without the correct training and protective equipment. Oil Storage Regulations Regulations concerning the storage of oil have been introduced which effect from small containers bulk fuels, drums and IBC s throughout England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. There aren t any equivalent oil storage regulations in Wales however you should follow the good practice advice given within Pollution Prevention Guidelines (PPG) to reduce the risk of causing pollution. The general rule being all oil stored outside more than 200 litres should be placed on a bund or inside suitable secondary containment. The capacity should be at least 0% of the largest container or 25% of the sum of all the containers total capacity, whichever is the greater. These regulations are slightly different depending on each country but help and advice is available by phone or by arranging a free no obligation site visit to give you peace of mind. Environmental Management Systems (ISO400) There are a number of areas we can provide value added assistance here, take a look at the following to see if we tick any of your boxes;. We provide certified training courses in advanced spillage response to give you an acceptable level of competence. 2. We can provide a detailed free survey of your site or sites to determine the level and type of spillage response you will require. We will also check that what you have in place is the right type, size and location. Identify and address any non-compliance issues. 3. Available in the market today are alternative absorbents made from raw materials that are sustainable that not only give you increased performance and competitive edge but it would also be a continuous improvement to switch over and use them. 4. We can advise you on the introduction of a spill Control Management system to ensure kits are topped up and checked by you or us on a regular basis. 5. Bulk delivery procedures and the natural removal of unsightly oil stains using Bio-remediation. 6. Exposed spill pallet or open bund contaminated water is an expensive process to remove it, consider talking to us about Filtasock which separates oil contamination from bund or interceptors and discharges onto open land or foul drains at 2.3 parts per million. This is another continuous improvement and a substantial cost saving. Sustainable absorbent options These absorbents are either made from renewable sources or from recycled fibres. ORGANIC SPILL CONTROL ECOZYME 2 A very effective enzyme for removing stains from concrete surfaces and block paving that is not suitable for tarmac surfaces. This is very effective on very old stains on factory floors or bulk delivery areas.
