16 Safe Chemical Spill Response Operator safety is the key priority when responding to chemical spills. Neutralisation is a process by which hazardous materials (hazmats) are transformed into non-hazardous residues, thus rendered harmless. VYTAC Neutralisation are now recognized as an important element for spill response safety. Safe - their unique colour change indicators allow safe neutralisation. Reduced disposal costs - disposal costs can be dramatically reduced by converting hazardous waste to general waste Chemical Neutralisation Procedures FOR SMALL CHEMICAL SPILLS 1. Identify appropriate Neutralisation 2. Sprinkle neutraliser on chemical until desired colour change indicates complete Neutralisation 3. The non hazardous compound can now be swept up and disposed through the general waste system Acid Vytac ACX Alkali Vytac CS FOR CHEMICAL SPILLS UP TO 20 LITRES 1. Vacuum the spilled chemicals using a tailor made Chemical Wet Vacuum Cleaner 2. Dispense the aggressive chemical into a container for treatment 3. Dilute the chemical with to the required dilution to prevent heat build up 4. Add the appropriate Vytac neutraliser until the colour change indicator shows neutralisation is complete 5. Dispose of the neutralised non hazardous chemical down via general waste system. ACID NEUTRALISATION On adding Vytac ACX to an acid, the pale pink/orange colour will gradually change. Continue to add and mix Vytac ACX until the colour is permanently red indicating a neutral solution. SODIUM HYDROXIDE NEUTRALISATION On adding Vytac CS to an alkali, the purple colour will gradually change. Continue to add and mix Vytac CS until the colour is permanently dark yellow. FOR CHEMICAL SPILLS GREATER THAN 20 LITRES Call Spill Response Team Spill Training for chemical spills accredited by British Industry Federation is available for operatives handling chemicals. 16
