Cellular Backup The Challenge In 2002, the FCC decided to no longer require wireless carriers to support analog AMPS service in the US as of February 18, 2008. The CRTC & Industry Canada do not have any specific guideline or rules for maintaining AMPS service in Canada, leaving the matter in the hands of the Industry.
Cellular Backup The Challenge Bell Mobility and Telus Mobility have announced that they will observe the same shutdown guidelines as in the United States, and will not begin decommissioning their AMPS networks until after February 2008. Rogers Wireless is currently in the process of decommissioning their AMPS network, will full shutdown expected to occur in May 2007.
Cellular Backup The Challenge There are thousands of cellular backup transmitters used in burglar alarm systems which still operate on the analog networks and will cease to work after 2008
Digital Wireless Technologies All AMPS carriers have converted most of their customers to a digital standard such as CDMA or GSM and continue to do so at a rapid pace. Digital technologies such as GSM support multiple voice calls on the same channel and offer enhanced features such as two-way text messaging (SMS) and data services.
What is GSM? The Global System for Mobile Communications, GSM is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world. GSM service is used by over 2 billion people in more than 212 countries. Current coverage reaches over 93% of the Canadian population. The main competing network is Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA).
What is GPRS? The name, General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a direct link to the Internet from a GSM phone phone or device. GPRS is to mobile networks what ADSL is to fixed telephone networks the favored solution for providing fast, always-on inexpensive Internet connections.
