letter from the Director of isde mr. Juan José Sánchez Puig The ver y etymology of the word Master embodies the philosophy underpinning ISDE s educational objective, where the student is the focal point and the absolute protagonist. All of our resources and effor ts are focused on achieving this objective, which is to ensure that the student has mastered the subject matter by the end of the programme. Par tnerships with the leading figures in the world of law and business, a proven training method, the personal attention of the teaching and coordination team, and all of our technical and human resources are placed at the disposal of our students in our quest to ensure that the programmes achieve their utmost educational goals and make the time and effor t devoted to them wor th the while. Throughout the years, we have striven and succeeded in ensuring that our students not only acquire the most upto-date knowledge, but that they also accomplish their personal and professional development goals through the acquisition of skills and competencies that lay the foundation for a new stage in their careers. The sum of the effor ts of the ISDE and its students without whose commitment the most qualified staff or technical resources would serve no purpose- has made us proud to see how those who trusted us with their training needs have gone on to enjoy highly successful careers and to occupy the senior positions they so brilliantly and so efficiently prepared themselves for. Loyalty to the spirit and methods that have earned us the trust of thousands of students, and continuous upgrading and improvement of our training methods, have placed us at the forefront of our field, as evidenced by our performance in independent rankings. The accomplishment of these objectives in recent years has driven us to never lose sight of the fact that our goal is the success of our students. Mr. Juan José Sánchez Puig Executive Director

Presentation In order to cope with international demands of the international legal market, in 2013 ISDE shall launch a new program of advanced International Legal Practice devoted to the most relevant aspects of international law and global business framework. For any legal advisor who addresses their practice to international clients or advises local clients with international potential, this program of advanced International Legal Practice is essential for a successful future career. It will provide the student with legal international knowledge, access to the current practice and international contacts. The ISDE programme is the new response to these challenges. We invite interested students to register for the ISDE programme and to spend a pleasant, interesting and challenging year in Barcelona with lawyers, legal advisors and colleagues from different jurisdictions worldwide. This vital experience will allow them to overcome national prejudices and explore, with others, the development and use of international law in current business practices.

General description 7 Objectives In todays era of globalization and interdependence a thorough knowledge of international private law is becoming more and more essential for international practitioners. With this view, ISDE s new International Legal Practice program has been designed to provide a flexible framework for advanced study in different areas of international law. Interdisciplinary legal knowledge and globalization are two key concepts in any law program at the beginning of this century. Although law students may have in-depth experience of the specific features of their home country legislation, that is not sufficient for counselling companies and entrepreneurs who are active in international trade and become operative in worldwide markets. Additionally, a familiarity with the tax, commercial and present day clients' commercial needs. As in other ISDE programmes, the course shall seek to endow the ISDE s practical approach to day-to-day legal problems that practitioners may face in their professional careers as a way to provide individuals with high-level training in the field. Attendees For the reasons noted above, the course is aimed especially at legal professionals who are already familiar with international private law such as lawyers, in-house counsel, civil servants and lecturers, among others, and whose professional interest or intellectual curiosity leads them to seek further professional training in this area. The program is addressed at practitioners with a general legal education including basic training in international law and has as its objective to enhance the trainees' knowledge of key areas of current international practice. Additionally, some knowledge of national tax, commercial domestic law and economic rules would be of useful to take full advantage of the course and its practical approach in the international arena. However, applications by participants trained in subjects other than law, such as international relations, political studies or economics, may also be considered, provided that they have become familiar with the general principles of international law through their professional experience.

Methodology and structure Over the years, ISDE has developed a methodology in other Masters consisting in a double approach: (i) a practical study of the relevant legal subjects, combined with (ii) the possibility to practice and establish direct training in a law-firm, a legal department of a company or an institutional office. As such, the course will be in two phases: the first quarter (February to June) there are intensive class sessions and the second quarter (July to December) students practise and expand their legal knowledge in a law-firm or legal department of a company. During the second phase, students will have the opportunity to work closely and collaborate with lawyers and legal advisers in their day-to-day legal activities and cases. The aim is to offer training sessions and stages that deal with international law and allow students to work in an international legal environment. With regard the course structure, the new programme of advanced International Legal Practice is mainly devoted to international law and business practice. Therefore, subjects are divided into core and specific seminars, in order to cover both the essential subjects required for International Business Lawyers but also other specific subjects, which may be of interest to certain practitioners. The core subjects, which are addressed at providing a solid knowledge in international legal practice include, among others: international private law, practice of international transactions, alternative dispute resolutions, international litigation, competition law, International IP law and Contract and commercial law. As with specific seminars, other subjects are also contemplated such as international criminal law, human rights, sports law, and so on). In all events, the core of the course is devoted to the most relevant aspects of international business law and global trade and commerce issues, which require a higher number of hours/ credits. In parallel to these training sessions, students will have the opportunity to temporarily join international law-firms or legal departments of multinational companies to experience and in person the international flavour of real cases and actual assignments. ISDE s philosophy is not only to learn from case-law and practical sessions but also allow students to experience the functioning of an international law-firm and learn from real situations and client assignments.

The Master is oriented to those subjects that are not usually sufficiently developed in domestic law schools but which are nowadays critical for an international legal practice. Offers not only practical legal skills but is also focused to develop thorough consideration about and knowledge on international business trends, so that students may advise globally or at least detect the crucial issues involved in a particular transaction and thereby provide a synthetic and practical approach to international clients and large multinationals.
